Who is this for?

Night-shift workers planning a smaller break snack

A single bar can be packed for a break between planned meals. Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust advises regular eating and suggests a smaller snack or light meal during a night break rather than one large meal.

Vegan or gluten-free bar shoppers

TREK describes its Cocoa Oat flapjack as vegan and made with gluten-free oats. Check the exact flavour’s ingredients and allergen statement too: it contains soy and may contain peanuts, nuts and milk.

Shoppers avoiding particular allergens

The compared protein bars list ingredients such as peanuts, soy and milk, with some carrying may-contain statements. Use the current pack for the exact flavour to decide whether it meets your requirements.

What should you check?

Start with the figures for one bar, then check the exact flavour’s ingredients and the pack format against your planned break.

PriorityWhat to checkYour needs
Protein per bar Compare protein in one bar, alongside its weight. Nature Valley UK lists 10.2g per 40g Peanut & Chocolate bar; TREK lists 9g per 50g Cocoa Oat flapjack. I want to know how much protein is in the bar I will actually take on shift, rather than compare pack-front wording.
Portion and energy Check the bar’s weight and energy per serving. Tesco Groceries lists 173kcal per 35g Kellogg’s High Protein Almond & Salted Caramel bar; TREK lists 227kcal per 50g Cocoa Oat flapjack. A smaller portion might fit my break; I can compare one-bar figures without treating bars of different sizes as equal portions.
Sugars and fibre Read both figures per bar. Nature Valley UK lists 6.9g sugars and 4.4g fibre per 40g Peanut & Chocolate bar; TREK lists 14g sugars and 2g fibre per 50g Cocoa Oat flapjack. Protein alone does not tell me the sugars or fibre in my snack, so I want to see the full per-bar panel.
Ingredients and allergens Check the current ingredients and may-contain statement for the exact flavour. TREK Cocoa Oat contains soy and may contain peanuts, nuts and milk. If I need to avoid an ingredient, vegan or gluten-free wording cannot replace an allergen check.
Pack and flavour Confirm the number and size of bars in the pack, the flavour and the seller’s current listing before choosing a multipack. I want to pack the portion I compared, not assume another flavour or pack has the same nutrition and ingredients.

What is easy to overlook?

  • Assuming a protein message means less sugar

TREK lists 14g sugars and 9g protein per 50g Cocoa Oat flapjack, while Nature Valley UK lists 6.9g sugars and 10.2g protein per 40g Peanut & Chocolate bar. The portions differ as well as the figures.

Compare sugars, protein, fibre and energy for the single bar you plan to eat.

  • Comparing only per-100g protein

The checked bars weigh between 35g and 50g. A per-100g figure does not tell you how much protein is in one of those portions.

Start with protein and energy per bar; use per-100g values when you need a comparison at the same weight.

  • Reading vegan or gluten-free as allergen-free

TREK describes Cocoa Oat as vegan and made with gluten-free oats, but it contains soy and may contain peanuts, nuts and milk.

For an ingredient exclusion, read the ingredients and precautionary statement on the current pack of the exact flavour.

  • Assuming an older listing covers today’s purchase

Tesco Groceries’ checked listing marked Kellogg’s High Protein Almond & Salted Caramel as out of stock. A different flavour is not the same bar for nutrition or ingredient checks.

Check the seller’s current listing and the pack label before ordering or substituting a flavour.

Frequently asked questions

Does a protein message tell me how much sugar is in a bar?

No. Compare both figures for the bar you will eat: Nature Valley UK lists 10.2g protein and 6.9g sugars per 40g Peanut & Chocolate bar, while TREK lists 9g protein and 14g sugars per 50g Cocoa Oat flapjack.

Should a cereal bar replace meals throughout a night shift?

Use it as a planned snack rather than a replacement for all meals. Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust advises regular eating and says a smaller snack or light meal during a night break may be preferable to one large meal.

Which allergens matter in the compared protein bars?

Check the current pack of the exact flavour. Nature Valley Peanut & Chocolate contains peanuts, soy and milk and may contain tree nuts; TREK Cocoa Oat contains soy and may contain peanuts, nuts and milk. The checked Eat Natural Peanuts, Almonds & Salted Caramel bar includes peanuts, almonds, soy and milk-derived ingredients, while the checked Kellogg’s bar contains peanuts, almonds, milk and soy and may contain other nuts and gluten from other cereals.
