Who is this setup for?

Regular home laptop workers

If you work at a desk on a laptop for prolonged periods, screen and input-device positions become a joint setup decision. The Health and Safety Executive describes using a separate keyboard and mouse so the laptop screen can be raised, or using a separate display.

Hybrid workers setting up a repeatable desk

If you move between home and another workplace, consider which connections you will need to make each time and whether your display arrangement works with the laptop you carry. For context, the Office for National Statistics reported that 28% of working adults in Great Britain hybrid worked between January and March 2025; that figure does not measure demand for accessories.

People using multiple windows or screens

If documents, applications and calls compete for screen space, check how many external displays your exact laptop supports before choosing a monitor or dock. Apple Support directs Mac users to check their model’s ports and display limit; Microsoft Support explains how to arrange supported external displays in Windows.

What should you check first?

Decide whether you need to reposition the laptop screen, add display space or connect several devices through one port. Then check the connections required by that arrangement.

PriorityWhat to checkYour needs
Screen and input position Check that a stand supports the laptop’s size and leaves its ventilation unobstructed. Pair a raised laptop with a separately positioned keyboard and mouse, as described in Health and Safety Executive guidance. I work on the laptop’s own screen for long stretches and want to position it without having to type on a raised keyboard.
Extra display space Check the laptop’s supported display count and video output, the monitor’s input and the required cable or adapter. Confirm the intended extended or mirrored arrangement for the exact laptop and operating system. Several documents or applications need to stay visible at once; I need to know whether an external screen will work with my laptop.
Desk connections List the devices connected each day. For a dock, check the host port’s capabilities, display modes and power delivery against both the dock and laptop requirements. Connecting a monitor and several other devices every time I sit down makes a single laptop connection worth considering.
Home-working pattern Consider how often the desk is used and whether accessories must travel with the laptop. A monitor needs a suitable desk position and power; a direct monitor connection may be enough without a dock. My setup has to fit the time I spend working at home, whether I leave it assembled or pack it away regularly.

Common buying mistakes

  • Raising the laptop but using its built-in keyboard

Moving the screen also moves the keyboard and trackpad. The Health and Safety Executive describes a separate keyboard and mouse alongside an elevated laptop screen.

Plan the stand and input devices together for prolonged desk use, and check how the keyboard and mouse connect to your laptop.

A stand may leave you needing a separate keyboard and mouse to complete the arrangement.

  • Assuming every USB-C port handles video and charging

The connector’s shape does not establish a laptop’s display limit or a dock’s available functions. Anker’s A210B documentation, for example, sets host-port requirements and describes different external-display behaviour on Windows and macOS.

Check the exact laptop model, intended port, monitor inputs, cables and charging requirements against the dock’s documentation.

A cable, adapter or power supply that does not meet the required connection may need replacing.

  • Adding a dock for a single monitor by default

One monitor can connect directly when the laptop has a compatible video output and the correct cable or adapter. A dock is more relevant when you also connect other desk devices regularly.

List your daily connections before choosing between a direct cable and a dock.

  • Applying one model’s display claims to another setup

Monitor, dock and charging capabilities depend on the product model and the laptop, cable and operating-system configuration used with it.

Match the claimed function to the exact accessory and laptop models, particularly if you plan to run more than one external display.

Relevant brand ranges

These brand ranges illustrate different accessory categories; a range description does not establish compatibility for a particular product.

Logitech

Logitech lists keyboards, mice and combinations for business desks, including wired and ergonomic options.

  • Its UK business range offers several ways to add separate input devices to a raised-laptop setup.
  • Check the chosen model’s layout, connection method and operating-system compatibility; the range description does not settle these for every device.

Dell

Dell offers monitors for fixed desks, including models that combine a display with USB-C connectivity.

  • Dell specifies a 27-inch, 1920 × 1080 display and up to 100W power delivery for its Pro P2726HE hub monitor.
  • Those are P2726HE specifications, not Dell-wide features. Check whether the laptop supports the intended video, data and charging connection.

Anker

Anker lists docks and hubs for connecting displays and desk peripherals through a laptop connection.

  • Its dock range includes different USB-C, DisplayLink and Thunderbolt-oriented connection approaches.
  • Display behaviour is model-dependent: Anker says its A210B shows separate content on external monitors in Windows but mirrors the same content on macOS. Check the host requirements for the exact dock.

Frequently asked questions

Is a laptop stand enough for regular desk work?

A stand alone leaves the built-in keyboard and trackpad on the raised laptop. For prolonged use, the Health and Safety Executive describes pairing an elevated laptop screen with a separate keyboard and mouse, or using a separate display.

Do I need a dock for one external monitor?

Not necessarily: a compatible laptop video output and the correct cable or adapter may allow a direct connection. Consider a dock when you also need to connect several other devices or charging through one laptop connection, and check its host requirements first.

Can any USB-C laptop run two extended external monitors?

No. Check the exact laptop’s external-display limit and the dock’s operating-system requirements. Apple Support notes model-specific Mac display support; Anker says its A210B provides separate external-monitor content on Windows but mirrors the same content on macOS.

What should I check after connecting another monitor in Windows?

Check the physical connection, then use Windows display settings to identify and arrange the connected screens. Microsoft Support explains how to adjust settings for external displays after connecting them to a Windows 11 PC.
