What matters when choosing a light?
Start with control over the added light and its appearance on paper, then decide whether portable power or a more directed beam matters for your filming space.
| Concern | What to check | Who this matters to |
| Changing window light |
Look for adjustable colour temperature and controls you can reach between takes. A bi-colour fixture does not make the daylight constant. |
If the window makes successive takes look warmer or cooler, I want to adjust the fill rather than depend entirely on camera correction. Around 36% of consumers put this control first. |
| Ink colour and even paper lighting |
Compare stated CRI and TLCI values, then check modifier compatibility and the beam across your writing area. |
For close shots of ink and brush strokes, I need plausible-looking colour without an obvious hotspot or hard hand shadow. This is the main concern for around 29% of consumers. |
| Portable power and recording noise |
Check runtime at the output you need, power-supply requirements and fan noise near your microphone. |
When I change teaching locations, I need a manageable power setup that lasts through filming without distracting from the spoken lesson. Around 21% of consumers make that their primary need. |
| Light spill |
Check beam adjustment and compatible modifiers; a narrower beam is not automatically softer on paper. |
If my desk sits close to a background, I want the added light aimed at the work rather than spread across the room. That control comes first for around 14% of consumers. |

Questions about filming and setup
Is a bi-colour light useful beside a window?
Yes, if you need to adjust the added light as daylight or nearby room lighting changes in apparent warmth. The amaran COB 60x S, SmallRig RC 60B, ZHIYUN MOLUS X100 and Aputure LS 60x each list 2700K–6500K adjustment, but changing the fixture setting cannot stabilise the daylight itself.
Will I need a softbox for brush lettering?
Try diffusion if your paper shows a concentrated bright area or your hand casts a distracting hard shadow. Check compatibility with the exact light: Aputure advises using flood mode when its LS 60x is paired with the LS 60 Softbox to reduce hotspots in the diffusion.
Can a battery light run for the whole lesson?
That depends on the model, output setting and length of filming. SmallRig states a maximum of 45 minutes at full power or 75 minutes in ECO mode for the RC 60B; for a longer session, check the appropriate external power arrangement and what the bundle includes.
What should I check when buying a mains-powered light for Great Britain?
Check the supplied plug and power accessories, product information and the seller’s intended market before purchase. GOV.UK’s guidance on the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 addresses equipment placed on the Great Britain market and points readers to separate Northern Ireland guidance, so do not assume the same requirements apply in both places.
