Who needs to plan a setup?
Start with how and where you use the laptop: the right accessories depend on the workstation, not just the laptop.
Regular laptop-based hybrid workers
If you use a screen daily for continuous periods of an hour or more and split work between home and an employer workplace, consider both setups. The Health and Safety Executive says a workstation assessment should cover home and office use in Great Britain; the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland also calls for individual DSE needs to be assessed.
Workers with a fixed home desk
If the laptop screen cannot be placed suitably for prolonged work, compare a separate display with a raised laptop and separate input devices. The Health and Safety Executive advises using a separate keyboard and mouse when elevating a laptop screen.
Workers who reconnect several peripherals
If you regularly attach a display, network connection and input devices after returning home, a dock may simplify the connections. Check the exact laptop’s video protocol, supported displays, charging needs and operating system before choosing one.
What should you choose first?
Identify the workstation problem before selecting a device: screen position, laptop connections and workplace provision call for different checks.
| Priority | What to check | Your needs |
| Screen and input position |
Check the available desk space and whether a separate display or raised laptop lets you place the screen suitably. The Health and Safety Executive advises a separate keyboard and mouse when a laptop is raised for prolonged use. |
At a fixed desk, I may want a separate monitor; in a smaller space, I may prefer to raise the laptop while keeping its keyboard and mouse separate. |
| Dock and display compatibility |
Match the exact laptop and dock for video protocol, number of extended displays, resolution, refresh rate and charging. Lenovo says its USB-C docks depend on supported host protocols; Apple says external-display support varies by Mac model. |
I already have a suitable screen and regularly reconnect several devices. A dock is useful only if my laptop supports the arrangement I need. |
| Employer provision |
Review the workstation assessment and agree equipment, payment, support and IT approval before a personal purchase. In Great Britain, the Health and Safety Executive says workers cannot be charged for DSE equipment an assessment indicates the employer needs to provide. |
Before paying for work equipment myself, I want to know what my employer will provide and whether the device can be used on my work laptop. |
| Meeting devices |
Check the calling platform, connection type and employer-approved devices. Jabra distinguishes its Teams-certified Evolve2 65 variant from versions intended for other unified-communications platforms. |
If video calls are a regular part of my work, I want a webcam or headset that fits the meeting service and workplace rules, without treating it as a replacement for a suitable screen and input setup. |

Common questions
Do hybrid workers need to buy their own monitor or dock?
Not automatically. Start with the workstation assessment and the equipment needed at home and at work. In Great Britain, the Health and Safety Executive says a worker cannot be charged where an assessment indicates that the employer needs to provide DSE equipment; the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland also says assessments should identify individual needs and any additional home equipment required.
Can a laptop stand take the place of an external monitor?
It can be an alternative when the raised laptop screen suits your desk and you use a separate keyboard and mouse. The Health and Safety Executive advises separate input devices when elevating a laptop for prolonged use; a stand alone leaves the built-in controls raised with the screen.
Will any USB-C dock run two external monitors?
No: the required display arrangement depends on the exact laptop and dock. Check host video support, operating system, supported display count, resolution and refresh rate. Lenovo specifies host protocol requirements for its USB-C docks, while Apple says external-display capability varies by Mac model.
What should I check before buying a work webcam or headset?
Check your employer’s approved-device and security rules, then match the connection and headset variant to your laptop and meeting platform. Acas advises employers to agree technical support and information-security arrangements for home working; Jabra distinguishes its Teams-certified headset variant from versions intended for other calling platforms.
