Who is choosing a tea-break bar?

One-bar treat shoppers

If you want something ready to eat during a short break, check whether the pack contains one bar, two declared portions or several individually wrapped bars.

Portion- and sugar-aware shoppers

Compare the stated serving size alongside calories, total sugars and saturated fat. A figure per 100g is not the same as a figure for the bar you plan to eat.

Shoppers checking ingredients

Milk, wheat, soya, peanuts, egg and nuts appear in different bar descriptions and allergen statements. Read the current wrapper for the specific product, including any precautionary wording relevant to you.

What should you check before choosing?

Start with the pack quantity and declared portion, then compare nutrition on the same serving basis and read the ingredients. The survey figures below come from the Food Standards Agency and Ipsos Northern Ireland’s 2024 tracker of 611 interviewees in Northern Ireland; they describe shopping behaviour, not preferences for a morning tea-break bar.

PriorityWhat to checkYour needs
Portion size Read the net weight, pack count and number of declared portions. TWIX states that its 75g Xtra twin pack contains two 37.5g portions. I want an amount that fits my break, whether that means a small wafer bar or one portion from a larger pack.
Nutrition label Compare calories, total sugars and saturated fat per bar or per declared portion, not a mixture of per-bar and per-100g figures. Traffic-light colours and numerical values describe different aspects of the label. I want to compare what I plan to eat. In the Food Standards Agency and Ipsos Northern Ireland’s 2024 survey, 49% of the 611 interviewees said they actively used traffic-light labelling when food shopping.
Ingredients and allergens Read the ingredient list, highlighted allergens and any may-contain statement on the current wrapper. Biscuit, wafer and peanut bars have different ingredient profiles. If I need to avoid an ingredient, I need the details for this exact bar, not an assumption based on its brand or chocolate coating.
Pack format Distinguish an individual bar from a twin pack or multipack. For an individually wrapped multipack, check both the number of bars purchased and the serving information for one bar. For one morning break, I may want to buy just one bar; a multipack serves a different shopping need even if each bar is individually wrapped.
Promotions Check the product and portion you would choose without the promotion, then check the pack quantity and ingredients. I do not want a promotion to decide the format for me. In the Food Standards Agency and Ipsos Northern Ireland’s 2024 survey, 49% of the 611 interviewees said promotions made them more likely to buy chocolate confectionery, crisps and snacks; that measure is not specific to tea-break bars.

What is easy to overlook?

  • Assuming one pack means one portion

A twin pack can declare more than one portion. Mars states that the TWIX Xtra 75g pack contains two 37.5g portions.

Read the net weight and portions-per-pack statement before deciding how much of the pack you intend to eat.

  • Choosing on calories alone

Calories do not show the bar’s portion weight, total sugars, saturated fat or ingredients. Mars lists 192 kcal, 14.1g sugars and 10.8g protein per 47g SNICKERS Protein bar; its allergen statement also needs checking.

Compare the values that matter to you on the same portion basis, then read the ingredient and allergen information.

  • Expecting similar bars to contain the same allergens

The reviewed KitKat wafer contains milk and wheat, while the standard SNICKERS ingredient list includes peanuts. Some reviewed products also carry may-contain warnings.

Check the current wrapper of the exact bar, including its precautionary allergen statement.

Questions about portions and ingredients

Is a twin chocolate bar always one portion?

No. Mars declares two 37.5g portions in the reviewed TWIX Xtra 75g pack, while its reviewed MARS 40g bar declares one portion per pack. Check the statement on the exact format you buy.

Which of the reviewed familiar bars has the smallest portion?

The reviewed KitKat 2 Finger Milk bar is 20.7g, smaller than the reviewed 40–45g standard bars. Nestlé lists 104 kcal and 10.2g total sugars for that 20.7g bar; it contains milk and wheat. A smaller bar weight alone does not answer which ingredients suit you.

Is total sugar on the wrapper the same as free sugar?

No. Total sugars and free sugars are different measures, so the wrapper’s total-sugars figure should not be treated as a direct free-sugars calculation. Use the stated total sugars to compare products on an equivalent portion basis.

Should I check the wrapper again if I know the brand?

Yes. Ingredients and precautionary statements differ between products: the reviewed SNICKERS ingredient list includes peanuts, KitKat contains milk and wheat, and Tesco’s listing for a 50g TWIX twin bar identifies milk, wheat and soya. Check the current wrapper of the specific bar before eating if an allergen is relevant to you.
