Who this setup suits

Script-and-call multitaskers

If you keep notes or a script beside a live call, you need to read one screen without moving the call screen out of a useful position. Look at how each display can be angled and adjusted, not just whether the stand holds two monitors.

Small-desk home-office users

If desk surface is scarce, compare a desktop stand’s footprint with the space and mounting position needed for a clamped arm. Allow room for both monitor widths and for cables behind them.

Owners of larger or heavier monitors

If either display is heavy, compare its weight with the mount’s stated range for each monitor. A screen-size claim alone cannot establish that the arm will support it.

What to check before buying

Start with monitor and desk compatibility, then decide whether you need frequent independent movement or a mostly fixed side-by-side layout. For viewing position, the Health and Safety Executive advises placing the top of a screen around eye level and the screen about an arm’s length away; the rest of the workstation matters too.

Concern What to check Who this matters to
Monitor and desk fit Match each display’s weight and mounting pattern to the exact stand or arm. For a clamp or grommet mount, check the desk’s thickness and unobstructed mounting space. If my monitors or desk are awkward to mount, I need to establish that both screens and the mount will fit before planning their layout. Around 29% of consumers put compatibility first.
Script-and-call viewing position Check the available height, tilt and side-to-side adjustment against your seated eye height and desk depth. When I read a script during a call, I want the text close to the call screen without repeatedly turning or lowering my head. A comfortable viewing position comes first for around 29% of consumers.
Independent movement Look at each screen’s stated movement range and, for an adjustable arm, how its tension is set for the installed display. If I change screen positions between calls and other work, I need to move one display without shifting the other. Around 24% of consumers place that flexibility first.
Desk space and cables Measure the stand’s footprint or the arm’s mounting clearance, and check cable routes and access to rear ports. On a crowded desk, I want two usable screens without cables snagging or blocking their connections. Keeping space and cables manageable is the first concern for around 18% of consumers.

Common fitting and setup mistakes

  • Choosing by screen size alone

A monitor can fall within an arm’s stated size range but exceed its permitted load; some arms also specify a minimum weight.

Check the manufacturer-stated weight of each display against the exact arm’s per-monitor range. Do not substitute a combined capacity for individual limits.

  • Assuming any desk edge will take a clamp

Desk thickness and rear-edge obstructions can prevent the clamp from fitting. Desk construction also matters to a secure installation.

Measure the clear mounting area and compare it with the chosen model’s instructions. Ergotron specifies a 1–6.6 cm desk-edge range for the HX clamp; that range should not be assumed for other mounts.

  • Expecting a monitor arm to fix the whole workstation

Moving the screens does not by itself address chair support, keyboard position, glare or a layout that makes you twist to read.

Position the screen you use most directly in front of you, keep the other close beside it and check the complete seated setup. The Health and Safety Executive’s display-screen guidance addresses viewing height and distance as part of that wider arrangement.

  • Leaving cable movement until last

Cables can catch when an arm moves, while a fixed side-by-side layout can make rear connections harder to reach.

Before final tightening, move the screens through the positions you intend to use and check cable slack and access to video, USB and power connections.

Relevant brands to consider

Ergotron

Ergotron offers dual articulated arms including the LX Pro and higher-capacity HX. Their published limits apply to the specified models, not every Ergotron arm.

  • Ergotron specifies up to 8.5 kg per display and 33 cm of lift for the LX Pro Desk Dual Direct Arm.
  • The HX Desk Dual Monitor Arm has a stated range of 4.5–15.9 kg per display, so its higher maximum does not make it suitable for every lighter screen.

Fellowes

Fellowes offers Eppa and Tallo monitor-arm ranges with dual configurations; Tallo includes a slider arrangement for aligning multiple screens.

  • Fellowes states a 1–9 kg screen range for Tallo and a 1–8 kg range for Eppa.
  • Check the exact dual configuration for its mounting method and movement before applying range-level specifications to your desk.

Humanscale

Humanscale’s M/Flex range includes a UK-listed configuration combining two M2.1 arms with a dual bracket and clamp base.

  • Humanscale states that this configuration accommodates two monitors up to 7 kg each.
  • Confirm the components and monitor limits of the particular M/Flex configuration you intend to order.

Joybuy products for this setup

This dual desktop stand offers a way to keep a script and call on separate screens. Check its fit and adjustment against your desk before choosing it instead of a clamped arm.

DELL Pro Dual Monitor Stand MDS19

DELL Pro Dual Monitor Stand MDS19

Consider this desktop stand if you want a script and call visible on separate monitors without fitting a clamp to the desk.

Before ordering, check each monitor against the stated 6 kg limit and confirm its mounting fit. Check the stand’s actual height-adjustment range for your seated position, and use a stable desk surface capable of supporting the complete setup.

Questions about dual monitor stands

Where should the script screen go beside a video call?

Keep the screen you look at most often more central and place the other close beside it, rather than at an extreme angle. The Health and Safety Executive advises a screen top around eye level and a viewing distance of about an arm’s length; adjust the complete workstation so reading does not require repeated twisting.

Will a dual monitor arm fit screens without VESA holes?

Do not assume direct attachment will work without mounting holes matching the arm’s specified VESA pattern. For a proprietary mount or a screen without VESA holes, check whether an adapter is compatible with that exact monitor and arm before ordering.

Is monitor size enough to choose an arm?

No. Check both the stated screen-size range and the weight range for each display: a screen can meet the size limit but exceed the load limit, and some adjustable arms also have a minimum supported weight.

Does a home workstation need a DSE assessment?

For workers using display screen equipment daily as part of normal work, continuously for an hour or more, the UK Health and Safety Executive states that employers must carry out a workstation assessment. It covers the whole workstation, the job and individual requirements; fitting a monitor arm does not replace that assessment.

What should I check after fitting a gas-spring dual arm?

Set its tension for the installed monitors according to the arm’s instructions, then move each screen through the positions you plan to use. Check cable slack and port access, and revisit the adjustment if you replace a monitor with one of a different weight.
