What to check before choosing
For routine home or hybrid screen work, start with the need that would determine your first purchase. Then check the laptop and any proposed accessory as a pair, particularly if you want more than one extended display.

What to check when buying |
Who this matters to |
| Display compatibility |
Check the exact laptop’s video-capable ports and supported external-display count at your intended resolution and refresh rate. |
If I need two extended screens, I want to know they will work with my laptop before choosing a dock. Around 36% of consumers put that compatibility question first. |
| One-cable desk connection |
Match the dock or USB-C monitor’s stated power delivery to the laptop’s charging needs, and confirm the display, USB and network connections you require. |
Repeatedly reconnecting devices at one desk makes a single host connection appealing; around 29% of consumers prioritise that simpler desk routine. |
| Screen and input positioning |
Decide whether you need more screen space or chiefly need to raise the laptop screen; pair a riser with a separate keyboard and mouse for prolonged use. |
If the laptop screen sits too low during sustained work, I would address its position before adding more ports. Around 21% of consumers make positioning their primary concern. |
| Portability between desks |
Work out what stays at each location and check the connections and power needs of any display or adapter you plan to carry. |
When I change desks regularly, I want a setup I can transport and reconnect without relying on a fixed dock. Portability comes first for around 14% of consumers. |

Frequently asked questions
Must a UK hybrid worker buy a monitor or dock personally?
Not automatically. The Health and Safety Executive says the display screen equipment rules can apply to workers using display screen equipment daily for continuous periods of an hour or more who work from home permanently or long term, or routinely split work between home and a workplace. If an applicable workstation assessment identifies action such as providing equipment, the worker cannot be charged; it does not mean every preferred accessory is automatically required.
Can any USB-C laptop use a dock with two extended monitors?
No: the laptop’s port must support the relevant video connection, and the exact model must support the intended display arrangement. Check its DisplayPort Alt Mode, Thunderbolt or USB4 capabilities and its external-display limits. Apple notes that Mac display support also depends on the model and each display’s resolution and refresh rate.
Will an HDMI splitter give me two separate extended screens?
No. Microsoft Support says a display splitter duplicates the same signal rather than producing two independent extended displays. Check the laptop’s display limits and choose a connection that supports the number of separate screens you need.
What should I check before using a DisplayLink dock with a Mac?
Check that the proposed dock supports your Mac and that you can complete the required software setup. DisplayLink Support says DisplayLink Manager needs macOS permissions, including Screen Recording permission, to render displays through a DisplayLink-based connection.
Is a laptop riser useful without an external monitor?
Yes, if raising the laptop screen is the main need rather than adding screen space. For prolonged laptop use, the Health and Safety Executive advises using a separate keyboard and mouse so the screen can be elevated; a riser alone does not add display area or ports.
