Who is each format for?

Two people who want the same dish

A pack explicitly labelled for two keeps portion planning straightforward. Check that its ingredients suit both diners and compare the nutrition for each stated serving.

Households with different preferences

Two individually labelled meals let each person choose a different dish or portion. Check the serving declaration on each pack rather than assuming two packs will provide the quantities you want.

What should you check before choosing?

Decide whether you want a shared dish, separate meals or components, then check the exact packs against both diners’ needs.

One meal labelled for two

Choose it when: Both people want the same recipe and the stated servings suit them.

Bear in mind: A shared dish gives both diners the same ingredients and allergen profile.

Two individual meals

Choose them when: The diners want different dishes or need to select portions separately.

Bear in mind: The two packs may require different cooking methods or timings.

A main with a side

Choose it when: You want to plan a main and additional food as separate portions.

Bear in mind: Check that both items fit your freezer and that you can follow each set of cooking instructions.

Priority What to check Your needs
Portions Read the serving declaration, not just the aisle name or pack weight. Check whether the stated portion is the amount each person plans to eat. I want enough for both of us without assuming that a large-looking pack serves two.
Ingredients Check the ingredients and allergen information on the current physical pack. For a shared dish, its ingredients must suit both diners. We need a dish both people can eat, or separate meals if one shared recipe will not work.
Nutrition Compare information per 100g and for the portion actually eaten. The NHS explains that labels provide nutrition per 100g and may also give it per portion. I want to compare salt, saturates and energy for each person’s meal, whether it comes from one pack or two.
Preparation Read each pack’s method and timing; check whether it is cooked from frozen and whether your equipment is suitable. Follow the product-specific instructions. Both parts of dinner need cooking methods I can manage on the same evening.
Freezer space Check the space available for the pack or packs and follow their storage instructions. The Food Standards Agency advises keeping a freezer around -18°C. For a small top-up shop, I want to be able to store what I buy until I use it.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming a ‘for two’ aisle settles the portion question

An aisle label does not tell you the serving count of every product. Waitrose labels its 800g frozen Paella and Risotto as two servings, while Asda labels its 400g Chicken Curry & Rice as one serving.

Read the serving declaration on the meal you choose and plan any additional food around the portions you intend to serve.

  • Comparing nutrition on different portion bases

Per-100g figures do not show the amount in a larger portion. Waitrose marks its frozen Paella high in salt at 2.44g per half pack.

Compare the amount each person will actually eat. Use a half-pack figure for a shared meal only if you plan to divide the pack equally.

  • Choosing a shared dish before checking both diners’ needs

One unsuitable ingredient or an impractical cooking method affects the whole shared dish. The Waitrose Paella contains crustaceans and molluscs and has hob-cooking instructions.

Check the current physical pack for allergens and confirm that you can follow its cooking method before buying.

Retailer ranges to consider

These retailer examples show different formats to look for; check the serving information on the particular meal you select.

Waitrose

Waitrose lists frozen shared mains explicitly labelled for two, including an 800g Paella and an 800g Risotto.

  • Both examples state two servings and give cooking and nutrition information.
  • Their recipes differ: check allergens and the nutrition for the serving you plan to eat.

Tesco

Tesco has a frozen ‘Ready Meals for 2’ section as well as a broader frozen ready-meal range.

  • The separate sections offer a way to browse shared and other meal formats.
  • Confirm the serving count on the product itself; the section name is not a serving declaration.

Sainsbury’s

Sainsbury’s frozen listing includes several 400g ready meals labelled for one.

  • Individually labelled meals allow two diners to choose different dishes.
  • Check each pack’s ingredients, portion and cooking instructions when pairing two meals.

Asda

Asda lists frozen ready meals including a 400g Chicken Curry & Rice labelled as one serving.

  • The serving declaration makes clear that this example is an individual meal.
  • For two diners, check both chosen portions and their separate nutrition information.

Iceland

Iceland has a dedicated frozen-ready-meals department.

  • The department provides a starting point for browsing frozen meal formats.
  • Check whether an individual product serves one or two; the department name does not establish its portions.

M&S

M&S lists larger frozen mains, including dishes weighing 640g to 1kg, alongside vegetarian and vegan options.

  • Larger mains give shoppers another format to consider alongside individual ready meals.
  • Weight alone does not establish servings. Check the selected dish and your local Foodhall’s stock.

Questions about frozen meals for two

How can I tell whether a frozen meal feeds two?

Start with the pack’s explicit serving declaration, then decide whether its stated portions suit both diners. Waitrose labels its frozen Paella and Risotto as two servings; Asda labels its 400g Chicken Curry & Rice as one.

Should I compare nutrition per 100g or per serving?

Use per 100g to compare products on the same basis, then check the figures for the amount each person will actually eat. The NHS notes that labels may give nutrition per portion as well as per 100g; the stated portion may differ from the amount you serve.

Is an online ingredients list enough when someone has an allergy?

Use the current physical pack for the final ingredients and allergen check. Waitrose advises checking product labels because recipes can change; for a shared meal, check that the dish suits both people.

How should I store and cook frozen meals at home?

Keep them frozen and follow each product’s storage, freezing, defrosting and cooking instructions. The Food Standards Agency advises keeping a freezer around -18°C and following the instructions on the label rather than applying one method to every meal.
