Who is this setup for?

Fixed-desk hybrid workers

If you repeatedly return to the same desk, you may want displays, charging, a keyboard, mouse and possibly Ethernet ready to reconnect without swapping several cables. The right dock still depends on your laptop’s display and charging support.

Workers moving between locations

If you carry your laptop between home, an office and shared spaces, a compact adapter may fit a simpler, single-display setup. Check that your laptop’s USB-C port supports the adapter functions you intend to use.

People working at a laptop for long sessions

If screen height and input position matter more to you than extra ports, consider an elevated laptop screen with a separate keyboard and mouse, or a separate display. This follows Health and Safety Executive guidance for prolonged laptop use.

What should you check before buying?

Start with the displays and connections your laptop can support. Then decide whether leaving equipment connected at a regular desk, carrying less between locations or improving your working position matters most.

ConcernWhat to checkWho this matters to
Display compatibility Check the exact laptop model’s supported number of extended displays and the video mode required by the dock or adapter. If I need two independent monitors, I want to know my laptop can drive them before choosing a dock; around 33% of consumers put display compatibility first.
Desk reconnection Compare the dock’s delivered charging power for your laptop with its requirements, and check the display, USB and Ethernet connections you need. Returning to a regular desk, I would rather reconnect displays and peripherals with one host cable than swap them individually; around 27% of consumers prioritise that routine.
Portability Check that a compact adapter has the connections you use at changing workplaces, including charging pass-through or Ethernet if needed. When I move between workspaces and usually connect one display, carrying less equipment matters most; around 20% of consumers put portability first.
Long-session setup Check whether a raised screen or separate monitor and a separate keyboard and mouse will fit your desk. For prolonged laptop sessions, I need to position the screen and input devices separately rather than add more ports; around 20% of consumers make this their primary concern.

Common setup mistakes

  • Assuming any USB-C port will handle video and charging

The connector alone does not establish whether the laptop supports DisplayPort Alt Mode, Power Delivery or the intended number of displays. A dock can have the sockets you need without producing the required setup.

Check the exact laptop model’s display specifications, then match its port capabilities to the dock, monitor input and cable.

  • Expecting two Mac displays to extend because a hub has two outputs

Apple says a supported hub does not increase a Mac’s maximum number of external displays. UGREEN also warns that its Revodok Pro 10-in-1 dock can show identical images on macOS external monitors.

Confirm both your exact Mac model’s display limit and the specific hub’s extend-or-mirror behaviour before buying.

  • Treating DisplayLink as a native, software-free connection

DisplayLink provides a different display route, but DisplayLink Manager on macOS requires installation and Screen Recording permission. Individual docks may also have protected-video limitations.

Check whether software installation is permitted on your work laptop and whether the particular dock supports the content you need to display.

  • Raising the laptop but continuing to use its built-in keyboard

A stand can change screen height without giving the keyboard and mouse suitable positions for prolonged use. The Health and Safety Executive advises using separate input devices when elevating a laptop screen, or using a separate display.

Plan space for the screen and input devices together, whether you connect them through a dock or directly to the laptop.

Brands to consider

Dell

Dell’s business-oriented docks are relevant to fixed desks needing host charging and several connections.

  • Dell specifies Thunderbolt 4 and multiple display modes for its Pro Dock WD25TB4.
  • For that model, Dell states power delivery of up to 130W for Dell systems but 96W for non-Dell systems; the laptop and display configuration still need checking.

UGREEN

UGREEN offers compact USB-C hubs as well as larger docks, covering different travel and fixed-desk connection needs.

  • Its Revodok Pro 10-in-1 dock lists display connections, charging pass-through and Ethernet.
  • UGREEN makes full compatibility conditional on laptop Power Delivery and DisplayPort Alt Mode support, and warns that external displays may mirror on macOS with this model.

Plugable

Plugable has DisplayLink-based docks for people considering a software-dependent alternative to native Mac display output.

  • Plugable markets the UD-6950PDH for two 4K displays and 100W charging on supported systems.
  • Plugable says full functionality requires driver installation and that HDCP-protected video is not supported on this model.

Frequently asked questions

Will a dock with two HDMI sockets give me two extended monitors?

Not necessarily: the laptop must support the intended independent displays as well as the dock connection. Apple says hubs do not raise a Mac’s maximum external-display count, while Microsoft advises checking whether the Windows laptop’s display hardware supports more than one monitor.

Do all MacBook Air models support the same external displays?

No. Apple lists one external display up to 6K at 60Hz for the M1 MacBook Air; the M3 MacBook Air can use a second external display up to 5K at 60Hz with its lid closed. Check Apple’s specifications for your exact model before choosing a dock or monitors.

Can DisplayLink help if my Mac has a limited native display count?

A compatible DisplayLink dock can offer an alternative display path, but it does not change the Mac’s native display limit. On macOS, DisplayLink Manager requires installation and Screen Recording permission; check workplace software rules and the dock’s video limitations before purchase.

Does workstation guidance matter when I work from home?

Yes, if your work meets the relevant conditions: the Health and Safety Executive says the Display Screen Equipment Regulations apply to workers who use display screen equipment daily for continuous periods of an hour or more. For prolonged laptop use, its setup guidance advises a separate keyboard and mouse so the screen can be raised, or a separate display.
