Who needs which checks?

Walkers avoiding gluten

Look for an explicit gluten-free statement rather than judging a crisp by its main ingredient. Seabrook describes its crisps and snacks as gluten-free and Coeliac UK accredited; REAL says its crisp range is gluten-free. Check the flavour and pack you intend to carry.

Vegan walkers packing a small snack

Seabrook labels Sea Salted vegan in a 31.8g bag, and REAL labels Sea Salt vegan and offers a 35g bag. Check the current pack if you also need to avoid a particular allergen.

Walkers checking allergens or salt

A gluten-free or vegetarian claim does not answer every allergy question. Tyrrells Naked states “May contain milk”, while Walkers Lightly Salted lists several possible allergens. If salt matters to your choice, compare the same per 100g measure on the exact flavours.

What matters when choosing?

Settle any dietary or allergen requirement first, then compare pack format and the nutrition values relevant to you.

PriorityWhat to checkYour needs
Dietary claims and allergens Read the exact flavour’s gluten-free or vegan claim, ingredients and precautionary allergen wording. Do not treat vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free as interchangeable. If I must avoid gluten or another allergen, I need the pack’s wording to address that particular requirement—not just a familiar brand or a short ingredient list.
Pack format Check the bag size and whether you want to divide a sharing pack before leaving. Keep its allergen information available if you repackage it. I want a snack I can reach during the walk, while still carrying food and drink for the day. The British Mountaineering Council also advises bringing emergency food.
Salt Compare salt per 100g on the exact products; check the pack quantity separately. Tyrrells lists 0.06g per 100g for Naked, while KETTLE lists 0.7g per 100g for Lightly Salted. When I’m comparing salt values, I still need the chosen pack’s dietary claims and allergen wording to fit my requirements. Tyrrells Naked, for example, states “May contain milk”.

Common packing mistakes

  • Treating dietary labels as interchangeable

A vegetarian claim does not establish that a crisp is vegan or gluten-free, and a simple ingredient list does not settle precautionary allergen warnings. McCoy’s Salted is labelled vegetarian but states that it may contain milk, soya, gluten and mustard.

Start with the requirement you cannot compromise on, then read the exact pack’s dietary claims, ingredients and allergen statements.

  • Packing a sharing bag without considering portions

A larger bag may need dividing if you want an individual portion that is easy to reach during a walk.

Choose an individual bag where its label meets your needs, or divide a sharing bag before leaving and keep its original allergen information available.

  • Planning the walk around one bag of crisps

A salt value tells you about that product, not how much food and drink to carry. The British Mountaineering Council advises enough food for the day, regular snacks and emergency food; Mountaineering Scotland also advises carrying adequate food and drink.

Compare crisp labels if salt matters to you, but plan food and drink for the route and conditions separately.

Brand and product-line references

Seabrook

Seabrook describes its crisps and snacks as gluten-free and Coeliac UK accredited.

  • Sea Salted is labelled gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan in a 31.8g bag.
  • Check the exact flavour and pack for any additional allergen requirement.

REAL Hand Cooked Crisps

REAL states that its crisp range is vegetarian and gluten-free.

  • REAL Sea Salt is labelled vegan and comes in 35g and 150g bags.
  • Do not assume that a dietary claim for Sea Salt applies to every other flavour or allergen requirement.

KETTLE Chips

KETTLE labels its Lightly Salted crisps gluten-free and suitable for vegans.

  • Lightly Salted lists 0.7g salt per 100g.
  • The 130g bag is a sharing format; divide it beforehand if you want a smaller portion for the walk.

Tyrrells

Tyrrells Naked is an option to examine when listed salt and ingredients are the main comparison points.

  • Naked lists potatoes and sunflower oil as ingredients and 0.06g salt per 100g.
  • Its “May contain milk” statement matters if you need to avoid milk.

Walkers

Walkers Lightly Salted has its own allergen wording, which needs checking independently of its salt-related name.

  • Walkers lists possible milk, wheat, gluten, barley, soya, celery and mustard presence for Lightly Salted.

McCoy’s

McCoy’s Salted is labelled suitable for vegetarians.

  • The Salted product states that it may contain milk, soya, gluten and mustard; its vegetarian label does not resolve those allergen requirements.

Questions about hiking crisps

Are plain potato crisps automatically gluten-free?

No. Choose by the exact product’s gluten-free claim and allergen information rather than its potato base. Seabrook describes its crisps and snacks as gluten-free, whereas Walkers Lightly Salted states that it may contain wheat, gluten and barley.

Does a vegan crisp meet a milk-allergy requirement?

A vegan claim alone does not settle a milk-allergy decision. Check the exact pack’s ingredients and precautionary allergen statement. Food Standards Agency guidance explains that “may contain” wording concerns possible unintended allergen presence; Tyrrells Naked, despite its short ingredient list, states “May contain milk”.

Should crisps be the main food I carry on a hike?

Plan more than a bag of crisps. The British Mountaineering Council advises carrying enough food for the day, snacking regularly and bringing emergency food; Mountaineering Scotland also advises adequate food and drink during a walk.
