Who is choosing these pods?

Pod-machine owners choosing an afternoon coffee

If you already own a Dolce Gusto, Bosch Tassimo, Nespresso Vertuo or Lavazza A Modo Mio machine, start with its capsule format. Blend preferences matter only once you have a pod that fits.

Drinkers who prefer a longer coffee

Dolce Gusto Americano, Tassimo Kenco Pure Colombian and Lavazza Lungo Dolce are described by their makers as large-cup or lungo options. Their stated flavour profiles give you a way to choose within your machine system.

Drinkers considering a less intense style or decaf

A lighter-tasting blend and a decaffeinated pod answer different needs. Lavazza lists A Modo Mio Lungo Dolce at intensity 6/13 and a separate Decaf option at 7/13; check the exact capsule’s compatibility with your machine.

What should you check first?

Match the capsule format to your machine, then choose the cup style and flavour you want. If pod disposal affects your decision, check the collection route for your postcode too.

PriorityWhat to checkYour needs
Machine fit Match the exact capsule system to your appliance. Lavazza’s A Modo Mio range page excludes Espria, Espria+, Magia, Magia+, Fantasia and Fantasia+ machines, so check the model as well as the system name. I want pods I can use in the machine I already own, without assuming that different capsule systems are interchangeable.
Cup style Look for a stated large-cup or lungo preparation rather than assuming every pod makes a mug. Nespresso specifies 230 ml for Vertuo Intenso; Lavazza describes Lungo Dolce for a large mug. A longer coffee suits my afternoon break, so the intended serving matters as much as the blend name.
Blend and flavour Compare the maker’s roast, bean blend and tasting notes within a compatible system. NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto rates Americano 4/11, Lavazza rates Lungo Dolce 6/13, and Nespresso rates Vertuo Intenso 9; those are different brand scales. I might prefer fruity or smooth notes over a dark-roasted taste, but I would not compare those intensity numbers as though they used one scale.
Decaf choice Choose a product explicitly labelled decaffeinated if that is your aim. Do not use a low intensity rating as a measure of caffeine per serving. For a later coffee break, I want to make a deliberate choice about decaf rather than guess from the flavour description.
Pod disposal Recycle Now says coffee pods are not usually accepted in household recycling collections. Check Podback’s local drop-off or kerbside options and its instructions for separating aluminium and plastic pods. Before settling on a pod format, I want to know which collection option I could use where I live.

What can catch you out?

  • Choosing the blend before checking the machine

Dolce Gusto pods, Tassimo T-DISCs, Nespresso Vertuo capsules and Lavazza A Modo Mio capsules use distinct systems. Even the A Modo Mio range has stated exclusions for certain machine models.

Read the name and model on your appliance, then check the exact pod’s compatibility before choosing a flavour.

  • Reading intensity as a caffeine figure

The makers use different intensity scales, which do not provide a cross-brand caffeine comparison. A lower intensity number is not a reason to treat a pod as decaffeinated.

Use roast and flavour notes to choose a taste. If you want decaf, select a compatible pod explicitly labelled decaffeinated.

  • Putting used pods in ordinary household recycling

Recycle Now says pods are not usually accepted in household recycling collections. Podback collection options vary by location, and aluminium and plastic pods need to be kept separate for its routes.

Check the collection options for your postcode and follow the instructions for your pod material.

Brand and pod-system references

These examples illustrate different machine formats and blend styles; a brand’s presence here does not mean its capsules fit another system.

NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto

A machine-specific range that includes black coffee and milk-based drinks. Its Americano is presented as a large-cup Arabica-and-Robusta blend.

  • NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto describes Americano as lightly roasted, with fruity and floral notes, and rates it intensity 4/11.
  • Its Americano pods are designed for Dolce Gusto machines, not other capsule systems.

Tassimo

A T-DISC system for Bosch Tassimo machines, with black-coffee options including Kenco Pure Colombian.

  • Tassimo describes Kenco Pure Colombian as a 16-pod, large-cup Arabica coffee with fruity notes and a smooth finish.
  • Tassimo says its Kenco pods work with Bosch Tassimo machines; that does not make them suitable for competing capsule systems.

Lavazza

Its A Modo Mio range includes Lungo Dolce, which Lavazza describes as a smooth, fruity coffee for a large mug or a drink with milk.

  • Lavazza rates Lungo Dolce intensity 6/13 and lists a separate A Modo Mio Decaf option.
  • Lavazza’s A Modo Mio range page excludes Espria, Espria+, Magia, Magia+, Fantasia and Fantasia+ machines; confirm your model before buying.

Nespresso

Its Vertuo Intenso capsule is a 230 ml coffee made with Guatemalan Robusta and Central and South American Arabicas.

  • Nespresso describes Intenso as dark roasted, rates it intensity 9 and gives it roasted and brown-sugar tasting notes.
  • Intenso is a Vertuo capsule; do not assume it fits a Nespresso Original machine.

NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto Americano Intenso Coffee Pods, 16 Count

Coffee-pod questions

Should I choose coffee pods by intensity number alone?

No. NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto rates Americano 4/11, Lavazza rates Lungo Dolce 6/13, and Nespresso rates Vertuo Intenso 9 on their respective scales. Once you have identified pods that fit your machine, compare their stated cup style, roast and flavour notes rather than treating the numbers as directly equivalent.

Can different coffee-pod systems be used interchangeably?

No: the Dolce Gusto Americano, Tassimo Kenco Pure Colombian and Nespresso Vertuo Intenso described here are each made for their named systems. Lavazza also lists exclusions for some A Modo Mio machine models. Check your appliance’s exact system and model against the pod before buying.

Which pod styles suit a longer afternoon coffee?

Start with a large-cup or lungo option that fits your machine. Their makers describe Dolce Gusto Americano as a lightly roasted large-cup coffee, Tassimo Kenco Pure Colombian as a smooth large-cup coffee, and Lavazza Lungo Dolce as suited to a large mug. Nespresso Vertuo Intenso makes a 230 ml coffee but has a dark-roasted profile, so choose it if that flavour appeals to you.

Can used coffee pods go in normal household recycling?

Usually not: Recycle Now says pods are not usually accepted in household recycling collections. Podback lists drop-off options and some local kerbside services; check what operates at your postcode and keep aluminium and plastic pods separate as instructed.

How can I choose a decaf pod for an afternoon break?

Choose a pod explicitly labelled decaffeinated and check that it fits your machine; intensity does not tell you its caffeine content. Lavazza lists an A Modo Mio Decaf option, while the Joybuy selection above includes a Dolce Gusto Americano Decaf variant.
