Who is this for?

Hosts comparing calories

If you are putting out a sharing bowl, compare kcal per 100g across bags and use the labelled portion to help plan how much to serve. The NHS notes that a manufacturer’s portion may differ from yours.

Hosts serving dips or toppings

If chips are part of a dip station or loaded nachos, plan the chips and toppings separately: the chip’s nutrition panel does not describe the finished serving.

Hosts catering for dietary restrictions

If guests have allergies or other dietary requirements, check the ingredients, allergen advice and suitability statements on each exact pack you intend to serve.

What should you check?

Start with a like-for-like calorie comparison, then work out the portions and check the other label details that matter for your guests.

PriorityWhat to checkYour needs
Calories and portions Compare kcal per 100g, then check kcal per stated portion, pack weight and servings per pack. The NHS notes that labelled portions may differ from what you serve. I want to compare bags fairly, then decide how much to put in the party bowl rather than treating a serving suggestion as a fixed amount.
Salt Read salt per 100g alongside calories; a lightly salted name is not a substitute for the nutrition panel. M&S lists 1.10g salt per 100g for its Cantina chips. Calories matter to me, but I also want to see how the salt figures compare before choosing a bag.
Dips and toppings Check whether the nutrition figures cover chips alone, then account separately for any dips or loaded toppings you serve. I’m serving chips with other food and want to plan the whole plate, not just the amount of tortilla chips.
Guest suitability Check the exact pack’s ingredients, allergen advice and any vegan or gluten-free statement. Recheck when buying a different flavour. Some guests have dietary requirements, so I need packaging I can inspect and a product that meets their stated needs.

Common buying mistakes

  • Using “lightly salted” as a calorie guide

The five plain or lightly salted products compared here range from 466 to 494kcal per 100g on their M&S, Waitrose, ASDA, Tesco and Sainsbury’s listings. The flavour description does not tell you where a bag falls in that range.

Compare kcal per 100g first, then check the labelled portion and pack weight for your party plan.

  • Counting the chips but not what goes with them

The listed 141kcal per 30g serving for Doritos Dip or Load, according to Waitrose, describes the chips—not a serving with dip or toppings.

Plan the amount of dip and toppings separately, and let guests assemble their own portions if that suits your spread.

  • Assuming a corn-based chip suits every guest

A corn base or dietary claim does not settle every allergy question. Ingredient and precautionary allergen statements can differ between products and flavours.

Ask guests what they need, check each current pack and keep the packaging available when serving.

  • Choosing a festive shape for its presumed calorie content

Tesco lists its Christmas Tree Tortilla at 491kcal per 100g. Its shape does not establish a lower calorie figure than a standard chip.

If presentation appeals, compare the current nutrition label and check whether you can get the product before planning the spread around it.

Brand and retailer references

These label examples concern specific products, not every tortilla chip sold by each brand or retailer.

M&S

Cantina Tortilla Chips are a 150g option for a dipping spread.

  • M&S lists 466kcal per 100g for Cantina, the lowest figure among the five plain or lightly salted products compared here.
  • The same label lists 1.10g salt per 100g; compare salt separately from calories.

Doritos

The range includes the Dip or Load sharing format and a separate Lightly Salted product.

  • Waitrose lists Dip or Load at 471kcal per 100g, with 7–8 servings in its 230g bag.
  • Tesco lists Doritos Lightly Salted at 487kcal per 100g, so check the exact variant rather than using one Doritos figure for both.

ASDA

ASDA Lightly Salted Tortilla Chips come in a 180g own-label bag.

  • ASDA lists 477kcal per 100g and suggests eight servings per pack.
  • Use the current pack label when checking ingredients and nutrition for guests.

Sainsbury’s

Sainsbury’s lists an own-label 200g tortilla-chip bag.

  • Its listing gives both a per-100g figure and a 30g portion figure for planning servings.
  • At 494kcal per 100g and 148kcal per 30g, it has a higher listed calorie figure than the other four products in the plain or lightly salted comparison.

Tesco

Tesco lists a seasonal Christmas Tree Tortilla as well as other tortilla chips.

  • The Christmas-tree shape offers a presentation choice for a party.
  • Tesco lists that product at 491kcal per 100g; check current stock and its label before choosing it.

Waitrose

Waitrose lists both Doritos Dip or Load and a distinct Mister Free’d Blue tortilla-chip product.

  • Its Dip or Load listing states 141kcal per 30g, which can help with portion planning.
  • Waitrose lists Mister Free’d Blue at 521kcal per 100g: its gluten-free positioning does not mean it has fewer calories.

Questions about choosing tortilla chips

How do I compare calories between different-sized bags?

Compare kcal per 100g first, then use the labelled portion and pack size to plan what you will serve. The NHS notes that a manufacturer’s portion may not match the amount you take from a sharing bowl.

Does “lightly salted” mean fewer calories or little salt?

No: check both figures on the nutrition panel. The plain or lightly salted products compared using M&S, Waitrose, ASDA, Tesco and Sainsbury’s listings range from 466 to 494kcal per 100g, so the name alone cannot settle the calorie comparison.

Are corn tortilla chips suitable for guests with allergies?

Do not assume so from the corn base. Ask guests what they need and read the ingredients and precautionary allergen advice on the exact current pack; different products and flavours need separate checks.
