Who is choosing?

Home revisers choosing a biscuit break

A bourbon cream, plain digestive and chocolate digestive offer different combinations of biscuit, filling and topping. Choose the style you want, then consider how many biscuits you intend to have during a break.

Households checking allergens

The biscuit style alone cannot settle whether a product meets someone’s dietary requirements. Check the exact pack’s ingredients and precautionary allergen statements, including any information about wheat, milk or soya.

Adults buying for school-provided revision sessions

Food provided by a school is a different setting from a snack bought for revision at home. For state-funded schools in England, the Department for Education says the applicable school-food standards govern food provided to pupils on school premises; check the particular setting before choosing what to supply.

What should you check?

Start with the biscuit style, then compare the particular packs you might buy: a familiar name does not tell you the portion, ingredients or storage instructions.

PriorityWhat to checkYour needs
Biscuit style Check whether the pack describes a cocoa sandwich biscuit with cream, a plain wheat digestive, or a chocolate-topped digestive. The topping on a digestive is not a bourbon filling. I want a cream-filled cocoa biscuit, a plain digestive, or chocolate on a digestive without a sandwich filling.
Sugars and portions Read sugars per biscuit for the portion you expect to eat. Compare per 100g as well when biscuit sizes differ: McVitie’s lists 2.2g sugars per Original Digestive biscuit and 4.8g per Milk Chocolate Digestive biscuit. For repeated revision breaks, I want to judge the biscuits I am likely to eat, not the pack as a single serving.
Ingredients and allergens Read the exact pack’s ingredients, emphasised allergens and separate ‘may contain’ statements. ASDA lists wheat in its ordinary Bourbon Biscuits, while its distinct Free From Bourbon is labelled free from gluten and milk. If gluten, milk or another allergen matters in my household, I need the label for the particular variant rather than an assumption about all bourbons or digestives.
Pack and storage Check pack size and after-opening instructions. Waitrose advises airtight storage for its Essential Bourbon Creams and recommends consuming them within seven days of opening for best quality. I would rather choose an amount that suits the number of breaks or people sharing it, then store the opened pack as directed.

Common buying mistakes

  • Reading ‘digestive’ as a nutrition or revision claim

A plain digestive still contains sugars, and adding a chocolate topping changes the recipe. McVitie’s lists 2.2g sugars per Original Digestive biscuit and 4.8g per Milk Chocolate Digestive biscuit; those figures describe the named products, not every digestive.

Compare the varieties on the pack using the same per-biscuit or per-100g basis, and choose a portion rather than expecting a study benefit from the name.

  • Assuming ‘suitable for vegans’ answers an allergy question

ASDA describes its ordinary Bourbon Biscuits as suitable for vegans, but lists wheat and possible cross-contact with milk and other allergens. Its separately labelled Free From Bourbon is a different product.

Check the physical pack’s ingredients and ‘may contain’ statements against the individual’s requirements, including when choosing an expressly labelled free-from variant.

  • Treating school-food and HFSS rules as the same test

The Department for Education’s school-food standards apply to food provided to pupils in state-funded schools in England. They are separate from rules about less healthy food advertising and certain retail promotions, which have different scopes; a biscuit’s style name alone does not establish its regulatory classification.

If biscuits are to be provided at school, check the applicable nation’s rules and the school’s provision arrangements. Do not apply a school-food conclusion to an ordinary purchase for revision at home.

Relevant brand ranges

These named ranges illustrate different biscuit styles and label checks; a detail for one product should not be assumed for every biscuit from its brand.

McVitie’s

Its Original and Milk Chocolate Digestives are distinct from its Tasties Bourbon Creams, which ASDA describes as a cream-filled cocoa sandwich biscuit.

  • McVitie’s lists per-biscuit nutrition for Original and Milk Chocolate Digestives, making those two named varieties straightforward to compare by biscuit.
  • Original and Milk Chocolate Digestives have different ingredients and sugars per biscuit; neither label describes the entire range.

ASDA

Its ordinary Bourbon Biscuits and separately labelled Free From Bourbon Biscuits serve different dietary-screening needs.

  • The Free From listing describes its variant as free from gluten and milk.
  • The ordinary bourbon contains wheat. Check the Free From pack itself for its size and full allergen information.

Waitrose

The Essential range includes both cream-filled Bourbon Creams and plain Digestive Biscuits.

  • Waitrose supplies per-biscuit figures and after-opening storage instructions for these named products.
  • Their recipes and figures differ; the Essential Digestive is not a cream-filled bourbon.

M&S

Its Extra Cream Bourbon Creams are a distinct, cream-forward bourbon variety.

  • M&S lists 36.7g sugars per 100g for the 165g product.
  • For a per-biscuit comparison with another pack, check the serving information or biscuit weight rather than treating the per-100g figure as a per-biscuit amount.

Tesco

Its own-label Digestive Biscuits provide another named plain-digestive option to compare with bourbon creams.

  • Tesco lists ingredients, including wheat flour and dried skimmed milk, and per-biscuit nutrition for its 400g Digestive Biscuits.
  • Check that product’s label rather than extending its ingredients or nutrition figures to other Tesco biscuits.

Digestives on Joybuy

These options cover plain and chocolate digestives for a revision break. Choose by the type of topping and pack format you want; a digestive is not the cream-filled bourbon style discussed above.

Questions before buying

Does a digestive biscuit help with digestion or revision?

Its name is not evidence of a digestive or concentration benefit. Choose between a digestive and a bourbon cream by their ingredients, biscuit style and the portion you want, rather than using either in place of a meal.

Do bourbon creams need preparation or refrigeration?

The listed bourbon creams are ready-to-eat biscuits; follow the exact pack’s storage directions. ASDA advises an airtight container after opening its Bourbon Biscuits, while Waitrose gives an airtight-storage instruction for Essential Bourbon Creams.

Can someone avoiding gluten choose a plain digestive?

Do not assume a plain digestive is gluten-free: McVitie’s Original contains wheat. Look for a product expressly labelled for the relevant requirement, such as the distinct ASDA Free From Bourbon variant, and check its physical pack and precautionary allergen information.

Can a school provide bourbon biscuits during a revision session?

That requires a decision for the particular school and setting, not a blanket answer for every UK school. The Department for Education says food provided to pupils in state-funded schools in England must meet the applicable school-food standards; proposed revised English standards remained subject to parliamentary approval in October 2026. A biscuit bought for revision at home is a different situation.
