Who is each format for?
The useful distinction for a New Year's Eve party is how guests will serve themselves, not simply how large the outer pack looks.
Hosts offering sealed portions
Individual bags let guests take a portion without using a serving bowl. The formats listed by Tesco Groceries, ASDA Groceries and REAL Hand Cooked Crisps include packs of 20, 12 and 24 bags respectively; check the inner-bag weight as well as the count.
Hosts putting out sharing bowls
Larger bags make sense when guests will help themselves from bowls rather than take one pack each. KETTLE Chips lists a selection box of eight 130g sharing bags, which is a different serving format from an individual-bag multipack.
Hosts checking guests' dietary needs
An assorted box needs a flavour-by-flavour label check before serving. ASDA Groceries lists milk in the allergen information for its Seabrook Variety Pack; do not assume every bag in a mixed pack has the same ingredients or dietary declaration.
What should you check before buying?
Decide whether guests will take sealed bags or share from bowls. Then compare the portion count and flavour mix within that format.
| Priority | What to check | Your needs |
| Serving format |
Count the inner bags and read their stated weight. Distinguish bags intended as individual portions from larger sharing bags. |
I'd rather let guests pick up sealed bags than refill bowls. If I'm setting out a buffet, larger bags may fit the way I plan to serve. |
| Flavour mix |
Read the flavour breakdown and how many bags of each are included. For a selectable mixed case, check which flavours you can choose. |
Guests should have alternatives, but I don't want to assume that a pack labelled variety contains an even mix. |
| Ingredients and allergens |
Check the current ingredient list, allergen declaration and any precautionary statements for each flavour. Apply vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free wording only to the products it identifies. |
Before serving anyone with a dietary requirement or allergy, I want the relevant packaging available so they can check the exact flavour. |
| Pack comparison |
Compare the number of bags, grams per bag and total stated weight. If nutrition matters to your comparison, use the same basis on the labels, such as per 100g or per serving. |
A large outer box might contain more bags, larger bags or both. I need to know which difference matters for my guest list. |
Brand and pack references
These examples illustrate different pack formats; a brand name alone does not tell you the portion count, flavour mix or ingredients of the pack you buy.
Walkers
An individual-bag variety example: Tesco Groceries lists Walkers Classic Variety as 20 × 25g.
- Tesco Groceries specifies five bags each of Ready Salted, Cheese & Onion, Salt & Vinegar and Prawn Cocktail.
- Check the label of the particular Walkers pack you choose rather than applying this flavour breakdown to another variety.
KETTLE Chips
A sharing-bag example: KETTLE Chips lists a selection box containing eight 130g bags.
- The larger inner bags suit serving from bowls rather than handing out one small bag per guest.
- Check the ingredients and dietary wording for each included flavour before serving.
Seabrook
An individual-bag variety example: ASDA Groceries lists a Seabrook pack of 12 × 25g.
- The 12-bag format gives hosts a stated count to compare with the number of guests.
- ASDA Groceries identifies milk in the pack's allergen information; check the current declaration for each flavour being served.
McCoy's
A smaller individual-bag option: Ocado describes its Classic Variety pack as six bags.
- Ocado lists two bags each of Salt & Malt Vinegar, Salted and Cheddar & Onion.
- Six bags may need to be supplemented if you intend to offer an individual pack to more than six guests.
Tyrrells
Tyrrells identifies 150g sharing packs, a format to consider for bowls rather than individually sealed portions.
- The stated sharing-pack weight makes it possible to compare quantities with other large-bag options.
- Tyrrells says its packet film cannot currently go in normal domestic recycling.
REAL Hand Cooked Crisps
A mixed-case example: REAL Hand Cooked Crisps lists 24 × 35g bags, selectable from nine flavours.
- The stated selection offers a way to plan a larger set of individual bags around preferred flavours.
- The brand directs shoppers to individual flavour packs for allergen information; check those details before ordering.

Questions about party crisp multipacks
How do I compare a small-bag multipack with sharing bags?
Start with how guests will serve themselves: count individual bags if you want sealed portions, or compare the weight and number of larger bags if you will fill bowls. Also check total stated weight and the flavour mix. For example, Tesco Groceries lists Walkers Classic Variety as 20 × 25g, while KETTLE Chips lists eight 130g sharing bags; those counts serve different purposes.
What should I check for guests with allergies?
Read the current ingredient and allergen information for every flavour you intend to serve, and keep the packaging available. ASDA Groceries identifies milk in its Seabrook Variety Pack's allergen information, illustrating why a mixed pack needs more than a glance at its front label.
Does a dietary claim cover every flavour in a mixed pack?
Check exactly which pack or flavours the claim describes before applying it to an assortment. REAL Hand Cooked Crisps makes a range-level vegetarian and gluten-free statement but directs shoppers to individual flavour packs for allergen details; those details still matter for the bags you serve.
Do England's HFSS rules prevent crisps being served at a private party?
No. The Department of Health & Social Care describes the relevant England HFSS rules as restrictions on the promotion and placement of certain products by retailers, not a ban on serving food at home. Whether a particular pack meets an HFSS classification cannot be decided from the word 'crisps' alone.
Do school food standards apply to a New Year's Eve party at home?
No. The Department for Education identifies compliance with school food standards as a legal requirement for state-funded schools; that is a separate setting from a private party at home. For your guests, concentrate on the serving format and the current labels of the products you choose.
