Hosts planning drinks and recipes
If milk is needed for tea, coffee, cereal, sauces or puddings, estimate the quantity before choosing a pack. Leave room in the fridge for fresh milk and check when an opened bottle needs to be used.
Choose fresh skimmed milk for an Easter Sunday lunch if you have fridge space and can use the bottle within its own date and storage instructions. UHT skimmed milk offers a cupboard-stored option for buying ahead; choose between a 1-litre pack and a six-pack according to how much you expect to use. Filtered fresh milk is another format, but its listing name is no substitute for checking the bottle’s date and instructions.

If fat content matters to your choice, compare the nutrition panels. The NHS identifies skimmed milk as a lower-fat milk option; the Tesco and Sainsbury’s bottles described below also list protein and calcium per 100ml.
Buying ahead matters if you normally use a large shop in England or Wales. GOV.UK says shops over 280 square metres there must close on Easter Sunday, although small shops may open.
Work out how much milk the meal needs, then choose a format whose storage and pack instructions fit when you plan to buy and use it.
| Priority | What to check | Your needs |
|---|---|---|
| Quantity | Tesco and Sainsbury’s each list a fresh skimmed-milk bottle containing 2.272L, or 4 pints. Check the volume of any UHT single pack or multipack against your drinks and recipes. | I’m serving several people, so I want enough milk for both cooking and drinks without opening more than I can use. |
| Storage | Check the unopened date and storage directions. Tesco says its fresh 4-pint bottle is best within 5 days of opening; Sainsbury’s says to keep its bottle below 5°C and consume it within 3 days of opening. | If my fridge will be full before lunch, I want to consider an unopened UHT pack for buying ahead, then follow its instructions once opened. |
| Filtered milk | Waitrose & Partners lists a 2L Cravendale filtered skimmed milk alongside a 2.272L Essential fresh skimmed milk. Check the date, storage wording and volume on the product you pick. | A 2L bottle might fit my plan, but I don’t want to assume the words “fresher for longer” tell me how long it will keep after opening. |
| Nutrition label | Compare fat, protein and calcium per 100ml on the exact product. Tesco lists 0.1g fat, 3.6g protein and 130mg calcium per 100ml for its fresh skimmed milk. | I’m choosing skimmed dairy milk and want to compare what the bottles actually list, rather than judging them by the word “skimmed” alone. |
| Shopping day | GOV.UK says shops over 280 square metres in England and Wales must close on Easter Sunday; small shops may open. Scotland has no trading-hours restrictions under that guidance, but store hours still vary. | If I’m counting on a particular shop, I’ll buy ahead or check its Easter opening hours before making the trip. |
Tesco’s listed opened-life wording for its fresh 4-pint skimmed milk differs from Sainsbury’s. Using another bottle’s instructions could leave milk opened for longer than its own label directs.
Check the date and storage wording on the bottle you buy, and choose a size you expect to use within those instructions.
Opening more fresh milk than you can use may mean discarding the remainder.
Tesco and Sainsbury’s both list protein and calcium per 100ml for their fresh skimmed-milk bottles. The NHS also distinguishes a milk’s fat content from its other nutrients.
Read the nutrition panel of the product you intend to serve. If young children are attending, note that NHS guidance allows skimmed milk in cooking for children over 12 months but not as a main drink for children under 5.
Under the GOV.UK trading-hours guidance, shops over 280 square metres in England and Wales must close on Easter Sunday. A normal shopping trip to a large store may therefore not be possible.
Buy the milk beforehand, or check the opening hours of a small shop you could use instead.
Cravendale’s “fresher for longer” wording appears in the Waitrose & Partners listing, but it does not tell you the opened-life instructions for the bottle in your basket.
Compare its 2L volume, date and pack instructions with the fresh milk you would otherwise buy.

These Morrisons UHT skimmed-milk packs are options for buying ahead of Easter Sunday lunch: one is a six-pack and the other is a single 1-litre pack. Choose the volume against your meal plan and check the pack date and storage instructions.

The six-pack provides a stated quantity to plan against drinks and recipes for a larger lunch. Check the unopened date and follow the pack’s storage directions, particularly after opening.

The single 1-litre pack is a smaller stated quantity if you need milk for fewer drinks or recipes. Check its unopened date and storage directions before relying on it for lunch.
Not from a shop over 280 square metres in England or Wales: GOV.UK says those shops must close on Easter Sunday. Small shops may open, and its guidance sets no trading-hours restrictions in Scotland; check the hours of any individual store before travelling.
The Tesco and Sainsbury’s fresh skimmed-milk listings each give the 4-pint volume as 2.272L. How many bottles you need depends on the drinks and recipes planned for your lunch.
Follow the instructions on your particular bottle. Tesco says its listed 4-pint skimmed milk is best within 5 days of opening, while Sainsbury’s says to refrigerate its bottle below 5°C and consume it within 3 days of opening. Check the bottle’s date as well.
The NHS says skimmed milk can be used in cooking for children over 12 months, but it should not be given as a main drink to children under 5. Keep that distinction in mind when planning both dishes and drinks.
No: cow’s skimmed milk contains milk, which Sainsbury’s identifies as an allergen on its product listing. Check the ingredient and allergen label of any alternative separately.
