Who is choosing the coffee?

The useful starting point for a brunch host is the brewer already available and whether guests want a choice of regular and decaf coffee.

Hosts with a capsule machine

Check the machine model before choosing coffee. Lavazza A Modo Mio, illy Iperespresso and Nespresso Original-compatible capsules have different fit requirements, according to their respective product ranges.

Hosts serving regular and decaf

Look for a decaf option made for the same brewer as the regular coffee. Lavazza lists A Modo Mio decaf, while illy lists decaf in several distinct capsule and pod formats.

Hosts without a compatible capsule machine

Consider an individually portioned ground-coffee filter instead of capsules that need a particular machine. Rombouts lists regular and decaf one-cup filters; check how the filter is prepared before buying.

What matters when choosing a format?

Start with the brewing equipment, then decide which drinks to offer and how you will deal with the used portions.

PriorityWhat to checkYour needs
Machine fit Match the capsule format to the exact machine model. Lavazza names exceptions within its A Modo Mio range; Tesco warns of possible issues with certain U, Expert and Prodigio models bought after 25 July 2016. I want to serve coffee using the machine already in the kitchen, without buying capsules that will not fit it.
Drink choice Check regular and decaf options within the same format. Lavazza lists A Modo Mio decaf, and illy lists decaf separately for Iperespresso, Nespresso Original-compatible machines and E.S.E. brewers. Some guests may want decaf, so I need an option that works with the brewing setup I plan to use.
Preparation Decide between capsules for an existing compatible machine and individually portioned ground-coffee filters. Rombouts lists one-cup filters, but they are not espresso-machine capsules. I would like to make individual cups during brunch; whether that means using a capsule machine or preparing a filter coffee depends on my equipment.
Disposal Check the capsule material and a local collection route before relying on recycling. Northern Ireland’s Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs says coffee pods need separate collection rather than conventional recycling sorting; Podback provides a postcode-based route checker. After serving several coffees, I want to know where the used capsules can actually go.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing by brand rather than capsule system

The same brand can sell coffee in different formats. For example, illy’s Iperespresso capsules are distinct from its Nespresso Original-compatible line.

Read both the machine model and the pack’s compatibility statement. Check Lavazza’s named A Modo Mio exceptions and Tesco’s caveat for certain U, Expert and Prodigio machines where relevant.

  • Treating every single-serve coffee as a machine pod

Capsules, E.S.E. pods and one-cup ground-coffee filters require different brewing setups. A Rombouts one-cup filter is not a capsule for an espresso machine.

Choose the preparation method first, then select a portioned coffee made for it.

  • Putting used capsules in mixed recycling by default

Northern Ireland’s Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs says coffee pods are not suited to conventional recycling collection and sorting.

Check the available route for your postcode and pod material using Podback’s Recycling Checker, and follow the collection instructions.

  • Buying decaf in an incompatible format

A decaf capsule cannot serve as a last-minute substitute if it does not fit the machine used for the regular coffee.

Check the decaf pack against the same machine system before brunch, or choose a suitable one-cup filter route.

Brand and format references

These brands illustrate different brewing formats; a brand name alone does not establish which product fits your equipment.

Lavazza

Lavazza sells A Modo Mio capsules and separately presents ground coffee for moka and espresso preparation.

  • Its A Modo Mio range includes decaf and lungo choices.
  • Lavazza lists Espria, Espria+, Magia, Magia+, Fantasia and Fantasia+ as exceptions to compatibility with these capsules.

illy

illy separates its Iperespresso capsules from its Nespresso Original-compatible capsules and E.S.E. pods.

  • illy lists decaf products in these distinct formats.
  • Iperespresso capsules are for illy’s Iperespresso system, not its separate Nespresso Original-compatible line.

Tesco Finest

Tesco describes its Finest Ristretto aluminium capsules as designed for Nespresso machines.

  • The Ristretto listing specifies a pack of 10 capsules weighing 54g.
  • Tesco warns of possible compatibility issues with certain U, Expert and Prodigio models bought after 25 July 2016.

Rombouts

Rombouts lists individually portioned one-cup filters as a ground-coffee route rather than a capsule-machine format.

  • Its one-cup filter range includes Original, Italian Style, Colombian and Decaf.
  • These filters do not fit a capsule machine in place of espresso capsules.

Common questions

Can I use any coffee capsule in my machine?

No. Match the capsule to the exact machine system: Lavazza A Modo Mio and illy Iperespresso have their own compatibility rules, while illy sells a separate Nespresso Original-compatible line. Check the model as well as the system name; Tesco warns of possible issues with certain U, Expert and Prodigio machines bought after 25 July 2016.

What if some brunch guests want decaf?

Choose a decaf product made for the brewer you are using. Lavazza lists A Modo Mio decaf, and illy lists decaf for Iperespresso, Nespresso Original-compatible machines and E.S.E. brewers. A decaf product in one format is not interchangeable with another.

Can used coffee capsules go in household recycling?

Do not put them in mixed recycling without checking your local arrangements. Northern Ireland’s Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs says pods require separate collection because conventional facilities are not suited to sorting them; Podback’s Recycling Checker can help identify a route for your postcode.

When does ground coffee make more sense for brunch?

Consider ground coffee or a one-cup filter when you do not have the machine required for the capsules you are considering. Lavazza describes ground coffee for moka and espresso preparation, while Rombouts offers individually portioned filters. Check the brewing method you have available: a one-cup filter does not replace an espresso capsule in a machine.
