Who this guide is for

All-day laptop workers

If you work at one home workstation for extended periods, consider whether you need to position the screen and controls separately. The Health and Safety Executive advises raising the laptop screen with a riser or similar and using a separate keyboard and mouse.

Hybrid desk-switchers

If you reconnect your laptop at home and elsewhere, check the connections you repeat, what the laptop’s ports support and whether a hub or dock supplies the power you need.

Small-space workers

If desk space is limited, measure the usable area before choosing a monitor, stand or arm. Consider whether raising your existing laptop and using separate controls would suit the space.

What to consider before buying

Start by identifying whether the main issue is screen position, repeat connections, spending responsibility or a specific call or lighting need. The percentages below refer to consumers choosing equipment for a home laptop workstation, grouped by their main purchasing concern.

Concern What to check when buying Who this matters to
Screen space and position Measure usable desk space; check the intended screen position, display connection and any charging requirement. If the laptop screen feels restrictive during extended work, I would prioritise usable display space and positioning. Around 28% of consumers put screen space or position first.
Positioning in a small space Measure the desk; check a stand’s stability or an arm’s weight range, VESA pattern and attachment method. Plan separate controls if raising the laptop. When my desk is small, I need the screen and controls to fit in workable positions without assuming a full-size monitor will fit. Roughly 22% of consumers prioritise positioning in limited space.
Ports, displays and charging List the devices and displays you use; check the laptop’s exact port capabilities, dock outputs and power delivered to the laptop. If I reconnect several devices, I want a hub or dock that works with my laptop and the displays I use. About 22% of consumers put connections and charging first.
Who pays and what is included If employed, discuss the assessment outcome and equipment provision before buying; check which power supplies and cables come with the chosen product. Before paying personally, I want to know whether equipment identified by a workplace assessment should be provided for me. Approximately 17% of consumers prioritise spending responsibility and provision.
Calls and lighting Identify whether the issue is camera, audio, task visibility or screen reflections; check connections and any software permissions required. If calls or lighting are the specific problem, I would focus on the accessory that addresses it rather than expecting it to change screen position. Around 11% of consumers prioritise calls or lighting.

Buying pitfalls to avoid

  • Assuming any USB-C port handles video and charging

A dock’s maximum charging claim or a hub’s power-input rating does not necessarily tell you how much power reaches your laptop with the supplied equipment.

Check the exact laptop port, supported display setup, delivered charging power and included power supply before choosing a monitor, hub or dock.

If the supplied power arrangement does not meet your needs, you may need a compatible charger or another connection arrangement.

  • Raising a laptop but continuing to type on its built-in keyboard

Raising the screen does not move the keyboard and touchpad independently.

Plan the screen position and separate keyboard and mouse together for extended laptop use. The Health and Safety Executive recommends separate controls when raising a laptop screen.

  • Buying assessed work equipment before discussing who provides it

In Great Britain, the Health and Safety Executive says workers cannot be charged for DSE equipment provided as an action required by an applicable assessment.

If you are an employee, discuss the home-workstation assessment and equipment provision or reimbursement before buying an item identified as necessary.

  • Choosing a monitor arm by screen size alone

Mounting compatibility also depends on the monitor’s weight and VESA pattern, and on how the arm attaches to the desk. Ergotron describes its LX 45-241-224 as discontinued, so its specifications are an example of fit checks, not a current availability recommendation.

Check the full monitor-and-desk fit against the specifications of the arm you are considering.

Relevant brands to consider

Dell

Dell UK lists the P2725DE as a 27-inch QHD USB-C hub monitor for a fixed workstation.

  • Dell specifies 90 W power delivery and Ethernet for this model.
  • Those specifications do not establish that another Dell monitor, or your laptop, supports the same one-cable setup. Check the exact connection and charging requirements.

Lenovo

Lenovo lists the ThinkPad Universal USB-C Dock 40AY0090UK for a fixed desk with recurring connections.

  • The listing identifies display, USB and Ethernet connections.
  • The listing gives 65 W charging and a 90 W included adapter alongside an up-to-100 W claim. Confirm the delivered power and supported display setup for the actual laptop and supplied unit.

Anker

Anker’s UK-listed 555 A8383 is a portable multiport hub option.

  • Anker specifies HDMI, data connections and pass-through charging for this model.
  • Anker says the hub uses 15 W of a possible 100 W input and that a wall charger is not included. Its USB-C data ports do not provide video output.

Logitech

Logitech’s MX Keys Mini keyboard and Brio 500 webcam address separate input and meeting-accessory needs.

  • The manufacturer lists the MX Keys Mini as a compact keyboard and specifies a 1080p webcam for the Brio 500.
  • The Brio 500’s auto-framing requires Logi Tune; check whether your work laptop permits that software. Manufacturer descriptions of posture or image quality are not independent performance findings.

Ergotron

Ergotron’s LX 45-241-224 specifications illustrate the checks needed when fitting a monitor arm to a display and desk.

  • Ergotron specifies a 3.2–11.3 kg range and 75 × 75 or 100 × 100 mm VESA mounting for this model.
  • Ergotron describes this particular SKU as discontinued. Use its specifications as a fit-check example, not as an indication of current availability.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a raised laptop without buying a monitor?

Yes, if the resulting workstation suits your needs. For extended laptop use, the Health and Safety Executive advises using a separate keyboard and mouse so the screen can be raised independently; assess the whole arrangement rather than treating a stand alone as a complete setup.

Will any USB-C dock run my displays and charge my laptop?

No. Compare the laptop’s supported connection and display configuration with the exact dock, then check the power delivered to the laptop against its requirements. An input rating or maximum charging claim does not by itself establish the supplied setup’s output.

Does my employer have to pay for my home setup?

Not for every accessory you would personally prefer. In Great Britain, the Health and Safety Executive says that when an applicable home-working DSE assessment identifies action such as providing DSE equipment, workers cannot be charged for it. Northern Ireland has separate guidance from the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland. Discuss the assessment and who will provide equipment or repairs before making a personal purchase.

Do DSE assessment requirements cover every occasional home user?

No. In Great Britain, the Health and Safety Executive describes the rules as applying to workers who use display screen equipment daily for continuous periods of an hour or more, including qualifying home workers. The Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland describes daily use for an hour or more at a time and says infrequent or short use is outside its DSE rules. An assessment considers the workstation; it is not a mandatory shopping list.

What if an online accessory purchase is unsuitable or faulty?

For covered UK distance purchases, GOV.UK says consumers generally have 14 days after receiving an item to notify the seller of cancellation and a further 14 days to return it; exceptions can apply. Faulty or misdescribed goods have separate remedies. Check the seller’s terms and the circumstances of your purchase.
