Who is this meal plan for?

The most useful format depends on how many people you are feeding, whether everyone can eat the same dish and how much space you have to store and cook it.

Hosts feeding a mixed group

A shared main can bring everyone to one table, but you still need to match stated portions to the guest list and leave room to cook the sides. Tesco Groceries lists both family-meal and individual frozen-meal categories, while M&S lists frozen entertaining components.

Hosts accommodating different dietary needs

Separate dishes may be easier to plan than one main for everyone. Tesco Groceries lists free-from, vegetarian and vegan categories, and Waitrose & Partners lists individual frozen meals; check each chosen pack rather than relying on its category.

Hosts with limited freezer space

A menu of mains, sides and extras needs space before cooking begins. If storage is tight, count the packs and check where they will fit before settling on the menu.

How should you choose the meal format?

Shared main and sides

Choose when: Guests can share dishes and you want a family-style table.

Plan for: Separate portion calculations and cooking space for each component.

Individual ready meals

Choose when: Guests need different dishes or you want to allocate a pack to each person.

Plan for: Enough appliance capacity to prepare the selected packs safely.

Family-size ready meal

Choose when: One shared dish suits the group and its declared servings cover the guest count.

Plan for: The tray’s cooking requirements and any sides needed to complete the menu.

Once you have a format in mind, check the exact packs against your guest count, storage space and cooking schedule.

Priority What to check Your needs and reported concerns
Portions Read the declared servings on each pack. Count sides separately and consider whether you need flexibility for an extra guest. I need enough for the group without assuming that a pack labelled “family” serves everyone.
Dietary needs Check each product’s current ingredients and allergen declaration. Do the same for every component of a mixed bundle. If guests need different dishes, I want to choose each one against that person’s requirements rather than trust a category label.
Freezer space Count the packs and check that they will fit before ordering. Include sides and extras in the space you reserve. A multi-dish menu has to fit in my freezer. The British Frozen Food Federation reported in December 2024 that 85% of consumers in findings drawn from a panel of over 80,000 UK consumers limited frozen-food purchases because of insufficient freezer capacity.
Cooking schedule Compare the packs’ appliance instructions, temperatures and timings. Check that each dish can be cooked through and served hot. I want the main and sides ready together, without needing more oven or microwave space than I have.
Meal components Decide which product is the main and which are sides or starters. Check whether a shared dish needs separate accompaniments. For a communal table, I want guests to have a complete meal, not just an assortment of extras.

What could disrupt the plan?

  • Assuming “family” tells you the serving count

Tesco Groceries and Waitrose & Partners list frozen meals in different formats, including individual 400g meals and meals for two. A category name does not establish how many people an exact pack serves.

Check each pack’s stated servings, then account for the sides and the number of guests.

  • Buying more packs than the freezer can hold

A main, sides and starters may all need storage before the party.

Check the available freezer space and the number of packs before choosing the full menu.

  • Choosing dishes with conflicting cooking instructions

Different temperatures and timings can make it difficult to serve everything together. GOV.UK guidance says to follow packet cooking instructions and check that a large dish is hot in the middle.

Make a schedule from the exact packs and check each dish before serving.

  • Using a category label as an allergen check

Guests’ requirements apply to the ingredients of the exact dishes you serve, including sides and items within a bundle.

Check the current product information or physical pack for every item rather than relying on a retailer filter.

Which retailer ranges are relevant?

These retailer categories offer different starting points for a dinner-party menu; check the exact product before planning portions or cooking.

M&S

M&S describes frozen entertaining dishes alongside party food, ready meals, vegetables and desserts.

  • Its frozen range includes Beef Wellingtons and seafood centrepieces that could form the basis of a shared menu.
  • Check the chosen item’s servings and cooking instructions before building the rest of the meal around it.

Waitrose

Waitrose & Partners lists individual frozen ready meals and selected meals for two.

  • Its listings include a 400g frozen beef lasagne and an 800g frozen pea and asparagus risotto for two.
  • Its made-to-order entertaining service is a separate route, not an on-the-day frozen ready-meal choice.

Tesco

Tesco Groceries lists frozen family meals, meals for two and free-from, vegetarian and vegan ready-meal categories.

  • Frozen family-dinner bundles and party-food options offer components for a shared table.
  • Its ready-meal listings also include 400g individual dishes, so check the servings of each selection.

Iceland

Iceland Foods has dedicated Family Ready Meals and Luxury Frozen Ready Meals categories.

  • The family category provides a starting point when looking for a shared frozen ready meal.
  • Use the exact product’s declared servings, ingredients and instructions to decide whether it fits your dinner plan.

Joybuy options for a shared table

These options cover components for a frozen dinner-party spread: chicken, vegetarian noodles, a mixed bundle, vegetables and dim sum. They are not interchangeable family-size ready meals, so plan the main, sides and portions separately.

Questions about frozen meals for guests

Will one frozen meal feed the whole group?

Check the exact pack’s declared servings before deciding. Tesco Groceries and Waitrose & Partners list individual 400g meals as well as other formats, so neither the frozen-meal category nor a “family” label establishes the portions for every product.

Can I cook several frozen dishes at once?

Yes, if you can follow each pack’s instructions with the appliance space and time available. GOV.UK advises following packet temperature guidance and, for a larger dish such as lasagne, cutting into the middle to check for steam before serving.

What if a dish is ready before the guests are?

Serve it promptly if you can. GOV.UK food-hygiene guidance says hot food that is not served straight away must be kept at or above 63°C; it permits keeping it below 63°C for up to two hours. Follow the product’s own handling instructions as well.

Is a vegetarian or free-from category enough to check dietary suitability?

No. Check the current ingredients and allergen information for the exact product, including each item in a bundle. A retailer category helps you narrow the choice but does not replace the pack details for a guest’s requirements.
