Who is each format for?

Hosts setting out a buffet

Decide whether guests will take sealed bags or share crisps from bowls. Bag count matters for individual portions; total weight helps you judge how much food the pack contains.

Hosts catering for dietary needs

Check each flavour's current ingredients and allergen statement. A claim on one product does not establish that every flavour in a brand's range suits the same guest.

Hosts choosing the flavour mix

A configurable case can avoid a fixed assortment. Check how many packs you must select: REAL Hand Cooked Crisps says it chooses the mix if its 24-pack selection is not completed as required.

What should you check before buying?

Individual multipack

Choose when: Guests will pick up their own sealed portions during the party.

Trade-off: The flavour mix is fixed, and many small bags may contain less food than their count suggests.

Sharing bags

Choose when: You will put out bowls and open more bags as needed.

Trade-off: Guests do not get individually sealed portions, and you need to check every included flavour's label.

Configurable case

Choose when: You know which flavours the group wants and need control over the assortment.

Trade-off: For REAL's mixed box, selecting other than exactly 24 packs means the seller chooses the mix based on its popular flavours.

Priority What to check Your needs
Portions and quantity Multiply the number of bags by the weight of each bag. Tesco's Walkers Classic Variety listing, for example, specifies 20 × 25g: 500g in total. Decide whether the bags will be taken individually or emptied into bowls. I'm setting out a buffet, so I want enough individual portions—or enough total crisps for the bowls I plan to refill.
Flavour mix Check the named flavours and how many bags of each are included. For a configurable case, read the rules for completing your selection before ordering. A fixed assortment works if my guests are happy with its flavours; otherwise, I want to choose the mix myself.
Ingredients and allergens Read the current ingredients, allergen advice and dietary labels for each exact flavour. Tyrrells says its Naked (no salt) crisps may contain milk, despite listing only potatoes and sunflower oil as ingredients. If a guest has an allergy or dietary requirement, I need a clearly labelled option they can assess for themselves.
Seasoning and nutrition Compare nutrition information on the same basis, such as per 100g or per serving, and note the stated serving size. Do not use a flavour name alone to judge salt content. Someone may prefer an unseasoned option, so I'll check its label rather than assume all plain-sounding crisps are alike.

What is easy to overlook?

  • Counting bags instead of grams

Twenty small bags are twenty portions, but their combined weight may differ substantially from a box of sharing bags.

Calculate the total weight from the pack label, then decide whether portion count or food for shared bowls matters more at your party.

  • Assuming a mixed box suits every dietary need

Different flavours can have different ingredients. Tyrrells also advises that its Naked (no salt) crisps may contain milk, although its ingredient list names only potatoes and sunflower oil.

Check every flavour you will serve and keep its packaging available so guests can read the current allergen advice.

  • Leaving a configurable order incomplete

REAL Hand Cooked Crisps says it will select popular flavours if the number chosen for its mixed box is not exactly 24 packs.

Choose exactly 24 packs and review the flavour quantities before submitting the order.

Which brands offer relevant options?

Walkers

Walkers offers familiar flavours in individual multipacks, a format for guests helping themselves.

  • Tesco lists a Walkers Classic Variety Multipack containing 20 × 25g bags.
  • Check the current pack for its exact flavour selection and each flavour's allergen advice.

KETTLE Chips

KETTLE offers sharing-bag boxes for a spread served in bowls.

  • KETTLE describes its Originals Box as containing eight sharing packs.
  • Check the included flavours separately for dietary needs; the box's gluten-free label does not settle whether a flavour contains milk.

Tyrrells

Tyrrells offers hand-cooked potato crisps, including an unseasoned option that could sit alongside a multipack.

  • Tyrrells lists potatoes and sunflower oil as the ingredients in Naked (no salt).
  • That product also says it may contain milk; its short ingredient list is not an allergen clearance.

Seabrook

Seabrook has both plain and seasoned crisp flavours to consider for a mixed spread.

  • Seabrook labels its Sea Salted product gluten free and suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
  • Those labels apply to that product, not automatically to other Seabrook flavours.

Pipers

Pipers describes a range of distinctly seasoned crisps for hosts considering additional flavours.

  • The brand describes a Sweet Chili flavour among its products.
  • Check the pack format, ingredients and allergen advice for the flavour you choose.

REAL Hand Cooked Crisps

REAL offers a configurable mixed box for hosts who want to specify individual-pack flavours.

  • The mixed box contains 24 × 35g packs, according to REAL's shop listing.
  • REAL says it selects the assortment if the customer does not choose exactly 24 packs.

Frequently asked questions

Should I buy individual bags or sharing bags for a New Year's Eve party?

Choose individual bags if guests will help themselves to sealed portions, or sharing bags if you will serve bowls and open more as needed. Compare total weight as well as bag count: Tesco lists its Walkers Classic Variety Multipack as 20 × 25g, or 500g in total.

Does a dietary label on a mixed box cover every guest's needs?

No single label settles every requirement. Check each included flavour's current ingredients and allergen statement: a gluten-free label, for example, does not establish that a flavour is suitable for someone with a milk allergy.

What should I do with unopened bags and leftovers?

Keep unopened bags sealed and follow their storage and best-before information. For crisps left in an opened sharing bag, check the product's storage instructions and close the bag or use an airtight container to help preserve its quality.
