Who is choosing?

Households sharing freezer snacks

If several people will have a cone, the number of servings in a pack matters. Check the volume of each cone too: six smaller cones and four larger ones serve different plans for the afternoon.

Shoppers choosing a portion size

A 90ml cone and a 140ml soft-serve-style cone are different-sized servings. Decide which size you want before comparing packs by their cone count alone.

Shoppers checking allergens

Check the exact current pack for declared allergens and separate may-contain statements. A dietary claim on one cone variant does not apply to every cone from that brand.

What matters when choosing?

Start with the number of snacks you want from the pack, then compare serving volume and the exact variant. Pack count alone cannot tell you whether the individual cone is the size you had in mind.

PriorityWhat to checkYour needs
Afternoon servings Count the cones in the pack. Check the volume per cone and whether you have suitable frozen storage. I want enough individual cones for the afternoons when we will eat them. In research conducted by PureSpectrum and commissioned by Carpigiani, 95% of UK respondents over 16 who had bought ice cream, gelato or sorbet from independent or high-street food outlets between June 2023 and June 2024 considered ice cream an afternoon snack, as reported by Catering Insight in January 2025. That out-of-home finding does not describe supermarket cone buyers.
Portion size Compare the stated ml per cone on the same volume basis. Tesco Groceries lists Cornetto Classico at six 90ml cones and Cornetto Soft Strawberry & Vanilla at four 140ml cones. A smaller cone may suit my plans for several separate snacks; at other times, I may want one larger cone. I would compare the serving, not just the size of the box.
Type of treat Check the named flavour and format on the exact variant. Consider its pack count alongside those features. Sometimes the style of treat matters more to me than getting the greatest number of cones in a pack. In the PureSpectrum research commissioned by Carpigiani, 50% of UK respondents over 16 who had bought ice cream, gelato or sorbet from independent or high-street food outlets between June 2023 and June 2024 cited indulgence as a reason for eating it out of home, according to Catering Insight. This is not a measure of supermarket cone preferences.
Dietary suitability Read the current pack’s ingredients, declared allergens and separate may-contain statement. Check any vegan or gluten-free claim on the individual variant. Before sharing cones, I need to check that each person can eat the particular product. ASDA Groceries lists milk, wheat and hazelnuts for Cornetto Classico; Tesco Groceries separately lists a Cornetto Non Dairy Vegan Gluten Free Vanilla variant. Those labels are not interchangeable.

What should you avoid assuming?

  • The pack with more cones always gives the serving you want

Pack count and individual volume answer different questions. ASDA Groceries lists Cornetto Classico as six 90ml cones, while Sainsbury’s lists its Taste the Difference Soft Serve Blueberry Cheesecake cones as four 140ml cones.

Decide how many separate snacks you need, then compare the stated ml per cone.

  • A familiar flavour tells you enough about allergens

ASDA Groceries lists milk, wheat and hazelnuts in Cornetto Classico, with a separate may-contain statement. Another cone or variant may have different labelling.

Read the ingredients and both allergen statements on the current pack before choosing for someone with dietary requirements.

  • Every ice cream cone has the same dietary claims

Tesco Groceries lists a specifically labelled Cornetto Non Dairy Vegan Gluten Free Vanilla cone alongside other Cornetto formats. A claim attached to that variant does not describe the whole range.

Match the claim to the full product name and check the individual pack.

  • One category label settles school-food or HFSS rules

The Food (Promotion and Placement) (England) Regulations 2021 concern certain in-scope less-healthy foods in England; a cone’s category name alone does not establish its status. Department for Education guidance addresses school food standards for state-funded schools in England, a separate setting from an ordinary retail snack.

If choosing food for a school setting, check the applicable nation, current school requirements and particular product rather than assuming a rule for every cone across the UK.

Which brands and ranges are relevant?

These examples show the formats listed by the named retailers and brands; they are not a substitute for checking the exact variant you choose.

Cornetto

Tesco Groceries lists Cornetto six-packs of 90ml cones, four-packs of 140ml Soft cones and a separately labelled Non Dairy Vegan Gluten Free Vanilla variant.

  • The listed formats offer different pack counts and serving volumes.
  • The variants do not share the same dietary labelling. ASDA Groceries lists milk, wheat and hazelnuts for Classico.

Tesco

Tesco Groceries lists several cone formats, including Cornetto Classico 6 x 90ml and Cornetto Soft Strawberry & Vanilla 4 x 140ml.

  • Its listed variants let shoppers compare both cone count and stated serving volume.
  • Check the individual listing and pack rather than applying one variant’s ingredients or claims to another.

Sainsbury's

Sainsbury’s lists Taste the Difference Soft Serve Blueberry Cheesecake Ice Cream Cones as four 140ml servings.

  • The stated 140ml serving provides a clear size point for comparison with 90ml cones.
  • Four cones provide fewer separate servings than a six-pack.

ASDA

ASDA Groceries lists Cornetto Classico as six 90ml cones.

  • The listing states both pack count and volume per cone.
  • It lists milk, wheat and hazelnuts, as well as a separate may-contain statement; check the current pack when allergens matter.

Common questions

Should I compare pack count or volume per cone?

Check both: pack count tells you how many separate snacks you have, while ml per cone tells you the stated size of each one. A six-pack of 90ml cones and a four-pack of 140ml cones answer different household needs.

Do allergens matter when a cone has a familiar flavour?

Yes. ASDA Groceries lists milk, wheat and hazelnuts for Cornetto Classico, plus a separate may-contain statement. Read the exact current pack’s ingredients and allergen information before choosing for someone with an allergy or coeliac disease.

Are all ice cream cones classed as HFSS?

The category name alone does not establish an individual cone’s status. The Food (Promotion and Placement) (England) Regulations 2021 apply to certain in-scope less-healthy products in England; any conclusion about a particular cone needs the applicable product and regulatory information.

Are cones automatically prohibited in school meals across the UK?

Do not apply an automatic UK-wide rule. Department for Education material sets out legal school food standards for state-funded schools in England, while rules and requirements for a particular school setting need to be checked in their own context. A retail cone’s category name does not settle that question.
