Who is choosing a bar?

One-bar snack planners

If you want to take one defined portion to training, compare carbohydrate and fat per bar, not just the figures per 100 g. The Tesco labels for Penguin Original, Club Orange, Rocky Original and Blue Riband show why the portion matters.

People considering a lower-fat alternative

If lower fat matters more to you than chocolate-biscuit flavour, compare the bar with another carbohydrate snack. The NENC Prehab Hub gives a banana or cereal bar as examples in its prehabilitation guidance, rather than identifying a biscuit bar as necessary before exercise.

People checking allergens

Read the ingredients and precautionary statements on the exact pack you intend to eat. The checked Tesco bar listings identify wheat and milk ingredients, while its Rocky Original listing also says the product may contain nuts and peanuts.

What should you compare?

Start with the nutrition for one bar, then check whether that portion and its ingredients fit your plans before exercise.

PriorityWhat to checkYour needs
Carbohydrate per bar Read the per-bar figure and bar weight. Tesco lists 15.7 g for Penguin Original, 13.8 g for Club Orange, 11.9 g for Blue Riband and 11.7 g for Rocky Original; those figures apply to the named packs. I want to know what the one portion I plan to eat supplies, rather than compare multipacks by weight alone.
Fat and sugars Compare both values for the same serving size. Tesco’s checked labels range from 4.5–6.7 g fat and 6.8–10.2 g sugars per bar across those four named products. If I am looking for a lower-fat snack, I need to compare the bar with other foods rather than assume a small bar is low in fat.
Portion format Check the number of bars, each bar’s weight and whether the pack describes them as individually wrapped. The checked Tesco packs contain six or seven bars weighing 18–24.6 g each. One portion needs to be easy to take with me; buying a multipack does not mean eating the whole pack before training.
Timing and activity Consider when you will eat and what activity you have planned. The NENC Prehab Hub discusses a low-fat, high-carbohydrate snack 90–120 minutes before exercise in its prehabilitation guidance; that timing is not a rule for every workout. I may choose another snack if a chocolate biscuit bar does not fit the timing or type of food I have planned.
Ingredients and allergens Read the exact pack’s ingredients and precautionary warnings, including when changing flavour or pack size. Tesco’s Rocky Original listing, for example, warns that it may contain nuts and peanuts. Before eating a bar, I need its current label to match my ingredient and allergen requirements.

What is easy to overlook?

  • Mistaking multipack weight for one portion

The checked Tesco packs contain bars of different weights. A per-100 g nutrition panel alone does not tell you what the wrapped bar you take to training contains.

Compare bar weight with carbohydrate, fat and sugars per bar.

  • Assuming a biscuit bar has a proven workout benefit

The checked Tesco bars contain fat as well as carbohydrate; their nutrition labels do not establish that any one bar improves exercise performance.

Choose according to your portion and timing preferences, or compare a lower-fat carbohydrate snack if that is your priority.

  • Assuming similar names mean identical recipes

The checked Penguin listings from Tesco and Joybuy differ in their ingredient and nutrition details. The checked Club Orange manufacturer page and Tesco listing also show different pack sizes and nutrition figures.

Use the current physical pack for portion, ingredient and allergen decisions, especially when switching retailer or pack size.

Common questions

Does a wrapped biscuit bar need preparing?

The checked Tesco Club Orange and Rocky Original bars are ready-to-eat wrapped products. Follow the storage directions and best-before information on the pack you buy.

Should someone managing diabetes treat a biscuit bar as a standard exercise snack?

No general biscuit-bar comparison can determine that individual decision. University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust says exercise-snack choices for people managing diabetes depend on the activity and how the person manages their diabetes; follow your individual glucose-management plan and clinical advice.

Does an advertising restriction mean a chocolate biscuit bar cannot be bought?

No. Department of Health and Social Care guidance describes restrictions on advertising identifiable less-healthy food and drink products on TV and online, not a general ban on personal purchases. A bar’s category alone does not establish its individual classification under those advertising rules.
