Who is buying?

Organisers sharing chocolate bars

For an office, event, school or community group, an identifiable Fairtrade mark is only part of the order. Check the number of bars and keep the ingredient and allergen information available for the people receiving them.

Buyers with a strict Fairtrade requirement

If an order specification calls for Fairtrade, distinguish the classic FAIRTRADE Mark from a mark covering a named ingredient. A brand’s separate cocoa-sourcing programme does not, by itself, meet that specification.

Groups choosing mixed flavours

An assortment can offer different flavours, but check the certification and allergen information for each included variant. Also confirm the bar count and size rather than assuming that packs with similar names contain the same products.

What should you check?

Set the certification requirement before choosing a format. The Fairtrade Foundation distinguishes a classic FAIRTRADE Mark, which covers all certifiable ingredients, from a Fairtrade Sourced Ingredient mark, which names the ingredient covered.

Classic FAIRTRADE Mark

Choose when: The order requires every ingredient that can be Fairtrade-certified to be certified.

Still check: The mark on the exact bar, plus its flavour, allergens and order quantity.

Fairtrade Sourced Ingredient mark

Choose when: Fairtrade-sourced cocoa specifically meets the order requirement and cocoa is the ingredient named by the mark.

Trade-off: The mark does not say that every other certifiable ingredient is Fairtrade-sourced.

Other cocoa-sourcing programmes

Consider when: The buyer accepts a named programme other than Fairtrade certification.

Trade-off: Cocoa Life and Rainforest Alliance claims do not establish that the exact bar carries a FAIRTRADE Mark.

PriorityWhat to checkYour needs
Certification Find the mark on the exact pack. For an ingredient-specific mark, read which ingredient it names; do not infer the mark from the brand name. I need the bars to meet a stated Fairtrade requirement, not simply carry a broader ethical-sourcing message.
Order format Check the bar count, weight per bar and included flavours. Tony’s Chocolonely UK lists a Rainbow 6 Pack of six 180g bars; a differently named assortment need not contain the same bars. There must be enough bars to distribute, and I want to know whether everyone will receive the same variant.
Ingredients and allergens Read the current label and any variant-specific ingredient and allergen declarations. An assortment can contain different allergens across its flavours. People receiving the bars need information for the particular chocolate they are offered, not just a description of the outer pack.
Sourcing claim Identify the programme named for the exact product. Cadbury describes Cocoa Life sourcing for Dairy Milk; Galaxy describes Rainforest Alliance-certified cocoa under mass balance for Smooth Milk; Nestlé UK & Ireland announced KitKat’s move to Rainforest Alliance-certified cocoa from October 2020. If I can accept another sourcing programme, I still want to know what it claims. If Fairtrade is required, I need to check the product’s Fairtrade mark separately.

Common ordering mistakes

  • Assuming every ethical cocoa claim means Fairtrade

The Fairtrade Foundation defines its marks by ingredient coverage. Cadbury’s Cocoa Life, Galaxy’s Rainforest Alliance-linked cocoa sourcing and KitKat’s announced Rainforest Alliance sourcing describe different programmes, so their names alone cannot establish a Fairtrade mark on a bar.

If certification is a condition of the order, specify which FAIRTRADE Mark is acceptable and check the exact product before placing the order.

  • Treating similarly named assortments as the same pack

Tony’s Chocolonely UK lists its Rainbow 6 Pack as six 180g bars, whereas a separate Joybuy Rainbow Tasting Pack is described as 288g. The formats cannot be treated as interchangeable when counting recipients or checking variants.

Compare the stated bar count, net weight, flavours and allergen information for the particular pack you intend to order.

  • Checking only the outer assortment description

Different chocolates in a mixed pack can have different allergen declarations. The Joybuy description of a Tony’s tasting pack, for example, identifies milk and soya and lists additional allergens for particular variants.

Check each variant’s current label and keep its ingredient information available when distributing the bars.

Brand references for this choice

These brand-level examples help distinguish certification and sourcing claims; check the exact bar or bundle before applying any claim to an order.

Divine Chocolate

An option to investigate when looking for Fairtrade chocolate in a selectable bundle.

  • Divine says it is farmer co-owned and offers build-your-own bundles alongside 90g bars.
  • Confirm the selected bars, bundle quantity, Fairtrade mark and allergens for the actual order.

Tony’s Chocolonely

A brand with a stated Fairtrade-certified bar range and a defined multi-bar option.

  • Tony’s Chocolonely UK describes its 180g bars as Fairtrade-certified and lists a Rainbow 6 Pack containing six 180g bars.
  • Check which variants are in the chosen pack and read their individual allergen information.

Cadbury

Relevant when comparing familiar bars with a Fairtrade-specific purchasing requirement.

  • Cocoa Life describes Cadbury Dairy Milk cocoa as sourced through its programme.
  • That programme description does not establish a FAIRTRADE Mark on a particular Cadbury bar.

Galaxy

A separate cocoa-sourcing example for buyers comparing the meanings of ethical claims.

  • Galaxy describes cocoa for Smooth Milk as sourced from Rainforest Alliance-certified farms under mass balance.
  • Galaxy explains that certified and non-certified cocoa may mix under this system; the statement does not establish a FAIRTRADE Mark on the bar.

KitKat

A reminder to check current pack claims rather than rely on a brand’s earlier Fairtrade association.

  • Nestlé UK & Ireland announced in June 2020 that KitKat would source Rainforest Alliance-certified cocoa from October 2020 as its Fairtrade partnership ended.
  • Check the certification stated on the exact pack if the order requires Fairtrade.

Chocolate bars on Joybuy

These are individual Tony’s Chocolonely and Divine bars with Fairtrade wording in their product names or descriptions, rather than confirmed bulk cases. Check the current pack’s mark, the quantity you can order, allergens and availability before using any of them for a Fairtrade-specific group order.

Tony's Chocolonely Fairtrade Milk Chocolate Caramel Sea Salt 180g bar

Tony’s Chocolonely Fairtrade Milk Chocolate Caramel Sea Salt 180g

A 180g bar to consider when selecting individual chocolates for a larger order. Check the exact FAIRTRADE Mark and the number of bars you can order; the individual-bar listing does not establish a case quantity.

Tony's Chocolonely Milk Chocolate, Pretzel & Toffee 180g bar

Tony’s Chocolonely Milk Chocolate, Pretzel & Toffee 180g

This 180g bar offers a different flavour for an order of individual bars. Its product information names Fairtrade ingredients, but check the current pack’s exact mark, allergens and order quantity before treating it as suitable for a specified bulk purchase.

Divine Chocolate 70% Dark Chocolate with Raspberries 90g bar

Divine Chocolate 70% Dark Chocolate with Raspberries 90g

A 90g dark chocolate bar described as Fairtrade-certified in its product information. Check the exact pack mark and order quantity. Read the current ingredient and allergen label before distributing it, particularly because the product information’s dietary wording and milk declaration need checking against the pack.

Frequently asked questions

How can I check whether a bulk order meets a Fairtrade requirement?

Check the mark on each exact product. The Fairtrade Foundation says the classic FAIRTRADE Mark covers all ingredients that can be Fairtrade-certified; a Fairtrade Sourced Ingredient mark names the ingredient it covers, such as cocoa. Match that distinction to the wording of your order requirement.

Do Cocoa Life and Rainforest Alliance claims count as Fairtrade certification?

No: they identify different sourcing programmes, not a FAIRTRADE Mark on the particular bar. Cocoa Life describes its programme for Cadbury Dairy Milk cocoa, Galaxy describes Rainforest Alliance-certified cocoa for Smooth Milk under mass balance, and Nestlé UK & Ireland announced KitKat’s move to Rainforest Alliance-certified cocoa from October 2020.

What should I check before handing out an assorted pack?

Check the ingredients and allergens for every included variant, as well as the bar count and sizes. The Joybuy description of a Tony’s tasting pack, for example, identifies milk and soya and lists additional allergens for some variants; do not assume one flavour’s declaration covers the whole assortment.

How should I store chocolate bars before an event?

Follow the storage instructions on the exact pack you buy. For example, the Joybuy description of a Tony’s tasting pack says to keep it in a cool, dark, dry place and not in the refrigerator; check other products’ instructions separately.
