Who is choosing?

Hosts serving black coffee

If you want coffee alongside a cooked breakfast, decide whether to serve a longer black drink or a short espresso. Then check which cup styles your machine and its compatible capsules offer.

Households with different drink preferences

If one person wants black coffee and another wants a milk drink, decaf or hot chocolate, check the drinks available for your machine’s pod system before settling on a pack.

Shoppers restocking an existing machine

Match the pack to the exact machine family. Nespresso Original and Vertuo are separate systems; Dolce Gusto, Tassimo T DISCs and Lavazza A Modo Mio also have their own compatibility requirements.

What should you check?

Confirm compatibility before comparing cup styles, ingredients and the practicalities of buying and disposing of more pods.

PriorityWhat to checkYour needs
Machine fit Match the pack to the machine family, including Original versus Vertuo. For Lavazza A Modo Mio, check the exact model: Lavazza excludes several older Espria, Magia and Fantasia variants from its current capsule compatibility guidance. I already have a machine and need pods made for that specific system, not simply a pack labelled as coffee capsules.
Cup style Check the drink name and stated serving volume where available, rather than relying on intensity. Nespresso describes its Vertuo Arondio as a 150 ml Gran Lungo and Double Espresso Scuro as an 80 ml double espresso; those sizes apply to those capsules. For breakfast I might want a longer black coffee, while someone else at the table would rather have a short espresso.
Milk and ingredients Read the individual ingredients and allergen panel for prepared milk drinks. NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto lists milk powder and sugar in its Starbucks Caffè Latte capsules; do not assume another drink has the same recipe. I may want to add milk myself or check what is already in a cappuccino-style pod.
Repeat choice Check current compatible ranges for the drinks you expect to buy again. Tesco and Sainsbury’s list Nespresso-compatible capsules, but that description should not be taken to mean Vertuo compatibility. If several people use the machine, I want to know whether I can find their preferred black-coffee or decaf styles in the right format.
Used pods Check the pod material and your postcode in Podback’s Recycle Checker. Podback says the available route and instructions depend on location and pod type. Before relying on a collection option, I want to know what I would actually do with the used pods where I live.

Common pod-buying mistakes

  • Treating coffee pods as interchangeable

A capsule for one machine family cannot be assumed to work in another. Even Nespresso Original and Vertuo use different capsules.

Read the format on both the appliance and the pack. For Lavazza A Modo Mio, check the machine model against Lavazza’s compatibility exclusions too.

  • Choosing by intensity alone

An intensity description does not tell you the prepared cup volume or whether the drink contains milk.

Check the drink style and serving instructions. Nespresso specifies 150 ml for Vertuo Arondio Gran Lungo and 80 ml for Vertuo Double Espresso Scuro; these are different serving choices within the same machine family.

  • Assuming used pods go in household recycling

Podback’s collection methods and handling instructions vary by location and by aluminium or plastic pod type.

Use Podback’s Recycle Checker for your postcode and follow its instructions for the pods you use, including separating materials where required.

  • Overlooking ingredients in milk-coffee pods

A prepared milk drink can contain ingredients beyond coffee. NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto lists milk powder and sugar in its Starbucks Caffè Latte capsules.

Check each product’s ingredients and allergen panel. If you prefer to decide what milk to add, consider a compatible black-coffee pod instead.

Brands and pod systems

Brand names alone do not establish capsule compatibility: check the system and, where necessary, the machine model.

Nespresso

Nespresso offers separate Original and Vertuo coffee systems. Its Original range includes espresso and lungo capsules, while individual Vertuo capsules have their own stated cup sizes.

  • A choice of shorter and longer coffee styles within the appropriate system.
  • Nespresso says Vertuo capsules are exclusively for Vertuo machines; Original capsules are for Original machines.

NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto

Its UK range includes black coffee, milk drinks and hot chocolate for Dolce Gusto machines.

  • The brand’s UK range lists more than 40 drink varieties, including black-coffee choices.
  • Check the ingredients of each milk-based drink; recipes can include milk powder and sugar.

Tassimo

Tassimo uses T DISCs for coffee and other hot drinks in Tassimo machines.

  • Tassimo says its INTELLIBREW system reads each T DISC barcode to set drink volume, water temperature and brewing time.
  • T DISCs are a Tassimo format, not substitutes for capsules from other machine systems.

Lavazza

Lavazza’s A Modo Mio range includes espresso-focused capsules. The format matters more than the Lavazza name alone when checking machine fit.

  • Lavazza lists A Modo Mio Intenso at intensity 13/13 and Qualità Rossa at 10/13 on its own scale.
  • Lavazza excludes named older A Modo Mio Espria, Magia and Fantasia variants from its current capsule compatibility guidance.

Tesco

Tesco is a retail option for checking Nespresso-compatible capsules, rather than a separate coffee-pod machine format.

  • Its Nespresso-compatible listings have included Tesco Finest, L’OR and Starbucks options.
  • Check each pack’s machine compatibility and the current listing before choosing it.

Sainsbury’s

Sainsbury’s lists own-range and branded capsules on its Nespresso-compatible shelf.

  • Its listed options include espresso and lungo styles.
  • A Nespresso-compatible listing does not establish fit with Vertuo or other pod-machine systems.

Questions about breakfast coffee pods

Can Nespresso Original capsules go in a Vertuo machine?

No. Nespresso says Vertuo machines use Vertuo capsules and Original machines use Original capsules. Check your machine family before buying a pack described as Nespresso-compatible.

Which pod style works for a longer black coffee with breakfast?

Look for an Americano, lungo or Gran Lungo option made for your machine, and check its stated serving size if volume matters. Nespresso specifies 150 ml for its Vertuo Arondio Gran Lungo; that figure does not apply to every lungo-style pod.

How can I control what milk goes into a pod coffee?

Choose a compatible black-coffee pod and add the milk yourself if you want to decide what goes in. Check individual ingredients: NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto lists milk powder and sugar in its Starbucks Caffè Latte capsules.

How do I check a recycling route for used pods?

Use Podback’s Recycle Checker for your postcode and pod type. Podback says collection options vary by area and gives different handling instructions for aluminium and plastic pods, including different bags where bags are required.
