Who is topping up?

Existing pod-machine owners

If you need a quick refill, identify the system on your machine before choosing a familiar-looking capsule. Nespresso Original and Vertuo are separate formats, and Tassimo says its machines use official T DISCs.

Households making different drinks

If the next few days call for more than one coffee style, check the drinks within your machine’s range. NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto lists coffee and chocolate options, while Tassimo lists coffee, tea and hot chocolate T DISCs.

Shoppers considering compatible capsules

If you own a Nespresso Original machine, Tesco Groceries lists supermarket and branded capsules in its Nespresso-compatible range. Check the individual pack for Original compatibility and the number of capsules rather than relying on the shelf category alone.

What should you check before buying?

Match the machine first, then choose a drink and pack size that cover the period until your next shop.

Priority What to check Your needs
Machine compatibility Read the system wording on both machine and pack. Nespresso says Vertuo pods fit only Vertuo machines; Tassimo specifies official T DISCs. Lavazza lists exceptions for some A Modo Mio models, including Espria and Magia. I need pods that work in the machine I already own. A pack marked simply ‘Nespresso compatible’ is not enough to establish that it fits a Vertuo machine.
Drink and cup style Nespresso lists espresso and lungo for Original, and espresso through mug-size drinks for Vertuo. NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto lists black coffee and chocolate drinks; Tassimo lists coffee, tea and hot chocolate T DISCs. Will this top-up make the drinks we plan to have before the next shop? The choice still has to stay within our machine’s system.
Servings in the pack Compare the labelled number of drinks as well as the capsule count. For a milk drink, check its preparation instructions rather than assuming every capsule represents one serving. I want enough of the drinks we use without choosing a larger pack solely because it contains more pods.
Recycling route Use Podback’s Recycle Checker with your machine, pod type and postcode. The available route can depend on those details and the participating brand. If disposal convenience matters to me, I need a route available for these particular pods where I live.

What can go wrong with a quick top-up?

  • Assuming coffee capsules are interchangeable

A capsule for one system may be unusable in another. In particular, Nespresso Original capsules are not Vertuo pods, and Tassimo says other pod systems do not work in its machines.

Check the system name on your machine or previous box against the compatibility wording on the new pack. For Lavazza A Modo Mio, check the machine model too.

  • Counting milk-drink capsules as finished drinks

Drink preparation and labelled serving counts can differ between packs, so the number of capsules alone may not tell you how many of your chosen drinks the box makes.

Choose the drink style first, then compare the pack’s labelled servings and preparation instructions with what you expect to use before your next shop.

  • Assuming a pod has a local recycling route

Podback’s collection options depend on details such as the pod type, participating brand and postcode.

If recycling access affects your choice, check the route for the specific pods and your postcode before buying, then follow the instructions for that route.

Which brands and systems might you see?

Nespresso

Nespresso has separate Original and Vertuo capsule ranges. Its UK range lists espresso and lungo for Original, while Vertuo includes espresso, double espresso, gran lungo and mug-size choices.

  • The distinct ranges let you look for the cup style offered by your machine’s system.
  • Nespresso says Vertuo pods fit only Vertuo machines; do not treat Original-compatible capsules as substitutes.

NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto

Its UK range lists more than 40 drink varieties, including black coffee, white coffee and chocolate drinks.

  • There are different drink types to consider when topping up a Dolce Gusto machine.
  • Check that the pack specifies Dolce Gusto compatibility and how many prepared drinks it makes.

Tassimo

Tassimo’s T DISC range includes coffee, tea and hot chocolate.

  • A Tassimo owner can choose among these drink categories within the T DISC range.
  • Tassimo says its machines work exclusively with official T DISCs, not Nespresso or Dolce Gusto pods.

Lavazza

Lavazza’s A Modo Mio range offers capsules for its named machine system.

  • Check the A Modo Mio range when topping up a compatible Lavazza machine.
  • Lavazza lists Espria, Espria+, Magia, Magia+, Fantasia and Fantasia+ as incompatible with the capsules on its UK A Modo Mio page.

Tesco

Tesco Groceries groups coffee pods by compatibility, including Nespresso, Dolce Gusto, Tassimo and Lavazza A Modo Mio categories.

  • Its Nespresso-compatible category lists Tesco Finest alongside other capsule brands.
  • A retailer category is not a substitute for checking the exact compatibility statement on a pack, especially for Nespresso Original versus Vertuo.

Common questions

Can Original-compatible capsules go in a Nespresso Vertuo machine?

No. Nespresso identifies Original and Vertuo as separate systems and says Vertuo pods fit only Vertuo machines. For an Original machine, check that a compatible capsule pack explicitly names Nespresso Original.

Can I use supermarket own-label pods in a Tassimo machine?

Tassimo says its machines work exclusively with official T DISCs, not supermarket pods made for other systems. Look for official Tassimo T DISCs when topping up that machine.

How do I choose a small pack for a top-up?

Match the machine system first, then compare the drinks included and the pack’s labelled number of servings with what you expect to use before your next shop. For a milk drink, check the preparation instructions rather than assuming one capsule always makes one drink.

Can I recycle used coffee pods where I live?

Use Podback’s Recycle Checker with your machine, pod type and postcode to see which collection route applies. Do not assume that a pod belongs in ordinary household recycling.

Do A Modo Mio capsules fit every Lavazza A Modo Mio machine?

No. Lavazza lists Espria, Espria+, Magia, Magia+, Fantasia and Fantasia+ as incompatible with the capsules on its UK A Modo Mio page. Check your machine’s model name before buying.
