Who needs to assess their setup?

People using a laptop for prolonged home work

If the laptop is your only screen and input device, consider how its screen and keyboard positions work together. HSE guidance for prolonged laptop use points to separate keyboard and mouse input when elevating the screen, or to a separate display.

Hybrid workers with two regular workstations

A home desk and an office desk may need different arrangements. HSE says an applicable DSE assessment for someone working at home and in the office should cover both situations.

People connecting several desk devices

If you regularly connect displays, wired peripherals or a network cable, check your laptop’s ports and display support before choosing a hub or dock. Microsoft, Apple and dock manufacturers describe capabilities that depend on the particular host device and connection.

What should you check before choosing?

Work out the screen and input arrangement first, then check connections and any applicable workstation assessment before choosing equipment.

Priority What to check Your needs
Screen and input position For prolonged laptop use, HSE advises a separate keyboard and mouse so the laptop screen can be raised on a riser, or a separate display. Check that the desk accommodates the resulting arrangement. I need to position the screen without having to use an elevated built-in keyboard and trackpad.
External display Match the laptop’s video output to the monitor input and cable. Check the supported display count, resolution and refresh rate for the exact laptop; Apple says Mac display capacity varies by model and display configuration. A second screen would be useful, but I need to know it will connect and work in my intended layout.
Dock connections Check the laptop’s USB-C, USB4 or Thunderbolt capabilities against the dock’s host requirements. Confirm display modes, charging needs, operating-system support and the specified host cable; a USB-C connector alone does not establish these functions. I regularly connect several devices at one desk and want the connection to support the displays and peripherals I actually use.
DSE assessment Where UK DSE rules apply, check the individual assessment for each regular work setting before deciding what to obtain personally. HSE says workers cannot be charged for equipment an assessment identifies as needed. Before buying, I want to distinguish a personal upgrade from equipment identified through my workstation assessment.
Calls and lighting Consider a webcam, headset or task light where the work calls for one. Check how lighting falls on the screen and desk; HSE advises adequate lighting and an arrangement that avoids uncomfortable working positions. Video calls, audio privacy or lighting at my particular desk may need attention after the screen and input setup is considered.

Common buying mistakes

  • Buying a riser without separate input devices

Raising a laptop also raises its built-in keyboard and trackpad. That does not provide the prolonged-use arrangement described in HSE’s laptop guidance.

Check that a separate keyboard and mouse will fit and connect, or consider a separate-display arrangement instead.

  • Assuming every USB-C port has the same functions

The connector shape does not establish whether a laptop supports the dock’s video, charging or USB4 features. Microsoft notes that USB-C hardware and software combinations can have limited functionality.

Compare the exact laptop model, cable and intended display setup with the dock manufacturer’s host requirements.

  • Buying before checking the workstation assessment

For workers covered by UK DSE arrangements, HSE says an applicable assessment should address both home and office work where both are regular settings. Its outcome determines what action is needed for that workstation.

Identify the setup problem and check the relevant assessment process before purchasing equipment personally. HSE says a worker cannot be charged for DSE equipment the assessment identifies as needed.

  • Reading a dock’s display figure as universal

Supported displays can depend on the laptop and connection. Kensington’s SD5760T documentation, for example, states dual-display modes but limits some laptop categories to one external display.

Check the dock documentation against your laptop model, operating system and intended number of monitors.

Brand and model references

These manufacturer examples illustrate features and compatibility questions to examine; they do not establish what every product from a brand can do.

Dell

A reference for comparing a fixed external monitor with built-in desk connections.

  • Dell UK lists the Pro 24 Plus USB-C Hub Monitor P2425HE with a 23.8-inch, 1920 × 1080 display, RJ45 Ethernet and up to 90W power delivery.
  • Check the laptop’s video connection and charging requirements before relying on those model-specific functions.

Kensington

A reference for a fixed desk that needs a Thunderbolt or USB4 docking connection.

  • Kensington UK lists the SD5760T with Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 3 and USB4 host support, up to 96W power delivery and specified dual-display modes.
  • Kensington also specifies single-external-display limits for some laptop categories. Check the exact host and operating-system configuration.

Logitech

A reference when choosing separate keyboard and mouse input for a raised laptop screen or external display.

  • Logitech UK describes the MX Keys S Combo as a keyboard, MX Master 3S mouse and palm-rest bundle.
  • Check its connection method, keyboard layout and desk fit. A manufacturer’s comfort claims do not establish how the complete workstation will suit an individual.

Questions about home-work setups

When might a UK home or hybrid worker need a DSE assessment?

HSE says the DSE Regulations can apply to permanent or long-term home workers and people who routinely split work between home and their workplace. Where they apply, the workstation assessment should address the relevant work settings and identify any action needed.

Is a laptop riser enough for prolonged laptop work?

A riser alone does not create the laptop arrangement described by HSE for prolonged use. HSE advises a separate keyboard and mouse so the screen can be elevated; a separate display is another arrangement to consider.

What should I check before buying a USB-C dock?

Check your exact laptop’s port capabilities, supported displays and charging requirements against the dock’s host requirements, operating-system support and specified cable. Microsoft notes that USB-C hardware and software combinations can have limited functionality, so the connector shape is not enough to confirm compatibility.

Will any USB-C Mac run two external displays through a dock?

No. Apple says external-display capacity depends on the Mac model and the connected displays’ resolution and refresh rate. Its documented two-display arrangement for MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models with an M3 chip has conditions including a closed lid, external input devices, power and a specified macOS version; check the instructions for your exact model.

Does a DisplayLink dock require extra setup on a Mac?

A dock based on DisplayLink technology can require it. DisplayLink says its Manager application is required for its macOS products and needs system permissions, including Screen Recording permission, to operate correctly.
