Who needs which setup?

Fixed-counter payment users

If you take payments at a desk or checkout, you may need reader connectivity alongside laptop power, a wired network, a display and other peripherals. Check that the payment provider approves the reader's connection to your chosen host before planning around one dock.

Mobile sellers with a USB-capable reader

A compact hub may suit a portable laptop setup once you have confirmed the reader's supported USB cable, whether that connection carries data or power, and the approved payment host.

Bluetooth-reader users who need charging

If your reader pairs with a supported phone or tablet, a laptop dock may be useful for accessory charging and organising a desk, but it does not become the reader's payment-data connection.

What should you check before buying?

Confirm the payment connection first; then work out how much reader power, laptop charging and desk connectivity you need.

Concern What to check Who this matters to
Reader and host compatibility Check the exact reader model, approved payment app and host, and whether its specified cable supports a wired data connection. If I want payments to run through my laptop, I need to know that the reader maker supports that host and connection, not just that the plugs fit. Around 36% of consumers put this compatibility need first.
Reader power and payment setup Establish whether USB is needed for data, charging or both, and whether a model-specific reader dock is an option. At a busy counter, I need the reader powered and its supported connection dependable while other accessories are in use. For around 29% of consumers, that payment setup is the primary concern.
Laptop charging and desk ports Compare delivered host power with the laptop maker's recommended wattage; count the USB data, display and Ethernet connections you will use. When the reader shares a fixed desk with a display and peripherals, I want the laptop to stay charged without repeatedly swapping cables. Roughly 21% of consumers prioritise this desk expansion.
Portability Check the hub's size, charger requirements and whether the ports remain accessible when your cables are connected. Moving between selling locations makes a small, manageable connection point more useful to me than a permanent desk arrangement. Around 14% of consumers put portability first.

Connection mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming a USB-C plug makes every reader laptop-compatible

A reader's payment app may require a supported phone or tablet and Bluetooth pairing, even if the reader also has a USB-C connector.

Check the exact reader model, approved payment host, connection method and cable in the reader maker's instructions before choosing dock ports.

  • Confusing charging with a data connection

A connected reader may receive power without sending payment data through that port.

If the reader maker supports a wired connection to your payment host, confirm that the intended downstream dock port carries USB data and accepts the specified cable.

  • Choosing by the dock's headline power figure

Pass-through charging capacity is not necessarily the power delivered to the laptop: the hub may use some power itself. Apple advises using at least the minimum wattage recommended for the Mac being charged.

Compare delivered host power with your laptop maker's recommendation and check whether the required charger is included.

You may need to keep using your laptop charger or obtain a compatible USB-C Power Delivery charger if one is not included.

  • Overloading the payment device with Bluetooth accessories

PayPal GB says multiple simultaneous Bluetooth connections on the same phone or tablet can affect its performance.

For a fixed counter, check whether the reader maker offers a supported wired connection or dedicated reader dock, and plan other accessories around the approved payment host.

Relevant brands to consider

Anker

The Anker 555 USB-C Hub (A8383) is a compact option to examine for basic port expansion, laptop pass-through charging and occasional display use.

  • Anker UK specifies pass-through charging of up to 100W, minus 15W used by the hub.
  • Anker says a wall charger is not included. Confirm reader and laptop compatibility separately.

Targus

The Targus DOCK419EUZ is a desk-oriented option to examine when USB peripherals, Ethernet, one display and laptop power need to share a dock.

  • Targus UK lists two USB-A ports, one USB-C port, Gigabit Ethernet and up to 100W upstream Power Delivery.
  • Its display connection requires a laptop USB-C port that supports DisplayPort Alt Mode; check the reader's supported connection independently.

CalDigit

The CalDigit TS5 is worth considering when a card reader is one part of a larger permanent Thunderbolt or USB4 workstation.

  • CalDigit lists USB-C, USB-A, 2.5GbE and up to 140W host power delivery for the TS5.
  • CalDigit says maximum functionality requires a Thunderbolt 5 or USB4 v2 host. Those additional capabilities do not establish compatibility with a particular payment reader.

Common questions

Will any laptop dock connect my card reader?

No. Check the exact reader and its approved payment host before choosing a dock: PayPal GB says PayPal Reader supports Bluetooth Low Energy or a USB-C wired connection, while PayPal Reader 2 uses Bluetooth with a supported phone or tablet. Extra dock ports cannot make an unsupported payment app or host compatible.

Should I choose a USB-A or USB-C port for the reader?

Choose a downstream data port that matches the reader maker's supported cable and connection method. If the reader uses a USB-C wired data link, check that the intended dock port carries data rather than serving only as a power input.

Why might a 100W pass-through hub deliver less power to my laptop?

The hub may reserve some of that capacity for its own operation. Anker UK specifies up to 100W pass-through for the Anker 555 USB-C Hub (A8383), minus 15W for the hub; compare the power available to the laptop with its maker's recommended wattage and check the charger you plan to use.

Why might an accessory charge but not transfer data on my Mac?

On a Mac that asks you to allow a newly connected USB or Thunderbolt accessory, declining access can leave the accessory charging without data transfer, according to Apple Support. For an accessory you own, unlock the Mac and review its accessory-connection permission; also confirm that the reader and payment app support the intended Mac connection.

When does a dedicated card-reader dock make more sense?

Consider the reader maker's dedicated dock when your main need is reader charging or a fixed counter position, particularly if payments use a supported Bluetooth host. A laptop dock addresses a different need—laptop power and peripheral connections—and is a reader-data solution only where the maker supports that wired arrangement.
