Who is buying?

The useful unit depends on whether people make separate mugs or share a brewed batch.

Shared-household coffee-bag shoppers

If several people make coffee at different times, individual bags let you plan by mug. Tesco lists 10-bag Taylors and 20-bag Percol packs; check how many packs your household would use before committing to a large supply.

Office and hospitality buyers

For individual mugs, Out of Eden lists a case of 300 individually wrapped Wheatleys coffee bags. For a shared jug, commercial filter sachets are a separate option that calls for compatible brewing equipment.

Home filter-machine users

If you already brew a batch, compare ground coffee and filter sachets by your brewer's requirements rather than by coffee-bag count. Check the stated brewing method, filter-paper size and batch volume before buying in quantity.

What should you check?

Decide how the coffee will be brewed, then work out the quantity in units that fit that method.

PriorityWhat to checkYour needs
Brewing format Distinguish steeped coffee bags, over-cup filters, loose ground coffee and commercial filter sachets. For ground coffee, check the brewer and filter-paper requirements. I make mugs one at a time, so a counted coffee-bag pack is easier to plan than a batch-brewing sachet.
Quantity Check the number of bags, not just the pack weight. Costco UK lists Percol as 60 × 8 g coffee bags; four units make 240 bags. Out of Eden lists a 300-bag Wheatleys case. If 240 bags is my target, I can use four 60-bag units. A 300-bag case only makes sense if I can use and store the additional 60.
Batch size Check the sachet weight, stated brewed volume and machine capacity. Zepbrook lists Lavazza Canal Grande as 64 g × 30 and describes its professional sachets as making 1.9 litres each. When I serve a group from a jug, I need the batch size to fit my equipment and the amount people will drink.
Comparable units Compare bag with bag for individual mugs. For ground coffee or batch sachets, establish the recipe and serving size before calculating prepared cups. I want to compare like with like, rather than count one commercial sachet as one coffee bag.
Variety and storage Check roast or decaf choices, the best-before date and the pack's storage instructions. Check whether opened packs can be used as directed. Some cups may need a different variant, and I need space to keep the quantity I choose.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Counting paper filters as coffee servings

Coffee bags contain portioned coffee, while paper filters are brewing supplies. M&S lists both coffee formats and filter papers, so a large filter-paper count does not meet a target for coffee bags.

Read the product format as well as the quantity, and check that any filter paper matches your brewer.

  • Comparing unlike pack sizes

A single 8 g coffee bag, a pack of ground coffee and a 64 g commercial sachet represent different ways of preparing coffee. Their counts and weights alone do not establish the same number of drinks.

Set your brewing method and serving size before comparing quantities. For a 240-bag plan, calculate with confirmed bag counts.

  • Buying a large quantity without checking the pack date

Storage instructions can differ by product. M&S directs buyers of its cup filters to the best-before date on the pack and gives instructions for storage after opening.

Check the date on the packs you will receive and follow their storage directions, particularly if you plan to open several packs over time.

Brand and retailer references

These examples help distinguish individual-cup products from ground and commercial filter-coffee formats; they do not imply that every format is offered by each brand.

Lavazza

Lavazza offers ground coffee for filter brewing, and Zepbrook lists Lavazza Canal Grande commercial filter sachets in a 64 g × 30 case.

  • Lavazza describes Il Filtro Classico Intense as a 226.8 g, medium-dark Arabica and Robusta ground-coffee blend.
  • These ground and commercial formats are not counted coffee-bag packs; match them to the brewing equipment before comparing quantities.

Taylors of Harrogate

Tesco lists Taylors Italian coffee bags in a 10-bag, 75 g pack, a format for planning individual mugs.

  • Twenty-four 10-bag packs would provide 240 bags, if that pack size is the one purchased.
  • Check the count on the particular variant and bundle; a weight or multi-pack description alone is not a bag count.

Douwe Egberts

Costco UK lists Douwe Egberts Pure Decaff Medium Roast as a 400 g ground-coffee product.

  • The listing identifies a decaf ground-coffee option for shoppers considering a brewed batch.
  • A 400 g pack does not specify a number of individual coffee bags or prepared cups; check the label and your brewing method.

M&S

M&S lists coffee bags, ground coffee, cup filters and packs of 40 coffee filter papers.

  • The range gives shoppers different preparation formats to distinguish during a weekly shop.
  • Its paper filters are not coffee servings. Check the specific product label for contents, dates and storage instructions.

Sainsbury's

Sainsbury's lists own-brand 227 g ground coffee alongside Taylors Rich Italian coffee bags in packs of 10.

  • The listed formats allow a choice between ground coffee and counted individual bags.
  • Check the exact pack and local listing before using it in a 240-bag calculation.

Ri Xin Yunnan Pu'er 2.0 Series drip coffee, eight 10 g bags

Ri Xin Yunnan Pu'er 2.0 Series Drip Coffee 10 g × 8 Bags

The eight portioned drip bags suit an over-cup brewing plan rather than a filter-machine batch. At eight bags per pack, 30 packs would contain 240 bags; check whether that quantity fits how you intend to shop and store them.

Common questions

Do I need one box containing exactly 240 coffee bags?

No. If 240 individual bags is the requirement, four 60-bag units reach that count; Costco UK lists a Percol 60 × 8 g coffee-bag format. Out of Eden lists a 300-bag Wheatleys case if you can use and store 60 additional bags. Check the count on the product you actually order.

Will commercial filter-coffee sachets work in a domestic brewer?

Check the machine, jug, filter and batch capacity first. Zepbrook describes its commercial sachets for professional coffee-maker jugs and machines and states a brewed volume of 1.9 litres per sachet; that does not establish suitability for a smaller domestic brewer.

How do I choose ground coffee for a filter brewer?

Check that the coffee and grind suit your brewing method, then use the brewer's and pack's directions. Lavazza's filter-coffee guidance recommends a medium-coarse grind for its method and explains that grind size affects how quickly water passes through the grounds.

What should I check before buying coffee in bulk?

Check the actual pack's best-before date, storage instructions and contents, along with the space you have to store it. GOV.UK explains best-before labelling, while M&S directs buyers of its cup filters to the date on the pack and provides instructions for storage after opening.
