A low profile car jack is defined by its minimum saddle height when fully collapsed. Generally, any jack with a minimum height under 100mm (or 4 inches) is considered low profile. This design allows it to slide under vehicles with low ground clearance, such as sports cars, performance saloons and modified vehicles, where a standard jack would not fit.
To determine the right capacity, first find your vehicle's Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) in the owner's manual or on the sticker inside the driver's door jamb. A jack only lifts one corner or end of the car at a time, which is typically 50-70% of the total weight. For a safe margin, choose a jack with a rated capacity that is at least 1.5 times the weight it will be lifting. For example, for a 2-ton car, a 1.5-ton jack is often sufficient, but a 2.5 or 3 ton car jack offers greater stability and safety.
