What should you check before buying?
Choose the connection route only after you know your laptop’s exact model, the number of independent screens required and the resolution and refresh rate you intend to use.
Direct monitor connection
Choose it when: Your laptop’s documented video output supports the additional monitor you want.
Trade-off: A direct display connection does not also add charging and desk-peripheral ports.
USB-C or Thunderbolt dock
Choose it when: A regular desk setup needs displays, charging and peripherals connected together.
Trade-off: Its display modes and charging output depend on the dock and host laptop; extra sockets alone do not raise the laptop’s documented native-display limit.
USB graphics adapter or dock
Choose it when: Native display output is insufficient and a specific driver-based device supports your operating system and intended work.
Trade-off: USB graphics is not the same connection as native video and may require a driver.
Laptop replacement
Choose it when: The current laptop’s documented capabilities cannot meet the required display setup through a suitable connection.
Trade-off: Moving computers also means moving files and setting up work software; the replacement model’s display limits still need checking.

Buying checks |
Who this matters to |
| Independent display support |
Check the exact laptop model’s supported external-display count and video-capable ports against your planned screens, resolution and refresh rate. |
If I need several applications open across separate screens, I need to know that my laptop can run that arrangement before choosing accessories. Around 33% of consumers put display capability first. |
| One-cable desk connection |
Match the dock’s host protocol and charging output to the laptop, then check its supported display combinations. |
At a regular desk, I want charging and peripherals connected alongside my screens without discovering that the laptop still needs its own charger. For around 42% of consumers, this is the primary need. |
| USB graphics compatibility |
Confirm the device’s operating-system and driver requirements, and its stated display-count and output limits. |
When native outputs cannot provide the extra workspace I need, I would consider USB graphics only if my work software and computer support that route. It comes first for around 17% of consumers. |
| Need to replace the laptop |
Compare the current and proposed models’ official external-display specifications for the exact configuration you need. |
If my current computer cannot meet the required display arrangement, I need a replacement whose own specifications cover it rather than another uncertain accessory. Around 8% of consumers make replacement their primary concern. |

Frequently asked questions
Should I extend or mirror a monitor for several work applications?
Extend the desktop if you want different applications visible on separate screens. Mirroring duplicates the image instead; Microsoft Support directs Windows users to the Extend setting when configuring an external display for separate workspace.
Will any USB-C dock add monitor outputs to my laptop?
No: the USB-C connector alone does not establish video support. Match the laptop port to the dock’s required technology, such as DisplayPort Alt Mode, Thunderbolt or a supported USB graphics implementation, then check the exact laptop and dock display limits. Lenovo and Anker both set out host requirements for their respective products.
Can a hub increase the number of external displays my Mac supports?
A hub does not, by itself, increase a Mac’s documented maximum. Apple Support says a supported hub or daisy-chain arrangement can connect displays over one Thunderbolt port without raising that maximum; check the specifications for your exact Mac model and planned display modes.
Does working from home mean I need to buy a particular monitor or dock?
No particular monitor or dock follows from home working alone. The UK Health and Safety Executive says Display Screen Equipment Regulations can apply to permanent or long-term home workers; workplace assessment is a separate question from whether a specific accessory works with your laptop.
