Who is choosing?

Festival hosts comparing fat levels

If you are putting out a shareable snack, the per-100g fat figure lets you compare different pack sizes without mistaking a small serving for a low-fat product.

Festival-goers planning portions

Individual bags are straightforward to hand out. Sainsbury’s lists Propercorn Lightly Sea Salted in 10g bags, but its fat figure still needs to be assessed per 100g.

Groups choosing between flavours

When sweet, salted and sweet-and-salty popcorn are all possibilities, compare sugars and salt alongside fat. A lower fat figure does not establish what the other figures will be.

What should you check?

Start with the per-100g panel, then consider portions and pack warnings. The label-use figure below comes from 611 Food Standards Agency/Ipsos interviews in Northern Ireland, conducted from 16 September to 23 November 2024.

PriorityWhat to checkYour needs
Total fat Compare total fat per 100g across packs. The NHS defines low fat as 3g or less per 100g and high fat as more than 17.5g per 100g; check saturated fat separately. I want a lower-fat choice, not just a smaller bag. If low fat is essential, I’ll check the current label against the NHS threshold.
Nutrition labels Use any traffic-light label alongside the full per-100g panel. Check fat, saturates, sugars and salt rather than relying on one front-of-pack description. I want to compare flavours quickly without overlooking another nutrient. In the Food Standards Agency/Ipsos 2024 Northern Ireland survey, 49% of respondents said they actively used traffic-light labels when shopping for food.
Sugars and salt Read both values per 100g, particularly for sweet-and-salty flavours. The NHS marks more than 22.5g sugars or more than 1.5g salt per 100g as high. For a mixed selection of snacks, I want to know what the sweet-and-salty bag contains as well as how much fat it has.
Portions Check the bag size and the stated serving size separately. Use per-pack information to plan how much to put out, not to decide whether the product is low fat. Individual bags would be easier to hand out; for a sharing bag, I need to decide how it will be portioned.
Pack warnings Read the exact pack’s allergen statement and warnings about unpopped kernels. Check any age-related warning before serving children. Before sharing popcorn with guests, I want to check whether the chosen pack carries a warning relevant to them.

Common buying mistakes

  • Reading a small pack’s calories as a low-fat claim

Sainsbury’s lists a 10g Propercorn Lightly Sea Salted bag at 44 kcal, but the product contains 17.4g fat per 100g. The NHS low-fat threshold is 3g or less per 100g.

Compare fat per 100g when that is your buying priority; use the pack size and per-pack figure to plan portions.

  • Checking fat but overlooking sugars and salt

ASDA lists its Sweet & Salted Popcorn at 25g sugars and 2.0g salt per 100g, above the NHS high thresholds for both.

Compare fat, saturates, sugars and salt on the same per-100g basis before choosing flavours for a group.

  • Treating an online listing as the final pack label

Retailer product details can change, which matters if you are relying on a particular nutrition figure or allergen statement.

Check the current listing when ordering and read the physical pack before serving it.

  • Missing kernel and allergen warnings

The Sainsbury’s Propercorn listing warns of occasional unpopped kernels and says the product is made in a factory that handles milk. Tesco’s Metcalfe’s listing says that product is not suitable for children under four because of choking risk.

Read the warnings and allergen statement on the exact product chosen for your guests.

Brands and retailer label examples

These references show how flavour and pack format sit alongside the stated nutrition figures; they are not a guide to which products a retailer currently has in stock.

Propercorn

Sainsbury’s lists Lightly Sea Salted Popcorn as a multipack of six 10g bags for individual portions.

  • The listed product has 17.4g fat, 0.6g sugars and 1.1g salt per 100g.
  • It does not meet the NHS low-fat threshold. The listing also warns about occasional unpopped kernels and states that it is made in a factory that handles milk.

Metcalfe’s

Tesco lists Metcalfe’s Skinny Popcorn Sweet ’N Salt in an 80g bag.

  • Its Tesco nutrition panel gives 23.8g fat, 18.1g sugars and 1.3g salt per 100g for this flavour.
  • That fat figure exceeds the NHS high-fat threshold of more than 17.5g per 100g, despite the wording in the product name.

Tyrrells

Tesco lists Tyrrells Sweet & Salt Popcorn in a 23g bag.

  • The small bag offers a stated portion size for planning how many packs to serve.
  • Its Tesco panel gives 28.4g fat and 1.6g salt per 100g, both above the respective NHS high thresholds.

ASDA

ASDA lists its own-label Sweet & Salted Popcorn in a 100g sharing bag.

  • The per-100g panel gives a direct basis for comparing this sharing bag with other pack sizes.
  • It lists 21g fat, 25g sugars and 2.0g salt per 100g, each above the relevant NHS high threshold.

Tesco

Tesco’s listings provide pack and per-100g details for the Metcalfe’s and Tyrrells products discussed here.

  • The stated nutrition values make it possible to compare those two flavours on the same per-100g basis.
  • Check the current product label before relying on an online nutrition panel, as formulations can change.

Sainsbury’s

Sainsbury’s lists both per-100g and per-10g information for the Propercorn Lightly Sea Salted multipack.

  • The two measures answer different questions: per 100g for nutrition comparison and per bag for portion planning.
  • Read the current pack for ingredients and warnings, as product details may change.

Questions about festival popcorn

Does 44 kcal per bag mean popcorn is low fat?

No. Sainsbury’s lists Propercorn Lightly Sea Salted at 44 kcal per 10g bag but 17.4g fat per 100g. For a low-fat comparison, use the per-100g figure: the NHS threshold is 3g total fat or less per 100g.

What should I compare in sweet-and-salty popcorn?

Compare fat, saturates, sugars and salt per 100g, then check the portion you plan to serve. ASDA lists its Sweet & Salted Popcorn at 25g sugars and 2.0g salt per 100g; both exceed the NHS high thresholds of more than 22.5g sugars and more than 1.5g salt per 100g.

Is a vegan or gluten-free description enough for allergy planning?

No. Read the allergen statement on the exact pack. Sainsbury’s describes the Propercorn Lightly Sea Salted multipack as vegan and gluten free, but also states that it is made in a factory that handles milk.

What warnings matter when serving popcorn to children?

Check the chosen pack for unpopped-kernel and age-related warnings. Tesco’s listing for Metcalfe’s Skinny Popcorn Sweet ’N Salt explicitly says it is not suitable for children under four because of choking risk; warnings on another product should be checked separately.
