Who is the buffet for?

Hosts serving a mixed Boxing Day crowd

Individually wrapped bags let guests choose a flavour without taking crisps from a shared bowl. Check both the number of bags and the flavours inside: a variety box can provide several choices, but not necessarily equal numbers of each.

Hosts accommodating allergies or dietary preferences

Choose by the label for each flavour, not the brand name alone. The products described by Iceland Foods, Waitrose & Partners and Tyrrells illustrate why: cheese-and-onion varieties and precautionary allergen statements need separate attention from a plain flavour.

Hosts planning a smaller gathering

A six-bag pack may make sense when crisps are one part of a wider spread; a case needs a different attendance plan. For scale, Waitrose & Partners lists a Seabrook variety pack of six 25g bags, Tesco lists a Walkers box of 22 25g bags, and REAL Hand Cooked Crisps lists 24 × 35g cases.

What should you check before buying?

Decide how many sealed portions you want to put out, then compare bag size, flavour mix and the labels guests will need to read.

Priority What to check Your needs
Bag count Count the individual bags, not just the total pack weight. Compare that count with likely attendance and the other buffet food. I want guests to be able to take a sealed bag without assuming everyone will take exactly one.
Bag size Check grams per bag as well as bag count. Tesco lists 25g bags in its Walkers variety box; REAL Hand Cooked Crisps lists 35g bags in its cases, while Tyrrells identifies its 40g Lightly Sea Salted pack as one serving. Crisps might be a small extra on my buffet, or I might want each bag to be a more substantial portion.
Flavours Read the breakdown rather than assuming each flavour appears equally often. Iceland Foods lists six ready salted, six cheese & onion, five salt & vinegar and five prawn cocktail bags in its 22-bag Walkers box. If guests have different tastes, I want enough of the flavours they can choose from—not merely a variety-pack label.
Ingredients and allergens Check every flavour and any precautionary statements on the current packaging. GOV.UK and Food Standards Agency guidance says allergens used as ingredients must be emphasised in the ingredients list on prepacked food. Guests need to identify a bag that meets their requirements; I cannot assume a plain flavour or another product from the same brand is suitable.
Nutrition per bag Compare the nutrition information per bag or serving alongside any per 100g figures. Check flavours separately where their labels differ, particularly if guests may take more than one bag. I want to know what one individual bag contains, rather than treating every portion in a mixed pack as identical.

Common buying mistakes

  • Choosing by total weight alone

The same total weight does not tell you how many people can each pick up a sealed bag. Tesco’s Walkers 550g variety box contains 22 25g bags, while Waitrose & Partners lists six 25g bags in its 150g Seabrook variety pack.

Plan with the bag count first, then use grams per bag to decide whether each portion fits the role crisps will play in the buffet.

  • Assuming every flavour has the same allergen information

Ingredients and precautionary statements can differ across a mixed pack. For example, Iceland Foods flags milk in its Walkers variety box, and Tyrrells states that its Lightly Sea Salted crisps may contain milk.

Check each flavour’s current label and keep its labelled bag or outer packaging available so guests can identify what they are taking.

  • Applying one flavour’s dietary label to a whole brand

Ocado labels the specific KETTLE Chips Lightly Salted product gluten free and suitable for vegans. That description does not establish the ingredients or suitability of other KETTLE flavours.

Match any dietary statement to the exact flavour and pack you intend to serve, then check its current packaging.

Brand and product-line references

These examples show different pack formats and flavour choices; a statement about one listed product should not be applied to every product from its brand.

Walkers

Tesco lists a Classic Variety box containing 22 individual 25g bags, a format to consider when many guests will choose their own bag.

  • Iceland Foods specifies the flavour split: ready salted, cheese & onion, salt & vinegar and prawn cocktail.
  • Its listing flags allergens for the box; check the current information for each flavour before serving.

Tyrrells

Tyrrells lists its Lightly Sea Salted crisps in 40g, 150g and 600g formats; the 40g pack is described as one serving.

  • The brand lists potatoes, sunflower oil and sea salt as ingredients for this flavour.
  • Its Lightly Sea Salted page also says “May contain Milk”; a short ingredient list does not remove the need to read allergy advice.

KETTLE Chips

Ocado describes the specific KETTLE Chips Lightly Salted multipack as hand cooked, gluten free and suitable for vegans.

  • The listed ingredients for that product are potatoes, vegetable oils and sea salt.
  • Those ingredients and dietary statements belong to the Lightly Salted listing, not every KETTLE flavour.

Seabrook

Waitrose & Partners lists a six-bag, 6 × 25g variety pack that could supplement a small buffet spread.

  • The listing identifies sea salted, sea salt & vinegar, and cheese & onion choices.
  • Dietary information differs by flavour; check each bag rather than treating the variety pack as a single recipe.

Pipers

Pipers describes a range built around distinct seasoned flavours, which may suit a buffet where the flavour selection matters more than a high bag count.

  • Its range includes Lye Cross Cheddar & Onion, made with cheddar according to Pipers.
  • Check the selected flavour’s ingredients, dietary statements and pack format individually.

REAL Hand Cooked Crisps

REAL’s official shop lists 24 × 35g cases, including a mixed box, for hosts planning around larger individual bags.

  • A stated case size makes it straightforward to compare the number and size of sealed portions.
  • Check the flavours chosen for a mixed box separately; information for its sea-salt product does not establish the ingredients of the other flavours.

Questions about crisp multipacks

How many bags should I get for a Boxing Day buffet?

Start with the number of guests likely to eat crisps and whether crisps are a small extra or a more substantial part of the spread. Compare individual bag counts rather than pack weight alone: Tesco lists 22 × 25g bags in a Walkers variety box, Waitrose & Partners lists six × 25g bags in a Seabrook pack, and REAL Hand Cooked Crisps lists 24 × 35g cases. None of those counts sets a fixed number of bags per guest.

Is every flavour in a variety pack suitable for a guest with allergies?

No—check each flavour’s current ingredients and precautionary statements. GOV.UK and Food Standards Agency guidance says prepacked food must carry an ingredients list with allergens used as ingredients emphasised; keep the labelled bags or outer packaging available for guests to read.

Should I add a plain or lightly salted option?

It can give guests another flavour choice when the rest of the selection is heavily seasoned. Do not treat plain seasoning as an allergen guarantee: Tyrrells says its Lightly Sea Salted product may contain milk, while Ocado’s vegan and gluten-free statements apply to the specific KETTLE Chips Lightly Salted product it lists. Check the exact pack you buy.

Can I use a retailer listing to check allergens before serving?

Use the listing to narrow down options, then read the packaging on the product you have. Tesco cautions that food ingredients, nutrition and allergen information can change, so a previously viewed listing should not replace the current label.
