Who is each format for?

Guests avoiding sugar and dairy

Look for an explicit sugar-free claim, then read the sugars value and ingredients on the pack. A drink labelled cold brew may still be a sweetened latte or concentrate.

Groups sharing a cottage kitchen

A concentrate lets guests prepare separate drinks with their chosen mixers. Check the dilution directions, caffeine per serving, opened-pack instructions and available fridge space before choosing a large carton.

Dairy-free guests with other dietary requirements

An oat latte may avoid milk without meeting a wheat-allergy or coeliac requirement. Read the exact pack’s allergen and suitability statements, as well as any caffeine warning.

What should you check before buying?

Start with the drink each guest can use, then choose a serving format that fits the number of drinkers and the cottage’s storage arrangements.

Priority What to check Your needs
Sugar Check the sugar-free claim, sugars per 100ml or 100g, and ingredients. For a concentrate, also consider what goes into the prepared drink. I want an unsweetened coffee, not a latte whose flavour name disguises added sugar.
Milk and allergens Read the milk ingredients and the exact pack’s wheat, gluten and coeliac suitability information. Dairy-free does not answer every allergen question. A guest avoids milk, but I also need to check whether an oat-based drink meets their other requirements.
Caffeine Compare the declared caffeine per 100ml with the amount being poured. Follow product warnings, particularly for concentrates. Several people will make their own drinks, so I need to know what each portion contains rather than judging by carton size.
Storage and servings Check whether refrigeration is required before or after opening, the opened-pack period, and the serving directions. Match pack size to fridge space and the length of stay. For a short stay with one coffee drinker, a single serve may be simpler; for a group, I can plan how a multi-serve pack will be used.

What is easy to overlook?

  • Assuming every cold brew is sugar-free

Tesco Groceries lists 11.0g sugars in a 250ml Tesco Finest Brown Sugar Cold Brew Latte; its Sweetened Cold Brew Coffee Concentrate contains demerara sugar. The words “cold brew” do not establish the sugar content.

If sugar-free is the requirement, check the claim and nutrition panel on the particular drink, including how a concentrate will be mixed.

  • Treating dairy-free as a complete allergen check

Marks & Spencer describes its 250ml Oat Latte Cold Brew Coffee as dairy-free but marks it unsuitable for coeliacs and people with a wheat allergy.

Check the current ingredients, allergen information and suitability statement for each guest’s requirements.

  • Pouring concentrate without checking caffeine

Tesco Groceries lists 159mg caffeine per 100ml for Solo Ready to Go Espresso and carries a warning for children, pregnant or nursing women, and people sensitive to caffeine.

Use the stated serving directions and check the caffeine in the portion being prepared. NHS guidance advises no more than 200mg caffeine a day during pregnancy, counting other sources too.

  • Choosing a large bottle before checking the fridge

Marks & Spencer says its 750ml chilled oat latte must be kept at 0°C to +5°C and cannot be frozen. A pack that needs chilling may be awkward if the cottage fridge is small or not running on arrival.

Check storage directions and fridge space before travelling, and choose a pack size that fits the number of drinkers and nights away.

Brand and product-line references

These examples illustrate different cold-brew formats; the name of a retailer or brand alone does not establish a drink’s sugar, allergen or storage details.

  • Tesco Groceries labels the 500ml carton sugar-free and without milk, and lists 10 servings.

Its oat cold-brew lattes offer dairy-free, ready-made drinks in single-serve and larger chilled formats.

  • Marks & Spencer describes both its 250ml Oat Latte Cold Brew Coffee and 750ml chilled Plant Kitchen oat latte as dairy-free.
  • The 250ml drink is marked unsuitable for coeliacs and people with a wheat allergy. The 750ml bottle requires refrigeration at 0°C to +5°C; neither should be assumed sugar-free.

Tesco Finest

Its sweetened concentrate and brown-sugar latte show why cold-brew formats need separate ingredient checks.

  • Tesco Groceries directs shoppers to mix 100ml of its Sweetened Cold Brew Coffee Concentrate with 100ml cold water.
  • That concentrate contains demerara sugar. Its Brown Sugar Cold Brew Latte contains whole milk and lists 11.0g sugars per 250ml can.

Cold-brew questions

Is “lightly sweet” the same as sugar-free?

No. Check the sugar-free claim and sugars value rather than flavour wording. Tesco Groceries lists less than 0.1g sugars per 100ml for Solo Ready to Go Espresso, but 11.0g sugars per 250ml can for Tesco Finest Brown Sugar Cold Brew Latte.

Is a dairy-free oat cold brew suitable for someone with a wheat allergy or coeliac disease?

Not automatically. Marks & Spencer describes its 250ml Oat Latte Cold Brew Coffee as dairy-free but marks it unsuitable for coeliacs and people with a wheat allergy. Check the exact drink’s current allergen and suitability information.

What should a pregnant guest check before drinking cold brew?

Check the product warning, caffeine amount and intended portion. NHS guidance advises no more than 200mg caffeine a day during pregnancy from all sources; Tesco Groceries lists 159mg per 100ml for Solo Ready to Go Espresso and says it is not recommended for pregnant or nursing women.

Does a concentrate work for several cottage guests?

It can, if its serving directions, mixers and caffeine suit the group. Tesco Groceries lists 10 servings in Solo’s 500ml carton and says to refrigerate it after opening and consume within 28 days. Check the ingredients of any milk or plant drink added separately.

Does a chilled cold-brew latte need fridge space before it is opened?

Check the specific bottle: Marks & Spencer says its 750ml chilled Plant Kitchen oat latte must be kept at 0°C to +5°C and cannot be frozen. Make sure suitable refrigeration is available for the journey and at the cottage.
