Who is each format for?

Hosts serving a small children’s group

A cone multipack gives you a stated number of individual servings without bowls or scooping. Compare the guest count with the count on the box: Tesco Groceries lists six-cone Cornetto packs, while Sainsbury’s lists four-cone packs.

Hosts with uncertain numbers or mixed appetites

A scoopable tub lets you vary portions, provided someone can serve it and you have bowls and spoons. Tesco Groceries and Sainsbury’s list soft-scoop tubs in 1.8L and 2L sizes.

Hosts managing dietary or allergy needs

Choose each product by its current pack information rather than by brand or flavour alone. Tesco Groceries warns that ingredients, nutrition and allergen information can change when food is reformulated.

What should you check before buying?

Decide how you will serve the ice cream, then check the pack count or tub capacity against the guests you expect.

Multipack cones

Choose when: You want to hand each guest a ready-portioned ice cream without bowls.

Trade-off: A fixed pack count gives you less room to adjust if attendance or appetites change.

Scoopable tub

Choose when: You want to vary portions and can have someone serve from the tub.

Trade-off: Serving takes bowls, spoons and time at the table.

Individual mini tubs

Choose when: You want separate, spoonable portions rather than cones or a shared tub.

Trade-off: Portions remain fixed; check both the number of tubs and whether spoons are included.

Priority What to check Your needs
Serving quantity Check the number and stated size of individual portions, or a tub’s total capacity. Tesco Groceries lists Cornetto Classico at 6 x 90ml; Sainsbury’s lists own-brand cones at 4 x 110ml and a soft-scoop tub at 2L. I need enough for the people expected, with some flexibility if the guest count changes.
Serving method Decide whether guests will receive individual items or someone will scoop from a tub. For cups or tubs, check which spoons, bowls and serving utensils you need. Handing out portions would be simpler, or I can make time and space for serving scoops.
Dietary needs Read the exact current pack’s ingredients, allergen information and any relevant dietary claim. Do not apply one variant’s claim to another product from the same brand. I need to check each ice cream against the requirements of the guests who will eat it.

Party-planning mistakes to avoid

  • Counting boxes instead of servings

A six-cone box and a four-cone box cover different numbers of guests, even though both are multipacks.

Count the people you intend to serve, then check the portion count on every pack before deciding how many boxes you need.

  • Overlooking how a tub will be served

A tub allows adjustable scoops, but guests cannot simply take an individual portion from the box.

Plan who will serve it and have the necessary bowls, spoons and serving utensils ready.

Serving from a shared tub also takes time during the party.

  • Assuming a brand has one dietary status

Tesco Groceries lists a specifically named Cornetto non-dairy, vegan and gluten-free cone, but that wording does not describe every Cornetto product. Its product-information notice also warns that formulations can change.

Check the current pack of each flavour and variant you intend to serve, including its ingredients and highlighted allergens.

Brands and retailer ranges to consider

These examples illustrate serving formats; a brand or retailer name alone does not establish the ingredients or suitability of a particular pack.

Cornetto

Tesco Groceries lists Cornetto Classico cones at 6 x 90ml and a separately named non-dairy, vegan and gluten-free vanilla cone at 4 x 90ml.

  • Individual cones give you a defined number of hand-out portions.
  • Pack counts and dietary claims differ between the named variants.

Tesco

Tesco Groceries lists cone multipacks alongside its Soft Scoop Vanilla Ice Cream 2L tub.

  • The listed formats let you compare fixed-count cones with a scoopable tub.
  • Check the exact tub or cone pack for current ingredients and allergens.

Sainsbury’s

Sainsbury’s lists own-brand cones at 4 x 110ml and a vanilla-flavour soft-scoop tub at 2L.

  • Its listed formats offer a choice between individual cones and portions scooped to serve.
  • A category listing does not establish whether an individual product meets a guest’s dietary needs.

Asda

In May 2025, Asda Corporate announced a sharing box containing four individual 110ml mini tubs.

  • The announced format combines individual portions with a spoonable dessert.
  • That launch announcement does not establish which flavours or packs are available now.

Common questions

Should I buy cones or a tub for a birthday party?

Buy cones if you want to hand out one ready-portioned item per guest and the pack count covers everyone you intend to serve. Choose a scoopable tub if you need adjustable portions or attendance is uncertain, provided you can supply bowls, spoons and someone to serve it.

Can I use an older product listing to check allergens?

Check the current pack before serving rather than relying on an older listing or a similar flavour. Tesco Groceries warns that reformulation can change ingredients, nutrition and allergen information.
