Who is this choice for?

Busy solo diners comparing fat content

A single-portion meal can fit a short evening cooking window. Compare total fat and saturates for the prepared pack, then check whether its microwave instructions suit your appliance.

Shoppers interested in protein and vegetables

If those are your meal-content priorities, read their stated amounts alongside fat, saturates and salt. A high-protein label does not describe the whole nutrition panel.

Shoppers who compare labels

Traffic-light information and nutrition claims can help you start a shortlist. The portion size, full nutrition panel, ingredients and allergen information help you decide between meals.

What should you check?

Start with the portion you expect to eat, then check how the meal is cooked and what else its label tells you.

PriorityWhat to checkWhat matters to me
Fat and salt Compare total fat, saturates and salt for the whole prepared pack. Check the stated portion if packs contain different numbers of servings. I want a lower-fat dinner without overlooking salt. Sainsbury's lists 4.0g fat and 1.18g salt per microwaved pack of its Calorie Counted Chicken Tikka Masala; its salt traffic-light rating is medium.
Cooking time Read the instructions for your microwave wattage, including any stirring and standing steps. Confirm that the pack permits cooking from frozen. A meal needs to fit both my available time and the microwave I will use; a time stated for another wattage may not apply.
Protein and contents Compare protein on the same prepared-portion basis as fat and salt. Read the meal description and ingredients to see what is in the portion. If protein or vegetables are a priority, I still want to know the fat and salt in the complete meal. Waitrose's listing for Birds Eye Get Real Protein Thai Red Chicken Curry states 35g protein and 368kcal.
Claims and allergens Use front-of-pack wording as a starting point, then read the nutrition panel and allergen information on the specific product. I want to know what a claim means for the meal I will eat. In the Food Standards Agency and Ipsos survey of 611 people in Northern Ireland, conducted from 16 September to 23 November 2024, 49% said they actively used traffic-light labelling when shopping for food generally.

Common buying mistakes

  • Choosing by one claim on the front of the pack

‘Calorie counted’ and ‘high protein’ describe different features; neither tells you the meal's complete fat and salt figures.

Compare calories, total fat, saturates, salt and protein for the prepared portion before deciding which trade-off suits you.

  • Looking only at figures per 100g

A per-100g comparison does not by itself tell you the amount in the portion you plan to eat.

Check per-pack or per-serving values as well, particularly when comparing single meals of different sizes.

  • Assuming frozen meals share one microwave time

Instructions can specify an appliance wattage as well as stirring or standing steps, which affect how the meal fits your evening.

Follow the chosen pack's method. GOV.UK says frozen food should be fully defrosted before cooking unless the manufacturer instructs you to cook it from frozen.

  • Planning dinner around an unchecked listing

A meal on your shortlist may not be available for your selected shop.

Check the current listing and selected-store availability before relying on it for a weeknight dinner.

Questions about frozen ready meals

Does ‘calorie counted’ mean a frozen meal is low in salt?

No. Read the prepared-pack salt figure separately: Sainsbury's labels the 1.18g salt in its microwaved Calorie Counted Chicken Tikka Masala pack as medium.

Can I cook a ready meal straight from frozen?

Only if its manufacturer's instructions say you can. GOV.UK advises fully defrosting frozen food before cooking otherwise, and defrosting it in the fridge.

What if my microwave is a different wattage from the one in a listing?

Use the instructions for your appliance's wattage on the actual pack. Follow its stirring and standing directions too, rather than applying another product's stated time.

Do I need to check allergens on a lower-fat meal?

Yes. A fat or calorie claim does not tell you which allergens a meal contains, so read the chosen product's ingredients and allergen statement.
