Who is each format for?

The equipment you already have is the starting point for a working-from-home lunch coffee.

Home workers with a kettle and mug

Instant coffee works without a capsule machine: add water and stir. NESCAFÉ describes this preparation method, while Kenco lists instant coffee among its formats.

People buying pods for an existing machine

Read the machine’s system name before choosing capsules. Tassimo uses official T DISCs, and Nespresso Original and Vertuo use different capsule families.

Pod users choosing a lunch-break drink

Once you know the compatible system, choose the drink you want. Tassimo lists Kenco Americano, flat white and decaf T DISCs; Nespresso Original includes smaller ristretto, espresso and lungo formats.

What should you check before buying?

Settle the format and machine match first, then compare the drink and what you will do with used pods.

Priority What to check Your needs
Equipment and format For instant coffee, check the preparation instructions. For pods, read the machine’s system name and match it to the capsule family before ordering. I only have a kettle and mug, so instant coffee fits my set-up. If I own a machine, I need pods made for that system.
Capsule compatibility Tassimo says its machines accept official T DISCs only. Nespresso says Original machines use Original pods and Vertuo pods fit Vertuo machines only. Dolce Gusto is a separate capsule system. I want to replace pods without mistaking a familiar coffee brand for a machine-compatibility label.
Drink and serving Check whether the compatible range offers your preferred black, milk-based or decaf drink. Nespresso UK lists 25 ml ristretto, 40 ml espresso and 110 ml lungo formats for Original capsules; check the individual pack for its intended serving. My usual lunch coffee might be a small espresso, a longer drink or decaf, so the drink matters as well as the machine match.
Used-pod collection Check the pod type and your postcode through Podback’s Recycling Checker. Northern Ireland’s Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs says coffee pods require separate collection rather than conventional recycling sorting. If I use pods regularly, I want to know how to collect and return the ones I use.

Common buying mistakes

  • Assuming all coffee pods fit the same machine

A pod labelled for another system may not be usable in your machine. Tassimo specifies official T DISCs, while Nespresso keeps Original and Vertuo capsules separate.

Check the system name on the appliance or manual against the pack before buying a multipack.

  • Treating instant coffee and capsules as interchangeable

Instant coffee is mixed with water; a capsule drink needs its matching machine. A pack of pods will not serve the same purpose as instant coffee when you only have a kettle.

Choose the preparation method first, then shop within that format.

  • Putting every used pod in household recycling

Northern Ireland’s Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs says pods are not suited to conventional recycling collection and sorting, so they require separate collection for recycling.

Use Podback’s Recycling Checker with your pod type and postcode, or follow the relevant brand’s collection instructions.

Brands and capsule systems

A brand name alone does not tell you whether a product is instant coffee or which machine will accept its capsules.

NESCAFÉ

NESCAFÉ has both instant coffee and Dolce Gusto capsules in its UK range. Choose by format, not just by brand.

  • NESCAFÉ describes its instant coffee as prepared by adding water and stirring.
  • Dolce Gusto capsules belong to a machine-based route, not the kettle-and-mug instant format.

Kenco

Kenco appears in both instant coffee ranges and Tassimo’s T DISC range.

  • Kenco lists instant jars, refills and decaf options; Tassimo lists Kenco Americano, flat white and decaf T DISCs.
  • A Kenco T DISC needs a Tassimo machine. It is not interchangeable with Kenco instant coffee.

Nespresso

Nespresso’s Original and Vertuo are separate capsule systems.

  • Nespresso UK lists ristretto, espresso and lungo serving formats for Original capsules.
  • Original machines use Original pods; Vertuo pods fit Vertuo machines only.

Tassimo

Tassimo uses its T DISC format for drinks that include Kenco coffee options.

  • Tassimo lists Kenco Americano, flat white and decaf T DISCs.
  • Tassimo says its machines work only with official T DISCs, not Nespresso or Dolce Gusto capsules.

Questions about instant coffee and pods

Can I use instant coffee as a coffee pod?

No: instant coffee is mixed with water, while capsules are used with a compatible machine. NESCAFÉ describes its instant coffee as a format you add water to and stir; do not put loose coffee into a pod machine unless its manufacturer provides instructions and an accessory for doing so.

How do I find pods that fit my machine?

Match the system name on the appliance or manual to the pack. Tassimo says its machines use official T DISCs only; Nespresso Original and Vertuo use separate capsule families, and Dolce Gusto is another distinct system.

Does Kenco make both instant coffee and pods?

Yes, in different formats. Kenco lists instant coffee including jars, refills and decaf, while Tassimo lists Kenco T DISCs; choose those pods only for a Tassimo machine.

Can used coffee pods go in household recycling?

Do not assume they can. Northern Ireland’s Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs says pods require separate collection for recycling because they are not suited to conventional collection and sorting. Podback’s Recycling Checker lets you check a route by pod type and postcode.
