Who is each format for?

Cooking a roast for one

A sealed steam pouch saves portioning a loose bag. Check its weight against the rest of your plate rather than assuming one pouch equals one adult vegetable portion: the NHS uses 80g as its adult fruit-and-vegetable portion reference.

Using the microwave while the roast rests

An individual steam pouch can keep vegetable preparation separate from the oven. Follow the chosen pack’s microwave and standing-time instructions, and check that the vegetables are piping hot before serving.

Planning a traditional vegetable mix

If broccoli, cauliflower or green beans matter more to your roast plate than sealed portions, compare ingredients first. A loose medley may give you the combination you want, but you will need to portion and store the remaining frozen vegetables.

What should you check?

Start with the vegetables you want beside the roast, then decide whether a sealed portion is worth giving up the flexibility of a loose mix.

PriorityWhat to checkYour needs
Portion format Compare pouch count and weight with a loose bag. Four bags in a 540g pack work out to 135g each; Waitrose lists its Fine Cut and Garden steamers as four 160g pouches. I would rather open one sealed portion than measure vegetables from a larger bag.
Amount per plate Use the NHS 80g adult fruit-and-vegetable portion reference to understand the weight, not as a rule that a whole pouch must be eaten or shared. Consider the other vegetables on the roast plate. A 160g pouch might be more than I want alongside other sides; I could share it if that suits the meal.
Vegetable mix Read the ingredients, not just the range name. Waitrose lists broccoli and green beans in its Fine Cut pouch; Marks & Spencer lists broccoli and cauliflower in its Steamed British Vegetable Medley. Birds Eye’s Steamfresh range also includes rice and pasta products. I want vegetables that go with the roast, rather than buying a rice or pasta side by mistake.
Cooking method Check the pack method, microwave wattage and any standing time. GOV.UK advises thoroughly cooking frozen vegetables such as peas, carrots and sweetcorn according to packet instructions. I need the vegetables ready as the roast finishes, without cutting short their stated cooking time.

What can go wrong?

  • Assuming one steam bag means one 5 A Day portion

A whole pouch can weigh more than the NHS 80g adult fruit-and-vegetable portion reference. The pack’s stated serving and that reference describe different things.

Check grams per pouch and decide how much fits alongside the other roast vegetables; you do not have to treat 80g as a limit.

  • Picking a rice or pasta pouch instead of a vegetable side

Birds Eye’s Steamfresh range includes vegetable sides as well as rice and pasta products. A range name alone does not tell you which part of dinner the pouch will provide.

Read the full product name and ingredients before choosing the side for your roast.

  • Rushing the cooking time

GOV.UK notes that frozen vegetables such as peas, carrots and sweetcorn can contain bacteria and should be thoroughly cooked according to packet instructions.

Follow the time and method for your pack and appliance, allow any stated standing time, and take care when opening a hot pouch.

Relevant brands and ranges

These ranges illustrate the choice between individual steam pouches and a loose vegetable mix; the ingredients and pack format still matter more than the brand name.

Birds Eye

Birds Eye’s Steamfresh range includes vegetable pouches, rice sides and pasta products.

  • The Super Sunshine Mix is a carrot, pea and sweetcorn option sold as four steam bags in a 540g pack.
  • Check the specific product name if you want plain vegetables rather than rice or pasta.

Waitrose

Waitrose lists Fine Cut and Garden frozen vegetable steamers in four 160g pouches.

  • Fine Cut includes broccoli, carrots, green beans, peas and sweetcorn; Garden includes broad beans, broccoli, green beans and petits pois.
  • Consider whether a 160g pouch fits one plate or would be better shared.

Tesco

Tesco lists an own-label Carrot, Broccoli & Corn steam-bag option.

  • Its listed format is four 160g bags, giving a sealed-portion option with broccoli.
  • Check the individual bag weight against the amount you want beside the rest of the roast.

M&S

Marks & Spencer’s Steamed British Vegetable Medley offers a loose-mix alternative to individual pouches.

  • The listed mix contains broccoli, cauliflower, peas and Chantenay carrots.
  • It is not a set of individually sealed portions, so take out the amount needed for the meal.

Questions about frozen roast vegetables

Is one frozen vegetable steam bag always one adult portion?

No. The NHS uses 80g as an adult fruit-and-vegetable portion reference, while a bag’s weight can be higher: four bags in a 540g pack work out to 135g each, and Waitrose lists 160g pouches. Check the weight and the other vegetables on your roast plate before deciding whether to eat or share a pouch.

Which vegetable mix goes with a traditional Sunday roast?

Choose by the vegetables you want, rather than by pouch format alone. Waitrose Fine Cut Steamers include broccoli and green beans; Marks & Spencer’s Steamed British Vegetable Medley includes broccoli and cauliflower but needs portioning from a loose pack. Birds Eye Super Sunshine Mix contains carrots, peas and sweetcorn.

Can I cook frozen vegetables without thawing them?

Yes, when the chosen pack instructs you to cook them from frozen. Follow its method and timing, including any microwave wattage and standing-time directions. GOV.UK advises thoroughly cooking frozen vegetables such as peas, carrots and sweetcorn according to the packet instructions.

Should I thaw a steam pouch before the roast is ready?

Do not thaw it first if its instructions specify cooking from frozen. Time the pouch around the roast using the pack directions, check that the vegetables are piping hot, and open the hot bag carefully.
