Who is choosing?
The guest list, declared allergies and available freezer space shape which individual portions are practical to serve.
Hosts serving guests of different ages
Count the people you plan to serve, then choose a portion size and format that suit them. Retailer examples include 35ml milk lollies, 50ml fruit-and-ice-cream lollies and 80ml Calippo Mini Cola portions; the number in each pack differs.
Hosts accommodating declared allergies
Check the exact pack before serving. ASDA Groceries lists milk in its Mini Milk and Twister Mini Tropical examples, while the Sainsbury's listing for Calippo Mini Cola says it may contain milk. A gluten-free claim does not settle those other allergen questions.
Hosts with limited freezer space
Allow room for all the packs until serving and follow their storage instructions. The ASDA Assorted Milk Lollies listing says to keep the product frozen and not to refreeze it once defrosted.
What should you check before buying?
Start with the number and size of portions, then check how each lolly is served, its current label and the space needed to keep it frozen.
| Priority |
What to check |
Your needs |
| Portion count and size |
Divide your intended servings by the number of lollies per pack and round up to whole packs. ASDA Groceries lists Mini Milk at 10 × 35ml, Twister Mini Tropical at 6 × 50ml and ASDA Assorted Milk Lollies at 8 × 35ml; Sainsbury's lists Calippo Mini Cola at 5 × 80ml. |
I want enough individual portions for the guests I plan to serve, without assuming that packs with different counts and sizes will go equally far. |
| Allergens |
Read the bought pack's ingredients and precautionary allergen wording. The ASDA Groceries Mini Milk listing says it contains milk and may contain soya, pistachio nuts and peanuts; its Twister Mini Tropical listing says it contains milk and may contain soya and almonds. The Sainsbury's Calippo Mini Cola listing says it may contain milk. |
If a guest has a declared allergy, I need to check that exact product rather than rely on its flavour, format or gluten-free description. |
| Serving format |
Check the individual product's wrapper or description for a stick or squeezable format. Also check that its portion size suits the guests you intend to serve. |
Handing out stick lollies suits my setup, or I can accommodate guests squeezing a frozen pop from its wrapper. |
| Frozen storage |
Check how many packs fit in your freezer and follow each pack's storage wording. ASDA Groceries says its Assorted Milk Lollies must be kept frozen and not refrozen once defrosted. GOV.UK food-hygiene guidance says frozen food should go into the freezer as soon as it is delivered. |
I need to keep the full quantity frozen through party preparations and take out portions when they are ready to be served. |

Questions about serving ice lollies
How many packs do I need for a christening party?
Start with the number of guests you intend to serve, divide by the chosen pack's individual lolly count and round up to whole packs. Check portion volume too: ASDA Groceries lists examples of 10 × 35ml Mini Milk, 8 × 35ml own-label milk lollies and 6 × 50ml Twister Mini Tropical, while Sainsbury's lists 5 × 80ml Calippo Mini Cola.
Are water-ice lollies automatically free from milk?
No. The Sainsbury's listing for Calippo Mini Cola says it may contain milk. Check the bought pack's ingredients and precautionary allergen wording before serving a guest with a milk allergy.
Is a gluten-free description enough to check for allergies?
No. ASDA Groceries describes its Mini Milk and Twister Mini Tropical examples as gluten free, but both listings say they contain milk and give additional precautionary allergen information. Read the exact current pack for the allergens relevant to your guests.
How should I keep the lollies before guests arrive?
Keep them frozen and follow each pack's instructions. GOV.UK food-hygiene guidance says frozen food should go into the freezer as soon as it is delivered; ASDA Groceries says its Assorted Milk Lollies must not be refrozen once defrosted. Make sure all the packs fit before ordering the quantity you need.
Do HFSS promotion rules stop a private host serving ice lollies?
The Department of Health and Social Care's guidance addresses promotion and placement restrictions for relevant businesses operating in and selling to England, including retail stores and their online equivalents. That guidance does not establish a prohibition on a private host serving ice lollies at a christening party.
