Who is this for?

Pack size, nutrition figures and dietary information matter in different ways depending on what you need from a workday snack.

People packing one savoury snack

An individual bag is convenient for a lunch bag or desk drawer. Check its weight and per-pack figures as well as fat per 100g: a smaller bag is not necessarily made with less fat.

Shoppers comparing fat content

Use the per-100g total-fat figure to compare products with different pack sizes. Then check how much fat is in the portion you plan to eat.

Shoppers with dietary requirements

Check the exact flavour’s ingredients, allergen information and suitability statements. ‘Vegetarian’ does not also mean vegan, milk-free or gluten-free.

What should you check?

Start with a like-for-like nutrition comparison, then decide whether the actual pack and its dietary information work for your lunch.

PriorityWhat to checkYour needs
Total fat Compare total fat per 100g on the same basis. The NHS food-label guide describes 3g or less per 100g as low fat; a lower figure than another snack does not by itself meet that guide. I want to compare recipes fairly, even when the bags are different sizes.
Salt Check salt per 100g and per pack separately. The NHS guide describes more than 1.5g salt per 100g as high; Tesco lists Frazzles at 2.7g per 100g and 0.54g per 20g pack. A lower-fat comparison alone does not tell me how much salt is in my lunch snack.
Pack size Read the bag weight and its kcal, fat and salt figures. For example, Walkers lists Wotsits Cheese Toastie in a 12g pack, while its Monster Munch Pickled Onion figures are for a 20g pack. Will I take one individual bag, or portion some from a larger pack before work?
Dietary suitability Check the exact product’s ingredients, allergen warnings and suitability claims. Tesco lists its Free From Onion Maize Snack Rings as vegan, gluten-free and milk-free; those claims do not describe other maize snacks. If I need to avoid an ingredient, the label on the pack I eat matters more than the snack’s general style.

Common buying mistakes

  • Taking ‘baked’ to mean low fat

Tesco describes Frazzles as baked rather than fried, but lists 23g fat per 100g. The NHS low-fat guide for foods is 3g or less per 100g.

Treat the cooking description separately from the nutrition panel; compare total fat per 100g and then per pack.

  • Choosing only by calories per bag

A smaller bag can have fewer calories without having a lower fat figure per 100g. The individual bags in the Walkers Wotsits Cheese Toastie and Monster Munch Pickled Onion examples weigh 12g and 20g respectively.

Compare per-100g figures first, then check the bag you would actually pack.

  • Overlooking salt

Tesco lists Frazzles at 2.7g salt per 100g, above the NHS guide’s high-salt threshold of more than 1.5g per 100g.

Read the salt figure alongside fat, including the amount in an individual pack.

  • Assuming one dietary label covers every requirement

A vegetarian label does not establish that a snack is vegan or free from a particular allergen. Suitability can also differ between flavours and product lines.

Match your requirement to the exact pack’s ingredients, allergen warnings and stated suitability before eating it.

Brand and product-line references

These examples show why nutrition and suitability need checking by product and flavour rather than by brand name alone.

Wotsits

Walkers lists different fat figures for Wotsits Cheese Toastie and standard Wotsits Cheese.

  • Walkers lists Cheese Toastie at 18.1g fat per 100g and 2.2g per 12g pack.
  • Walkers lists standard Wotsits Cheese at 33g fat per 100g. Check the flavour rather than applying one figure to the range.

Monster Munch

Pickled Onion is an individual-pack maize snack in the Walkers range.

  • Walkers lists 5g fat per 20g pack.
  • Its listed salt figure is 1.55g per 100g, above the NHS high-salt guide.

Frazzles

Tesco describes Smiths Frazzles Bacon as a baked corn snack sold in 20g multipack bags.

  • Tesco lists 23g fat per 100g and 4.6g per 20g pack.
  • Tesco also lists 2.7g salt per 100g and 0.54g per pack; baked does not mean low in salt.

Quavers

Quavers Cheese is a potato snack included here as a familiar individual-bag comparison, not as a maize snack.

  • Tesco lists 86 kcal and 4.9g fat per 16g bag.
  • The product information lists milk, barley, soya and wheat among its allergens; check the current pack for dietary suitability.

Skips

Skips Prawn Cocktail is a tapioca snack containing maize flour, sold in 13.1g individual bags.

  • Tesco lists 71 kcal and 4.2g fat per 13.1g pack.
  • Tesco lists 32g fat per 100g, so the small pack should not be mistaken for a lower-fat recipe.

Tesco

Tesco’s own-label cheese puffs and Free From onion maize rings serve different shopping needs.

  • Tesco lists its Free From Onion Maize Snack Rings as vegan, gluten-free and milk-free.
  • Tesco lists 23.9g fat per 100g for those rings and 24.6g for its Mixed Snacks Cheese Puffs. Dietary suitability is not a reduced-fat measure.

Joybuy snack options

These options include portioned popcorn, larger bags of corn or popcorn, and individual Wotsits bags for an office lunch. Their pack formats differ, so check the exact product label when comparing fat, salt and dietary suitability.

Propercorn Lightly Sea Salted Popcorn 6 × 10g pack

Propercorn Lightly Sea Salted Popcorn 6 × 10g

The 10g individual bags make it straightforward to pack one portion. This is popcorn rather than a puffed maize snack; check the pack’s nutrition and allergen information against your requirements.

Love Corn Crunchy Snacks Sea Salt 115g bag

Love Corn Crunchy Snacks Sea Salt 115g

This 115g bag needs portioning if you want to take a measured amount to work. Check the nutrition panel for the amount you pack and the label for any dietary requirements.

Joybuy
Propercorn Lightly Sea Salted Popcorn 70g bag

Propercorn Lightly Sea Salted Popcorn 70g

The 70g bag is a different format from individual lunch packs: portion it separately if you do not intend to take the whole bag. Check its own nutrition and allergen information rather than applying figures from another Propercorn pack.

Joybuy
Walkers Wotsits Really Cheesy 12 × 16.5g multipack

Walkers Wotsits Really Cheesy 12 × 16.5g

The 16.5g individual bags suit a one-bag packed-lunch format. Really Cheesy is not the Cheese Toastie variant discussed above, so check its own fat and salt figures before choosing it for a lower-fat lunch.

Questions about choosing a snack

Does ‘baked not fried’ mean a snack is low in fat?

No. Tesco describes Frazzles as baked but lists 23g fat per 100g; the NHS food-label guide describes 3g or less per 100g as low fat. Use ‘baked’ as a cooking-method description and read the total-fat figure separately.

How do I compare snacks sold in different bag sizes?

Compare total fat per 100g first, then check the figures for the bag you intend to eat. Walkers lists 2.2g fat in a 12g Wotsits Cheese Toastie pack and 5g in a 20g Monster Munch Pickled Onion pack; the different weights matter when interpreting those per-pack figures.

Does ‘reduced fat’ mean the product is low in fat?

Not necessarily. A reduced-fat statement invites a comparison with another product or recipe; it does not replace the exact product’s nutrition panel. Check the comparison stated on the packaging and the total fat per 100g against the NHS low-fat guide of 3g or less per 100g.

Is there a vegan and gluten-free maize snack to compare?

Tesco lists its Free From Onion Maize Snack Rings as vegan and gluten-free. Tesco also lists 23.9g fat per 100g for that product, so check dietary suitability and fat content as separate criteria.

What should I do if I need to avoid an allergen?

Read the ingredients and allergen information on the physical pack before eating, including any precautionary warnings. Check the exact flavour and pack rather than assuming that a vegetarian or free-from description covers your particular requirement.
