Who needs this setup?

Countertop recipe followers

If you read from a laptop while cooking, raising its screen can keep the recipe closer to your natural line of sight than leaving it flat on the worktop. University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust advises placing the top of a workstation screen at eye level; in a kitchen, Electrical Safety First also advises keeping laptops away from liquids and heat.

Shared-kitchen households

When different people use the same recipe screen, or the laptop moves between worktops, a height-adjustable stand gives you a way to change its position. Check the adjustment range and fit against the laptop you will actually use.

Small-space or portable cooks

If the worktop needs to be cleared after cooking, folded size matters alongside viewing height. A stand that travels between rooms also needs to fit the laptop securely each time it is set up.

What matters when choosing a stand?

Start with the position of your own laptop screen on the worktop, then check device fit and the space the stand will occupy. Treat fold-away storage as a further requirement if the setup cannot stay out between meals.

Concern What to check Who this matters to
Screen position Measure the lift needed to bring the top of your open laptop screen near eye level; compare it with the stand’s stated screen lift, not just its overall height. Check the viewing angle for glare. If my worktop or viewing position changes, I need room to adjust the recipe screen rather than accept one fixed height. Around 45% of consumers would put screen position first.
Fit and worktop space Check your laptop against the stand’s width, weight and other fit limits. Measure its base footprint on a clear part of the worktop. For a regular recipe-reading spot, I want the laptop to fit securely without taking over preparation space. Roughly 33% of consumers would make fit and placement their primary concern.
Storage and movement Compare folded dimensions and weight with the drawer or bag you intend to use, and confirm the stand still reaches a useful viewing height. When I clear the counter after cooking or move the laptop between rooms, I need a stand I can put away easily. Around 22% of consumers would prioritise storage and movement.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing by stand height alone

A stand’s height does not tell you exactly where the top of your laptop display will sit. That position also depends on the open laptop and the worktop.

Measure from the worktop to your eye level in the position where you read recipes, then compare the lift you need with the stand’s stated range.

  • Using a raised keyboard for long typing sessions

Raising the screen also raises the built-in keyboard, which may not suit extended typing. University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust advises using a separate keyboard when a laptop screen is raised for workstation use.

Use the laptop mainly as a recipe display, or leave room for a separate keyboard and mouse if it will also serve as a workstation.

  • Treating the kitchen worktop like a desk

Electrical Safety First identifies water, hot surfaces and trailing leads as kitchen hazards, and advises keeping laptops away from liquids and heat.

Choose a dry position away from the sink and hob. Keep the charger and lead clear of the cooking area, and do not handle electrical equipment with wet hands.

  • Assuming a folding stand fits every laptop

Some stands have device-specific fit requirements. Roost’s fitting guide, for example, specifies a laptop front edge thinner than 0.75 inches (1.9 cm).

Compare your exact laptop dimensions and edge shape with the manufacturer’s fitting instructions before ordering.

Laptop stand brands to consider

Twelve South

Twelve South makes the adjustable Curve Flex desktop stand. Its fold-flat design is worth considering when a recipe setup changes position or needs to be stored after use.

  • Twelve South states that Curve Flex can raise a MacBook screen and camera up to 22 inches, adjust the keyboard angle from 0 to 45 degrees, and fold flat with a supplied travel sleeve.
  • Check its stated minimum laptop width of 8.66 inches, maximum laptop weight of 7 lb and footprint against your device and worktop. Confirm availability for the listing you intend to use.

Rain Design

Rain Design’s mStand is a fixed-height aluminium stand for a desktop-style position.

  • Rain Design specifies a 5.9-inch stand height and a 7.5 × 10-inch base, and describes it as fitting MacBooks and most notebooks.
  • Its height cannot be adjusted. Measure where your own screen will sit on your worktop before choosing a fixed lift.

Roost

Roost makes folding laptop stands for setups that move between locations or need compact storage.

  • Roost specifies seven height settings, a 6.5–12.5-inch screen lift and a weight of 178 g for the Roost V3.
  • Roost’s fitting guide requires a laptop front edge thinner than 0.75 inches (1.9 cm). Check that fit, along with the available delivery terms, before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

How high should a laptop stand be for reading recipes?

Choose a height that puts the top of your own laptop screen around eye level, rather than relying on a universal stand height. University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust gives eye level as a workstation screen-position target; measure your worktop and open laptop to find the lift your setup needs.

Will a fixed-height stand work, or do I need adjustment?

A fixed-height stand can work for one measured laptop and recipe-reading position. Adjustment is more useful if the user, worktop or laptop changes; Rain Design’s mStand is fixed at a stated 5.9-inch height, while Twelve South describes Curve Flex as adjustable.

Can I type while the laptop is raised?

Quick recipe navigation may be manageable on the built-in keyboard, but plan for a separate keyboard and mouse if you will type for longer. University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust advises a separate keyboard when raising a laptop screen for workstation use.

Where should the stand go on a kitchen worktop?

Put it in a dry, stable position away from the sink, hob, steam and splashes, with the lead clear of the cooking area. Electrical Safety First warns that kitchens bring electrical equipment close to water, hot surfaces and trailing cables, and advises keeping laptops away from liquids and heat.
