Questions about taking milkshakes hiking
Can I carry an unopened UHT milkshake on a day hike?
Yes, if that drink’s current pack permits ambient storage before opening and you can follow its instructions afterwards. Yazoo says its flavoured milk can be stored in a cupboard until opened, and ASDA lists its 400ml Chocolate drink as UHT with ambient storage; do not apply those instructions to a different milkshake without checking.
Should I carry a 1-litre milk drink for an all-day walk?
A litre carton is more practical for sharing at a base with dependable cooling than for carrying throughout a walk. ASDA’s 1-litre chocolate flavoured milk says to keep it refrigerated, and the Food Standards Agency’s camping guidance specifies storage below 5°C for food that needs chilling.
What if I open the drink during the hike?
Plan to finish it during the outing if you cannot follow its after-opening refrigeration instructions. Cupboard storage before opening does not mean an opened milk drink can be carried unrefrigerated; read the directions on the bottle you have.
How do I check whether a milkshake fits my ingredient requirements?
Read the current pack’s allergen declaration and ingredients list before drinking it. Check milk, any declared cereals and sweeteners for the specific product, rather than assuming every flavour or brand has the same ingredients.
Does “no added sugar” mean a milkshake contains no sugars?
No: that wording is not the same as a zero-sugars declaration. Check the sugars figure per 100ml and the ingredients list, including any sweeteners, on the pack you are buying.
