Who is choosing?

Households planning after-school snacks

Individual bags make it easier to plan how many snack occasions a pack will cover. In a British Nutrition Foundation survey reported in September 2025, 76% of more than 2,500 UK schoolchildren aged 10–13 said they normally snack after school during the week; that figure does not indicate a preference for crisps or multipacks.

Buyers comparing fat and salt

For a comparison between conventional crisps and baked potato snacks, read the values per inner bag as well as per 100g. Bag sizes differ, and the NHS identifies crisps among salty foods to watch and cut back on.

Households checking dietary labels

Check every flavour in a variety pack. A plain salted product may be labelled vegan or gluten-free while another flavour in the range contains milk or cereal ingredients.

What matters when choosing?

Start with the bag count you will use, then compare the exact bags and flavours rather than relying on the multipack name.

PriorityWhat to checkYour needs
Individual bags Check the number of bags and the weight of each. A bigger multipack does not necessarily contain bigger bags. I want enough sealed bags for the snack occasions I have planned. The British Nutrition Foundation reported in September 2025 that 76% of over 2,500 surveyed UK schoolchildren aged 10–13 normally snack after school during the week; this describes the occasion, not a preference for portioned crisps.
Per-bag values Compare fat and salt per inner bag, then use per-100g figures to compare different bag sizes. Tesco lists 7.8g fat and 0.30g salt per 25g bag of Walkers Ready Salted; Walkers lists 2.8g fat and 0.19g salt per 22g bag of Oven Baked Sea Salt. If I am choosing between conventional crisps and a baked potato snack, I want the figures for the exact product and bag size, not a claim based on the cooking method alone.
Product format Check whether the pack contains sliced potato crisps, a baked potato-flake snack or another potato snack. Compare the nutrition panel rather than assuming a hand-cooked product has less fat or salt. Texture and the type of snack matter to me, so I want to know what is actually inside each bag.
Flavours and allergens Read the ingredients and allergen information for every flavour, including any precautionary wording. Do not apply a plain salted flavour’s dietary label to an entire range. A variety pack only works for my household if each flavour we might use meets our ingredient requirements.
Pack suitability Confirm the current flavour mix, bag count and retailer availability before ordering. Check whether a single-flavour pack would leave unwanted bags. I would rather choose a pack whose contents we will use than buy extra bags solely for the larger count.

What is easy to overlook?

  • Choosing by bag count alone

Fourteen individual bags may suit a household planning several snack occasions, but they do not replace a nutrition comparison. Tesco lists 130 kcal, 7.8g fat and 0.30g salt per 25g bag of Walkers Ready Salted.

Match the count to your plans and read the values per bag before choosing the pack.

  • Reading “baked” or “hand-cooked” as a salt claim

Cooking method does not establish the salt content. Walkers lists 0.19g salt per 22g bag of Oven Baked Sea Salt, while KETTLE lists 0.7g salt per 100g of Lightly Salted chips; these are different serving and measurement bases.

Compare the exact flavours on the same per-100g basis, then check what each inner bag contains.

  • Checking only one flavour’s allergens

Flavours within a variety pack can have different ingredients. Asda’s Walkers Baked variety listing includes flavours with milk and cereal allergens.

Read the current ingredient and allergen information for every flavour that might be eaten.

  • Relying on an earlier retailer listing

Tesco marked its KETTLE Chips Variety Pack 5 x 30g listing out of stock when it was checked. A listing does not establish that the pack is available when you order.

Confirm the exact pack, flavour mix and stock status with the retailer before buying.

Relevant brand ranges

These examples show why it is worth comparing particular products and flavours rather than treating a brand’s whole range as one choice.

Walkers

Its multipack examples include conventional Ready Salted crisps and Oven Baked potato snacks.

  • Tesco lists the Ready Salted multipack as 14 x 25g, with 7.8g fat and 0.30g salt per bag.
  • Walkers lists 2.8g fat and 0.19g salt per 22g bag of Oven Baked Sea Salt. Baked variety flavours can have different allergens, so check each one.

Seabrook

Seabrook has conventional potato-crisp flavours as well as a six-pack variety listing at Tesco.

  • Seabrook labels its Sea Salted flavour gluten-free and suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
  • The brand lists 9.7g fat and 0.4g salt per 31.8g Sea Salted bag. Its Cheese & Onion flavour contains milk ingredients, so the Sea Salted dietary labels cannot be assumed for other flavours.

KETTLE Chips

A hand-cooked crisp range for shoppers considering a different texture or flavour mix.

  • KETTLE labels Lightly Salted gluten-free and suitable for vegans and vegetarians.
  • Lightly Salted lists 29.5g fat and 0.7g salt per 100g; hand-cooked does not itself establish lower values. Tesco marked its 5 x 30g variety pack out of stock when checked.

Tyrrells

The Tyrrells range includes potato crisps, lentil crisps and furrows crisps, which should not be treated as interchangeable products.

  • Tesco lists a Tyrrells variety multipack containing 5 x 25g bags.
  • Check the contents of the exact multipack if you specifically want potato crisps rather than another product from the wider range.

Pipers

Pipers offers hand-cooked potato crisps in flavours with distinct ingredient and nutrition profiles.

  • Pipers labels Anglesey Sea Salt gluten-free and suitable for vegetarians and vegans; it lists 0.94g salt per 100g.
  • Pipers lists 1.6g salt per 100g for Lye Cross Cheddar & Onion, which also contains milk. Check the chosen flavour rather than applying one flavour’s figures across the range.

REAL Hand Cooked Crisps

REAL’s Sea Salt potato crisps offer a plain salted example for ingredient and label comparisons.

  • REAL lists potatoes, vegetable oils and sea salt as ingredients and labels Sea Salt suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
  • Sea Salt lists 30.0g fat and 1.3g salt per 100g. Check the bag format when comparing it with individually portioned multipacks.

Common questions

Should crisps be the default after-school snack?

The NHS identifies crisps and salted nuts as salty foods to watch and cut back on. If crisps are part of an after-school routine, compare the salt per bag and consider other snacks the NHS mentions, such as fruit, vegetable sticks or plain rice cakes.

Does a smaller bag always contain less fat or salt?

No: check the product as well as the bag weight. Walkers lists 2.8g fat and 0.19g salt per 22g bag of Oven Baked Sea Salt, while Tesco lists 7.8g fat and 0.30g salt per 25g bag of Walkers Ready Salted. These figures describe those two products, not every baked or conventional flavour.

Can a variety multipack meet vegan, gluten-free or allergen requirements?

Check every flavour’s current label before choosing it. KETTLE Lightly Salted and Seabrook Sea Salted are labelled gluten-free and suitable for vegans, but those labels do not apply automatically to a variety pack; some Walkers Baked variety flavours contain milk or cereal allergens.

Do England’s school-food rules apply to snacks served at home after school?

The Department for Education’s school-food guidance concerns food and drink provided in state-funded schools in England, not snacks served at home. If the snack is for a school-run club or event, check that school’s requirements rather than assuming the home-snack arrangement applies there.
