Who is serving the crisps?

Hosts offering one bag per guest

An unopened bag gives each guest a labelled portion. Check its kcal and bag weight rather than assuming all small bags contain the same amount.

Hosts serving sharing bowls

Compare crisps per 100g, then decide how much to put out. The weight of a sharing bag does not tell you how much any one guest will eat.

Hosts accommodating food restrictions

Keep the packaging available so guests can check ingredients and allergen advice for the exact flavour they choose. Do not assume every flavour in a multipack has the same information.

What should you compare?

Start with the amount you plan to offer each guest, then compare energy on the same weight basis. Treat salt and allergen information as separate checks.

PriorityWhat to checkYour needs
Calories per portion For unopened bags, read kcal per bag and its weight. For bowls, use kcal per 100g and the weight you intend to serve. Walkers lists 96 kcal per 22g serving for Oven Baked Sea Salt; Tyrrells lists 140–141 kcal per 30g for two lentil flavours. I want guests to see the calories in the portion they are offered, whether that is a whole bag or a measured amount from a bowl.
Product claims Read what a reduced-fat claim compares, then check kcal per 100g for the exact flavour. A flavour called Lightly Salted does not, by its name, establish its calorie content. If I choose baked or lentil crisps, I still want to compare their labelled energy rather than judge them by the cooking method or ingredient alone.
Salt Compare salt for the amount being served, as well as per 100g when comparing products. Tyrrells lists 0.60–0.63g per 30g across its two specified lentil flavours. Calories are not my only label check; I want to know the salt amount for the flavour and portion on offer.
Allergens Check the current ingredients and precautionary allergen statement for every flavour. The Joybuy listing for Walkers Squares Variety identifies milk in Cheese & Onion. Guests need to be able to identify their flavour and read its own packaging, particularly if I am offering a mixed multipack.

What can make comparisons misleading?

  • Calling a small bag a low-calorie crisp

A bag’s kcal figure describes that portion; it does not tell you how the product compares per 100g. The NHS explains that food labels can show energy for a portion and per 100g.

Use the bag figure to plan individual portions and the per-100g figure to compare products at equal weight.

  • Reading “less fat” or “lightly salted” as a calorie ranking

Walkers’ and Tyrrells’ reduced-fat statements use specified fat comparisons, not a comparison of calories across all crisps. Kettle Chips lists 516 kcal per 100g for its Lightly Salted flavour.

Check kcal and salt for the exact product, then account for the weight you plan to serve.

  • Pouring mixed flavours into an unlabelled bowl

The listed Walkers Squares Variety multipack identifies milk in Cheese & Onion. Once flavours are mixed or packaging is discarded, guests cannot readily check the label for what they take.

Keep flavours identifiable and their original packaging available.

Brand and product-line references

These published examples help illustrate different bag sizes and sharing formats; the figures apply to the named flavours, not every product from each brand.

Walkers

A reference for individually labelled portions.

  • Walkers lists Oven Baked Sea Salt at 96 kcal per 22g serving and 438 kcal per 100g.
  • Its “50% less fat” statement concerns fat, not a 50% calorie reduction. Check allergen advice for the particular flavour.

Tyrrells

A lentil-crisp reference with published 30g serving figures.

  • Tyrrells lists 140–141 kcal and 0.60–0.63g salt per 30g across its Sweet Chilli & Red Pepper and Sour Cream & Onion lentil flavours.
  • Its 30%-less-fat comparison uses a March 2021 standard potato-crisp comparator; it is not a current calorie ranking of all crisps.

Kettle Chips

A sharing-bag reference for hosts who will decide portions themselves.

  • Kettle Chips lists Lightly Salted at 516 kcal and 0.7g salt per 100g.
  • The flavour name does not specify calories per guest; that depends on the amount served.

Seabrook

A crinkle-cut example with both bag and per-100g figures.

  • Seabrook lists Beefy at 160 kcal per 31.8g bag and 504 kcal per 100g.
  • Those figures and the brand’s stated vegetarian and vegan suitability describe Beefy, not every Seabrook flavour.

McCoy's

A potato-crisp reference when comparing what to put in sharing bowls.

  • McCoy's lists Salted at 533 kcal and 1.3g salt per 100g.
  • A per-100g figure does not establish the amount each guest will take.

REAL Crisps

A hand-cooked potato-crisp reference for a sharing selection.

  • REAL lists Sea Salt & Black Pepper at 495 kcal and 1.12g salt per 100g.
  • Use the label for any other flavour rather than applying these figures across the range.

Lay's Original, Cucumber & Lime, 3 × 90g Cans

Wei Long Spicy Vegetarian Tripe-Style Konjac Crisps, 20 × 18g

Questions about choosing and serving crisps

How do I compare a 22g bag with a 30g serving?

Compare their kcal per 100g to put the products on an equal-weight basis, then use the kcal for each actual bag or serving when planning what to offer. NHS food-label guidance explains the distinction between portion and per-100g information.

Do reduced-fat or lentil crisps necessarily contain fewer calories?

No conclusion about calories follows from either description alone. Walkers’ reduced-fat statement for Oven Baked Sea Salt and Tyrrells’ statement for its specified lentil crisps concern fat and particular comparators; compare the labelled kcal at equal weight and check salt separately.

What should I do when guests need allergen information?

Keep the current packaging available and check each flavour individually. Walkers’ Oven Baked Sea Salt information includes a “may contain” warning, while the listed Squares Variety multipack identifies milk in Cheese & Onion; neither label establishes the ingredients of other products.

Do unopened crisps need preparation before the party?

The Joybuy listing for Walkers Oven Baked Sea Salt describes that product as ready to eat and says to keep unopened packs in a cool, dry place. Follow the storage instructions and best-before date on the packs you receive.
