Who is this setup for?
The useful monitor features depend on whether your daily constraint is document space, repeated laptop connections or video calls.
Document-heavy home workers
If you spend long periods in spreadsheets, documents and browser windows, compare screen size, native resolution and stand adjustment with the room available on your desk. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) also advises considering the position of the whole workstation, not just the screen.
Laptop users connecting at a desk
A monitor with USB ports and charging may reduce the connections you make each time you sit down. Check your laptop’s USB-C video capability and charging requirement against the exact monitor before planning on one cable.
People making video calls from home
Check whether your computer already has a suitable camera and microphone. A separate webcam lets you choose the display independently; an integrated conferencing monitor keeps the camera attached to the screen.
What should you check first?
Confirm how the computer will connect before comparing panels. Then work through desk fit, screen positioning and the equipment needed for calls.

What to check |
Your needs |
| Computer connection |
Match the computer’s video output to a monitor input. For one-cable use, check USB-C video support on the laptop, the monitor’s upstream connection and its stated USB Power Delivery limit; a USB-C-shaped port alone establishes none of these functions. |
I connect a laptop at the desk often and would value fewer cables, but I need to know that it can send video and receive enough power through this monitor. |
| Screen and desk fit |
Compare the panel’s physical size and native resolution with usable desk space and your preferred operating-system scaling. Dell and Lenovo UK list both 23.8-inch and 27-inch QHD (2560 × 1440) office-oriented options; the larger panel does not add pixels when resolution is the same. |
Spreadsheets and documents need room on screen, while the monitor still has to fit at a comfortable viewing distance. |
| Workstation position |
Check height and other stand adjustments alongside chair, keyboard and mouse placement. HSE guidance places the top of the screen around eye level and the display about an arm’s length away; prolonged laptop use calls for a separate keyboard and mouse so its screen can be raised. |
I work at the screen for extended periods and want to position it without leaving the keyboard or main display awkwardly off-centre. |
| Video-call equipment |
Check camera, microphone and audio output separately: speakers do not provide video capture. HP UK lists a pop-up 5MP webcam on the 527pm conferencing monitor; an existing computer camera or separate webcam is another arrangement. |
For calls, I need a camera position that works at my desk, not conferencing hardware simply because a monitor has speakers. |
Relevant monitor brands
These manufacturer examples illustrate different connection and conferencing arrangements; features belong to the named models, not every monitor carrying the brand.
Dell
Dell UK lists standard QHD office monitors alongside USB-C hub models in its Pro Plus range.
- Dell lists the 23.8-inch P2425D with a 2560 × 1440 panel and height and pivot adjustment.
- For a laptop desk, check the exact model: Dell specifies USB-C DisplayPort Alternate Mode and power delivery up to 90W on the P2725DE, rather than on every Pro Plus display.
Lenovo
Lenovo UK lists a conventional 27-inch QHD display and a distinct USB-C docking model.
- The L27q-4A listing specifies two HDMI inputs, DisplayPort, speakers and lift, tilt, pivot and swivel adjustment.
- The L27h-4A is the separate model Lenovo lists with 75W USB-C power delivery and a four-port USB hub; check its current availability if those functions matter.
HP
HP UK lists the 527pm as a QHD conferencing monitor for a desk where integrated call hardware is wanted.
- HP specifies a 27-inch QHD panel, a pop-up tiltable 5MP webcam and USB-C power delivery up to 100W for the 527pm.
- Its built-in camera stays with the monitor’s position. Check that arrangement and the laptop’s charging requirement before choosing it over a separate webcam.

Frequently asked questions
Will any USB-C laptop work with a USB-C monitor through one cable?
No. The laptop must support video over the relevant USB-C connection, and its charging requirement must fit the monitor’s power-delivery capability. VESA describes DisplayPort over USB-C as a specific alternate mode, while the USB Implementers Forum describes power delivery between connected devices. Check both devices’ specifications; otherwise use a confirmed video connection or assess a suitable adapter.
Do I still need a dock with a USB-C hub monitor?
Not if the monitor provides the display, charging and peripheral connections your compatible laptop needs. Compare its documented ports and power-delivery limit with your laptop and accessories. A separate dock or adapter remains an option if those requirements are not met, particularly for a different port or multi-display arrangement.
Should I choose a monitor with a webcam for video calls?
Choose integrated hardware when its camera position and functions suit your calls; otherwise, keep the display choice separate and use an existing or add-on webcam. HP UK lists a pop-up camera on the 527pm conferencing monitor, whereas speakers on a monitor do not themselves provide a camera. Check microphone needs as well.
How should I position a monitor for prolonged work?
HSE guidance advises placing the top of the screen around eye level, about an arm’s length away, with the screen and keyboard in front of you. For prolonged laptop use, a separate keyboard and mouse allow its screen to be raised. Adjust the arrangement to the desk and chair rather than relying on the monitor stand alone.
Do UK workplace display-screen rules apply when I work from home?
According to the HSE, display screen equipment requirements apply to workers who use it daily for continuous periods of an hour or more, including qualifying home workers. Where those requirements apply, employers should carry out an individual workstation assessment; if a home-workstation assessment identifies action requiring equipment, the worker cannot be charged for it. The assessment does not prescribe a particular monitor model.
