Who is choosing the snack?

Carers looking for Fairtrade cocoa

The certification needs to apply to the exact pack. A different cocoa scheme or a retailer’s wider sourcing statement does not answer that question.

Carers choosing an occasional sweet snack

A wrapped portion may be convenient after school, but the number of cakes and the sugars stated for that serving still matter.

Families checking allergens or school arrangements

Read the current pack’s allergen information. If the snack is going into a school or after-school setting, check that setting’s food and allergy arrangements too.

What should you check?

Decide whether Fairtrade certification is a requirement before comparing portions. Then check the purchased pack and where the snack will be eaten.

PriorityWhat to checkYour needs
Fairtrade cocoa Look for an applicable Fairtrade mark on the exact pack and check which ingredient it covers. The Fairtrade Foundation says its Fairtrade Sourced Ingredient mark identifies a Fairtrade-sourced ingredient. If Fairtrade cocoa is essential to me, I would not treat a Rainforest Alliance cocoa statement or a general sourcing pledge as confirmation.
Serving size and sugars Compare the amount you intend to serve, using the same basis across products. McVitie’s states 5.4g sugars per ordinary cake and 16.3g per stated three-cake snack-pack serving; Waitrose states 12.8g per 25g serving of its mini cakes. A small cake or a separate wrapper does not tell me how much sugar is in the portion I plan to offer.
Allergens and setting Read the current pack’s ingredients and precautionary allergen wording. For food provided by a state-funded school in England, check the applicable school-food standards; the Department for Education’s current guidance excludes chocolate-coated products across the school day. If the snack is for a child with an allergy, or is going to school, I need the pack details and that setting’s arrangements before packing it.
Pack format Check cakes per wrapper and whether you need a portion that can travel. McVitie’s six-by-three snack pack has six wrapped servings of three cakes; an ordinary pack leaves the serving size to be decided at home. For a snack eaten away from home, a separate wrapper may be useful. At home, I can portion cakes from an ordinary pack.

Common buying mistakes

  • Reading any cocoa-sourcing statement as Fairtrade certification

The checked Sainsbury’s and Waitrose listings describe Rainforest Alliance cocoa, while the M&S listing carries a responsible-sourcing statement. Neither type of wording establishes a Fairtrade mark.

Inspect the exact pack for a Fairtrade mark and check whether an ingredient-specific mark names cocoa.

  • Comparing sugars on different serving bases

McVitie’s figures for one ordinary cake and a three-cake snack-pack serving cannot be compared as though both describe one cake. Waitrose gives its mini-cake figure per 25g serving.

Decide on the portion first, then compare its sugars or use the products’ per 100g figures on a like-for-like basis.

  • Applying home-snack advice to food supplied at school

The Department for Education’s English school-food guidance addresses chocolate-coated products provided during the school day. That is a different question from serving a snack at home or applying retail HFSS promotion rules.

If the food is going to school, establish who will provide it and check the school’s food and allergy policies.

Brand and own-label references

McVitie’s

Original chocolate-orange Jaffa cakes in ordinary and six-by-three snack-pack formats.

  • McVitie’s states 5.4g sugars per ordinary cake and 16.3g per stated three-cake snack-pack serving.
  • Its listed ingredients for the checked ordinary cakes include wheat, egg, milk and soya. Check the purchased variant’s pack for allergens and any Fairtrade mark.

Sainsbury’s

Own-label orange Jaffa cakes in a 150g pack.

  • The Sainsbury’s listing states 6.2g sugars per cake and describes its cocoa as Rainforest Alliance certified.
  • That cocoa statement does not establish Fairtrade certification. The listing identifies wheat and egg and warns of a milk-allergy risk due to manufacturing methods.

Waitrose

Own-label mini Jaffa cakes in a 125g pack.

  • The Waitrose listing states 12.8g sugars per 25g serving and describes the cocoa as Rainforest Alliance certified.
  • That is not a Fairtrade claim. The listing identifies wheat and egg and says the cakes may contain milk.

M&S

Dark Chocolate Orange Jaffa Cakes in a 125g pack listed by Ocado.

  • The Ocado listing relays M&S’s statement that it sources its cocoa responsibly.
  • That statement does not establish Fairtrade certification. The listing identifies wheat, egg and milk, and says the product is not suitable for people with nut or peanut allergy.

Questions about Jaffa cakes

Does Rainforest Alliance cocoa mean these Jaffa cakes are Fairtrade-certified?

No. The Rainforest Alliance cocoa statements on the checked Sainsbury’s and Waitrose listings do not establish Fairtrade certification. Check the exact pack for an applicable Fairtrade mark and, if it identifies a sourced ingredient, whether that ingredient is cocoa.

How can I compare sugars in ordinary, snack-pack and mini Jaffa cakes?

Compare the portion you intend to serve, or use per 100g figures for a like-for-like product comparison. McVitie’s states 5.4g sugars per ordinary cake and 16.3g per three-cake snack-pack serving; Waitrose states 12.8g per 25g serving of its mini cakes.

Can I pack Jaffa cakes for an after-school activity?

Check the activity’s food and allergy arrangements first, including whether the snack is parent-supplied or provided by the school. The checked cakes contain wheat, while other allergen declarations vary by variant; use the current physical pack when checking suitability for a child.

Can an English school provide chocolate-coated Jaffa cakes?

The Department for Education’s current school-food guidance for state-funded schools in England excludes chocolate and chocolate-coated products across the school day. This concerns food provided under those English standards, not a parent serving a snack at home. Proposed changes for September 2027 were subject to Parliamentary approval as at October 2026.

Do Jaffa cakes need preparation or special storage?

The checked cakes are ready to eat. McVitie’s and Sainsbury’s advise cool, dry storage, and the checked Sainsbury’s listing advises an airtight container after opening. Follow the instructions on the pack you buy.
