Who needs which setup?

Standing-desk transcript readers

If you read transcripts and code for long periods while standing, establish the screen height you need before choosing extra display features. The Health and Safety Executive advises positioning the top of the screen around eye level and the display about an arm’s length away.

Code-and-notes multitaskers

If a transcript, editor, terminal and notes need to remain visible together, compare the usable layout at your preferred text size. BenQ’s RD280U, for example, has a taller 3:2 panel, while conventional 4K monitors use a wider 16:9 layout.

Laptop-based interview callers

If you connect a laptop for video interviews, decide whether a compatible single-cable monitor or built-in call hardware would simplify your desk. LG offers examples of both approaches; check your laptop connection and interview software before choosing between them.

What matters when choosing?

For transcripts and code at a standing desk, settle screen position first, then work out how much text must fit at a comfortable size. Treat laptop connectivity and built-in call hardware as separate decisions.

Concern What to check Who this matters to
Screen position Compare your required screen height with the stand’s adjustment range; check VESA compatibility and an arm’s range if needed. If my desk rises for standing work, I need the screen to reach eye level without an awkward viewing angle. Around 34% of consumers put standing-height positioning first.
Text workspace Compare native resolution and aspect ratio, then test the intended window layout at your preferred text size and scaling. With a transcript, code and notes open, I want enough readable space without constant window switching. For around 33% of consumers, text workspace is the main concern.
Laptop connection Confirm USB-C video support on the laptop and compare its power requirements with the monitor’s charging rating. When I move my laptop onto a standing desk, I would rather connect the display and suitable charging without managing several cables. Around 20% of consumers prioritise that connection.
Interview hardware Check whether a built-in camera and microphone suit your calls, and whether the screen resolution suits transcript work. If I do not want separate call devices on the desk, integrated hardware matters more to me than fitting the most text on screen. It is the primary need for around 13% of consumers.

Buying pitfalls

  • Assuming any adjustable stand reaches standing eye level

The Health and Safety Executive advises placing the screen top around eye level. BenQ lists 110 mm of height adjustment for the RD280U, while Dell lists 150 mm for the U2724D; neither figure alone tells you where the screen will sit on your desk.

Measure the height you need from the standing desk surface, then compare it with the monitor’s stand dimensions. If the fit is marginal, check its VESA pattern, weight and a compatible arm’s height range.

A compatible arm or a different desk arrangement may be needed if the supplied stand cannot reach the required position.

  • Assuming a USB-C port provides video and suitable charging

A monitor’s USB-C charging rating does not establish that your laptop can send video through its USB-C port or that the available power meets its requirements.

Check the laptop manufacturer’s video-output and charging specifications, then compare them with the exact monitor model and the cable you intend to use.

A separate charger or video adapter may still be needed if the laptop and monitor cannot provide the intended connection together.

  • Choosing a webcam monitor without checking text space

LG’s 27BA850-B incorporates a webcam, microphone and speakers, but its 1920 × 1080 display has fewer native pixels than the QHD and 4K models discussed here.

Decide whether fewer separate call devices matter more than keeping a transcript and code visible together. If text workspace comes first, consider a higher-resolution monitor with a separate camera.

  • Assuming a Dell U2724D will charge a laptop

Dell UK specifies the U2724D’s QHD panel and 150 mm stand adjustment, but those features do not establish a USB-C display-and-charging setup for the exact configuration you are buying.

If one-cable laptop use is essential, check the current manufacturer specification for the model’s ports, power delivery and included cable before ordering.

Relevant brands to consider

BenQ

BenQ’s RD280U is a programming-focused, 28.2-inch 3:2 monitor with a published 3840 × 2560 resolution, 110 mm stand adjustment and 100 × 100 mm VESA mounting.

  • The taller panel is worth considering when a transcript and code need vertical space; its USB-C power delivery is rated at 90 W.
  • Check whether the stand or a compatible arm can place the screen at your standing eye height. BenQ’s coding and eye-care descriptions are manufacturer claims, not a substitute for checking your layout.

Dell

Dell UK lists the UltraSharp U2724D as a 27-inch QHD monitor with 150 mm of height adjustment, plus tilt, swivel and pivot.

  • Its published stand adjustments make it a relevant conventional-screen option when positioning is a priority.
  • QHD has fewer native pixels than the 4K and 4K+ examples here. Confirm the exact model’s connections rather than assuming it can display and charge through one USB-C cable.

LG

LG UK lists the 27UP85ZK-W as a 27-inch 4K monitor with USB-C charging up to 90 W, and the 27BA850-B as a 27-inch Full HD model with an integrated webcam, microphone and speakers.

  • These models offer distinct routes for a compatible laptop connection or fewer separate interview-call devices.
  • The webcam-equipped 27BA850-B has less native pixel workspace than the 4K 27UP85ZK-W; choose according to the screen layout you need.

Common questions

What monitor adjustment matters most at a standing desk?

The screen needs to reach a position where its top is around eye level at your normal standing height. The Health and Safety Executive also advises placing the display about an arm’s length away; compare the stand’s reach with your desk setup, then check VESA mounting and a compatible arm if necessary.

Do coding interview transcripts require a 4K monitor?

Not necessarily: QHD may suit a simpler code-and-transcript layout, while 4K or 4K+ gives you more native pixels to arrange dense windows. BenQ lists 3840 × 2560 for its 3:2 RD280U, compared with the 3840 × 2160 resolution LG lists for the 16:9 27UP85ZK-W; your scaling and preferred text size determine how much you can comfortably use.

Can a USB-C monitor connect and charge my interview laptop with one cable?

It can if the laptop supports video output through USB-C and the monitor’s charging power meets the laptop’s needs. BenQ and LG list up to 90 W power delivery for the RD280U and 27UP85ZK-W respectively; check your laptop’s connection, power requirements and the cable before relying on either setup.
