Who needs an external monitor?

An external screen is most useful when it solves a specific limitation of working from a laptop at a fixed desk, rather than simply adding another device.

Document and multitasking home workers

If documents, spreadsheets, browser tabs and calls compete for space on a laptop screen, a separate display gives you another place to arrange them. Which? identifies home offices, studies and kitchen-table workspaces as settings for monitor selection.

Single-cable laptop users

A USB-C connection may carry the display signal and, on suitable equipment, charge the laptop. Check the exact laptop port and its charging requirement before planning around one cable; Microsoft Support notes that USB-C-compatible cables do not all support the same features.

Space-constrained study and call users

On a smaller desk, screen dimensions and the stand’s footprint may matter as much as display format. If you also make frequent calls, check whether the particular monitor includes the webcam, microphone or speakers you intend to use.

What matters when choosing?

Decide how much visible workspace you need, then check the desk fit and the complete connection from laptop to monitor before choosing a cable or dock.

Concern What to check Who this matters to
Visible workspace Compare the screen format with the documents and windows you use together. Measure desk width before considering an ultrawide screen. If I regularly keep documents and applications open together, I need enough visible room to work without constant switching. About 42% of consumers would make usable screen space their primary concern.
Connection and charging Check the laptop’s video-output port and supported displays against the monitor input. For USB-C charging, compare the laptop’s requirement with the monitor’s power delivery. I want the screen to work with my actual laptop, particularly if I expect one cable to handle video and charging. Connection certainty would come first for about 33% of consumers.
Desk fit and calls Measure the space for the display and stand. If calls are important, confirm the exact model’s webcam, microphone and speakers. With a crowded desk and regular calls, I would prioritise a screen that fits and has the call features I need. For about 25% of consumers, that compact, call-ready setup would be the main concern.

A 23.8–24-inch Full HD display is one compact route. Dell specifies a 27-inch, 2560 × 1440 QHD panel for its S2725DC, while LG specifies 3440 × 1440 for its 34BA75QE-B ultrawide. These examples illustrate different layouts, not a reason to assume that a larger screen will fit your desk or that your laptop can drive its resolution.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming every USB-C connection carries video and charges the laptop

A matching connector shape does not establish video support, and charging depends on the power available and what the laptop accepts. Microsoft Support also cautions that USB-C-compatible cables do not necessarily support every feature.

Check the exact laptop model’s video-output and charging specifications, then compare them with the monitor, dock and cable you plan to use.

If those requirements do not match, the setup may need a different cable or adapter, or the laptop may still need its own charger.

  • Choosing an adapter before checking both ends

An adapter selected only by the laptop connector may not provide the connection needed at the monitor. The laptop’s supported display configuration matters too.

Identify the laptop output and monitor input, then check that the proposed cable or adapter supports the display configuration you want. Use a direct matching connection where practical.

  • Buying an ultrawide screen before measuring the desk

A wider canvas can accommodate broad spreadsheets or several windows, but the screen and stand still need room alongside the laptop and its cables.

Measure usable desk width and depth before deciding whether an ultrawide, conventional QHD or smaller Full HD display fits your workspace.

  • Expecting call and adjustment features on every monitor

LG lists a webcam, microphone, speakers and an adjustable stand for its 27BA850-B; those features should not be assumed on another model.

Check the exact monitor’s features and box contents if you need a webcam, speakers, a USB hub or particular stand adjustments.

A setup without the features you need may require separate peripherals or a different positioning arrangement.

Brands and models to consider

These examples show features to compare on specific monitor lines; they are not promises that every model from a brand has the same connections or desk fit.

Dell

Dell’s S2725DC is an example of a conventional 27-inch QHD USB-C monitor for a fixed laptop workspace.

  • Dell lists a 2560 × 1440 IPS display and an adjustable stand for the S2725DC.
  • Check the connections, charging specification and physical dimensions of the exact Dell model you choose; the S2725DC’s features do not apply across the range.

BenQ

BenQ’s GW2486TC is a 23.8-inch USB-C home-office option for someone considering a smaller second screen.

  • BenQ specifies USB-C data transfer, up to 65W power delivery and height, pivot, swivel and tilt adjustment for this model.
  • For the GW2486TC’s daisy-chain route, BenQ says Apple computers require a Thunderbolt dock or another suitable device. Check your laptop’s display support before planning multiple screens.

LG

LG’s cited business monitors illustrate two different needs: integrated call equipment on the 27BA850-B and a wider canvas on the 34BA75QE-B.

  • LG lists a webcam, microphone and speakers for the 27BA850-B, and a 3440 × 1440 display for the 34BA75QE-B.
  • Confirm the exact model’s ports, USB-C charging output and dimensions rather than treating either set of features as standard across LG monitors.

Common questions

Will any laptop USB-C port work with a USB-C monitor?

No: check whether the exact port supports video output before using it for a display. Microsoft Support also notes that USB-C-compatible cables do not necessarily support every feature, so check the cable as well as the laptop and monitor.

Can a USB-C monitor replace my laptop charger?

It can do so only when the laptop accepts charging through that port and the monitor supplies suitable USB-C Power Delivery. Compare their wattage specifications; Microsoft’s Surface guidance advises using a USB-C PD supply that provides at least the wattage of the device’s designed power supply.

Do I need a dock for one external monitor?

Not necessarily: a suitable direct cable can be enough when the laptop output and monitor input match. Consider an adapter for different connectors or a dock when you need additional display, USB or network connections, after checking what your laptop supports.

Can I connect more than one external display to a Mac laptop?

Check the exact Mac model’s Display Support or Video Support specification for its supported number of screens and connections. Apple says these capabilities vary by device; BenQ also specifies an additional suitable device for the GW2486TC’s daisy-chain route with Apple computers.
