Who are you buying for?

The choice changes when you know whether the biscuits are for one person’s tea break or a plate shared with guests.

Couples sharing a tea-time treat

A cream-filled bourbon and a plain digestive offer different flavours and textures. Start with the recipient’s preference, then choose a pack size that suits a small sharing plate.

Hosts serving guests with dietary requirements

Check the physical pack before serving biscuits to someone with an allergy, intolerance or dietary preference. Wheat, milk and precautionary allergen statements can differ between products, even within the same biscuit style.

What should you check?

Decide on the biscuit style first, then check the label and the amount you need for the people sharing it.

Priority What to check Your needs
Biscuit style Check whether the pack contains chocolate-flavoured cream sandwiches, plain wheatmeal digestives or chocolate-topped digestives. These are different formats. I’m putting together a tea plate for someone who prefers either a cream-filled biscuit or a plainer digestive.
Allergens and dietary labels Read the current ingredients, highlighted allergens, “may contain” statements and any vegan label. A vegan label does not establish allergy suitability. Before I offer biscuits to guests, I need to check the exact pack against their dietary requirements.
Sugars and portions Compare sugars per 100 g on the exact products, then look at per-biscuit figures where supplied. A reduced-sugar digestive has a different formulation from an original version. I’d like to choose the biscuit and serving amount from the label, rather than assuming every digestive contains less sugar than every bourbon cream.
Fibre and formulation Compare fibre per 100 g and read the ingredient list if wholemeal, organic or reduced-sugar formulations matter to you. Check each claim separately. Fibre or a particular formulation may matter more to me than whether the biscuit is cream-filled.
Sharing quantity Check pack weight, any stated biscuit count and storage instructions for an opened pack. For a small Valentine’s Day tea, I want enough to share without choosing a pack solely by its appearance.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Treating “digestive” as an allergy or nutrition claim

The name does not mean gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan or lower in sugar. The digestive examples listed by Waitrose & Partners contain wheat, and its Essential Digestives listing says the product may contain milk.

Read the ingredients, allergen statement and dietary labels on the exact pack before serving it to someone else.

  • Assuming a reduced-sugar digestive is otherwise identical

Waitrose & Partners lists 8.9 g sugars and 7.9 g fibre per 100 g for McVitie’s The Light One, compared with 15.1 g sugars and 3.7 g fibre per 100 g for McVitie’s Original Digestives. The formulations differ, and The Light One may contain milk.

If sugars are your priority, compare the figures on the packs; check ingredients and allergens separately.

  • Relying on an online listing for the final allergy check

Recipes and allergen information can change, and the pack received may differ from an earlier listing.

Check the physical pack, particularly if your order has been substituted or the biscuits were bought well before they will be served.

Relevant biscuit ranges

These ranges illustrate different formulations; a brand name alone does not establish the ingredients or dietary suitability of a particular pack.

McVitie’s

The Original Digestives, The Light One and bourbon creams represent different choices within the McVitie’s range.

  • Waitrose & Partners lists Original Digestives as suitable for vegans and gives 15.1 g sugars per 100 g.
  • The Light One has a different formulation and may contain milk; check the label of the particular pack you buy.

Waitrose Essential

The range includes a 400 g plain digestive and a 400 g chocolate-flavoured bourbon cream biscuit.

  • The two styles offer a straightforward cream-filled or plain wheatmeal choice for a sharing plate.
  • The digestive listing says it may contain milk; check each pack’s wheat and other allergen statements separately.

Doves Farm

Wholemeal Digestives provide an organic, vegan-labelled digestive option.

  • Waitrose & Partners lists 6.8 g fibre per 100 g for this 200 g product.
  • The product contains wheat and barley malt extract; its organic and vegan descriptions do not mean gluten-free.

Questions about choosing and serving

Should I serve bourbon creams or digestives for a Valentine’s Day tea?

Serve bourbon creams if the recipient prefers a chocolate-flavoured cream sandwich; choose plain digestives if they prefer a simpler wheatmeal biscuit. Check the pack’s dietary information before sharing either style with guests.

Are digestives always lower in sugar than bourbon creams?

No: the sugar figure depends on the product, not just its biscuit style. Waitrose & Partners lists 27.8 g sugars per 100 g for Essential Bourbon Creams, 22.3 g for Essential Digestives, 15.1 g for McVitie’s Original Digestives and 8.9 g for McVitie’s The Light One. Compare the exact packs and the amount you intend to serve.

Is a vegan-labelled biscuit suitable for someone with a wheat or milk allergy?

Not necessarily. A vegan label does not replace the allergen statement: the bourbon and digestive examples listed by Waitrose & Partners include wheat, while some packs carry possible milk or sesame warnings. Check the physical pack against the guest’s requirements before serving.

How should I keep opened biscuits before serving them?

Reseal them or transfer them to an airtight container and follow the pack’s storage instructions. The Waitrose & Partners listing for Essential Bourbon Creams recommends consuming them within seven days of opening; check the wording on the pack you buy.
