Who is each format for?

Hosts without a capsule machine

If you can provide hot water but not a coffee machine, coffee bags offer a way to make individual cups. Raw Bean Coffee describes its pyramid bags as ground coffee brewed in hot water, without a machine or grinder.

Households using an existing machine

Start with the machine’s system name, not the appearance of a capsule. Nespresso Original and Vertuo do not interchange, and Dolce Gusto, Tassimo and Lavazza A Modo Mio each call for their corresponding format.

Hosts serving different drink preferences

If guests may want decaf, milk-based drinks or hot chocolate, check the drinks available for the machine you have. The UK ranges from Dolce Gusto and Tassimo include these categories; coffee bags alone will not provide the non-coffee choices.

What should you check before buying?

Coffee bags

Choose when: Hot water is available but a compatible capsule machine is not.

Allow for: Brewing each bag in hot water and checking the pack directions when planning servings.

Machine capsules

Choose when: You know the available machine’s system and want drinks made for it.

Allow for: System-specific capsules and, for some milk drinks, more than one pod per prepared drink.

PriorityWhat to checkYour needs
Machine fit Read the machine label or manual before choosing capsules. We Try Coffee notes that Nespresso Original and Vertuo do not interchange. Lavazza also names Espria, Espria+, Magia, Magia+, Fantasia and Fantasia+ as exceptions for its current A Modo Mio capsules. I have a machine, so I need capsules specified for its exact system and model.
Serving setup For bags, check the hot-water and brewing directions on the pack. Raw Bean Coffee describes its pyramid bags as brewing in hot water without a machine or grinder; capsules require a matching machine. There will be hot water at the gathering, but I do not want to rely on bringing a capsule machine.
Drink choice Check the range for the machine you have, then check individual products. Dolce Gusto and Tassimo list coffee, decaf and chocolate drinks in their UK ranges. Some guests may want decaf or hot chocolate as well as coffee.
Number of drinks Check the stated prepared-drink yield, not just the pod count. We Try Coffee notes that some Dolce Gusto milk drinks use two pods per drink; for coffee bags, check how many bags are in the pack. I need to work out how many cups the supplies will make for guests.
Used bags and capsules Follow the exact product’s disposal directions and check the collection route available locally. Nespresso UK lists collection and drop-off options for its capsules; one supplier’s bag-material claim does not describe every coffee bag. I want a practical plan for collecting used bags or capsules after the gathering.
Outdoor service Plan where hot water will be handled and drinks served. Keep drink preparation separate from bonfire and firework activities, and follow current official event-safety guidance. Guests will be moving around outdoors, so I need a clear place to prepare and collect drinks.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Buying capsules before identifying the machine

Nespresso Original and Vertuo capsules do not interchange. Lavazza also lists specific A Modo Mio machines that cannot use its current capsules.

Check the system and full model name on the machine before choosing a pack, especially if it is an older A Modo Mio model.

  • Treating coffee bags as machine capsules

Coffee bags brew in hot water rather than supplying the capsule format a pod machine requires.

Choose bags for a hot-water setup and capsules only for a confirmed compatible machine.

  • Counting pods instead of prepared milk drinks

We Try Coffee notes that some Dolce Gusto milk drinks use two pods, so the number of pods in a box need not equal the number of drinks.

Check the pack’s prepared-drink yield when estimating supplies for guests.

  • Assuming all used formats have the same disposal route

Bag materials and capsule collection arrangements differ by product. Nespresso UK provides specified routes for returning its capsules.

Read the exact pack’s instructions and check which collection option you can use; do not apply one brand’s claim to another product.

Brand and system references

These ranges illustrate format and drink-choice checks; a brand mentioned here is not necessarily represented among the Joybuy products below.

Nespresso

Nespresso UK lists Original capsules for espresso and lungo preparations; Vertuo is a separate capsule system.

  • The UK Original range includes flavoured and decaffeinated coffees, and Nespresso lists capsule collection and drop-off routes.
  • Original and Vertuo capsules do not interchange, as the independent We Try Coffee compatibility guide explains.

NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto

Its UK range includes black coffee, white coffee, hot chocolate and decaf choices for a Dolce Gusto machine.

  • Dolce Gusto says its UK range contains more than 40 drink varieties; check individual products for the drinks guests want.
  • We Try Coffee notes that some milk drinks use two pods per prepared drink.

Tassimo

Tassimo UK groups its T-DISC range into categories including black coffee, latte, hot chocolate and decaf.

  • Those categories give hosts several drink types to check for a compatible Tassimo machine.
  • We Try Coffee describes Tassimo as a barcode-led T-DISC system; do not substitute another capsule format based on appearance.

Lavazza

Lavazza’s A Modo Mio range focuses on capsules for that machine system, including decaf listings.

  • The range gives owners of compatible A Modo Mio machines coffee choices to compare.
  • Lavazza excludes Espria, Espria+, Magia, Magia+, Fantasia and Fantasia+ from compatibility with its current A Modo Mio capsules.

Sainsbury's

This is a grocery retailer, not a capsule-machine system. Its coffee-pod category groups products by compatible format.

  • Its category filters include Dolce Gusto-, Lavazza Modo Mio-, Nespresso- and Tassimo-compatible products.
  • Check the individual product against your machine rather than relying on a general coffee-pod category.

Coffee bags on Joybuy

These two coffee-bag options are relevant if you plan to serve coffee using hot water rather than a capsule machine. If the bags specifically need to be pyramid-shaped, check each product’s bag construction before buying.

Questions about coffee for Bonfire Night

Can I use pyramid coffee bags in a pod machine?

No. Pyramid coffee bags contain ground coffee for brewing in hot water; they are not capsules made for a machine system. Choose capsules that match the machine if that is how you intend to prepare drinks.

Will Nespresso Original capsules fit a Vertuo machine?

No. We Try Coffee’s compatibility guide states that Nespresso Original and Vertuo capsules do not interchange. Identify the system on the machine before buying.

What if guests want hot chocolate or decaf?

Dolce Gusto and Tassimo list hot chocolate and decaf products in their UK ranges. If you have one of those machines, check the exact drinks and matching capsule format; if you are serving coffee bags, provide any non-coffee drinks separately.

Does one Dolce Gusto pod always make one drink?

No. We Try Coffee notes that some Dolce Gusto milk drinks use one coffee pod and one milk pod. Check the pack’s prepared-drink yield before working out how many guests it will serve.

Does Bonfire Night require a particular coffee format?

Choose the format around your hot-water setup or confirmed machine, not the occasion itself. Follow current official guidance for bonfires and fireworks, and arrange a separate place to handle hot water and serve drinks.
