Who is choosing?

Shoppers comparing fat content

If a lower-fat snack is your priority, the fat figure per 100g lets you compare products more directly than calories per cake or front-of-pack wording.

People carrying snacks in a gym bag

Sealed individual portions may be easier to carry than an opened larger pack. Compare their nutrition per 100g separately from the amount in each portion.

Shoppers checking allergens

Read the current pack even when a rice cake looks plain. Kallo Organic Lightly Salted states that it may contain milk, sesame and soya; the listed Snack a Jacks Salt & Vinegar multipack has a different precautionary allergen statement.

What should you compare?

Start with comparable nutrition figures, then decide whether the pack format, storage instructions and ingredient information suit the way you will carry the snack.

PriorityWhat to checkYour needs
Fat content Compare fat per 100g. The Food & Allergy Information Association gives no more than 3g fat per 100g as the limit for a low-fat claim on solid food. The British Nutrition Foundation explains that “reduced fat” instead means at least 30% less fat than a comparable product. I want to compare rice cakes on the same basis, rather than assume a small portion or a lower calorie count means less fat per 100g.
Portion size Read both the per-pack and per-100g figures. Tesco Groceries lists 80kcal and 1.9g fat per 19g inner pack for Snack a Jacks Salt & Vinegar, alongside 9.9g fat per 100g. A sealed, defined portion would be useful in my bag, but I still want to know how its fat content compares with other rice cakes.
Storage Check instructions for carrying and storage after opening. Tesco Groceries and Kallo specify cool, dry storage and airtight storage after their larger packs are opened. If I open a pack before leaving home, I need a way to keep the remaining cakes protected in my bag.
Allergens Read the exact pack’s ingredients and “may contain” statement. Kallo lists possible milk, sesame and soya cross-contact for Organic Lightly Salted; Tesco Groceries lists milk, wheat, soya, mustard and other gluten-containing cereals for the Snack a Jacks Salt & Vinegar multipack. Rice as a main ingredient is not enough for me to judge whether a particular pack meets my dietary requirements.
Protein Check protein per cake or serving on the product you intend to carry. Do not treat a standard lightly salted cake and a separately labelled high-protein line as nutritionally interchangeable. If protein is part of my snack choice, I want the figure for the exact product, not an assumption based on where it is sold.

What is easy to overlook?

  • Treating “low fat”, “reduced fat” and a small pack as the same thing

“Reduced fat” compares a product with a similar one, while “low fat” has a per-100g limit for solid food. A small pack’s calorie figure cannot replace that comparison.

When fat content drives the choice, compare fat per 100g first; then use the per-cake or per-pack information to choose how much to carry.

  • Assuming ordinary rice cakes meet a protein goal

A standard lightly salted rice cake and a specifically labelled high-protein product line are different choices. A product’s name or placement among gym snacks does not establish its protein content.

Read the protein figure for the exact pack if it affects your decision.

  • Skipping the precautionary allergen statement

Statements vary between plain and flavoured products. Kallo Organic Lightly Salted and the Snack a Jacks Salt & Vinegar multipack list different possible allergens.

Check the current physical pack’s ingredients and precautionary statement each time you buy.

  • Carrying an opened pack unprotected

The storage instructions for the Kallo and Tesco rice cakes call for an airtight container after opening. A loose, opened pack offers less protection from moisture.

Carry an unopened pack or put opened cakes in a clean airtight container, following the instructions on your pack.

Questions about rice cakes

What does “reduced fat” mean on a UK rice-cake pack?

It compares the product with a similar one: the British Nutrition Foundation explains that a reduced-fat claim means at least 30% less fat than the comparable product. Read the fat figure per 100g as well to see the amount in the cake you are considering.

What does “low fat” mean for rice cakes?

For a solid food, the Food & Allergy Information Association gives no more than 3g fat per 100g as the limit for a low-fat claim. Kallo, Tesco Groceries and Marks & Spencer list 2.7g, 2.9g and 2.5g per 100g respectively for their Organic Lightly Salted, Lightly Salted and Lightly Salted rice cakes.

Does an 80kcal inner pack mean the rice cakes are lower in fat?

No: calories per pack and fat per 100g describe different things. Tesco Groceries lists 80kcal and 1.9g fat per 19g inner pack for Snack a Jacks Salt & Vinegar, but 9.9g fat per 100g. Use the per-100g figure when comparing it with plain rice cakes.

Can I assume plain rice cakes are high in protein?

No. Check protein per cake or serving on the exact pack if it is part of your choice. Marks & Spencer lists its High Protein Barbecue rice cakes as a separate line from M&S Lightly Salted, so the two products’ nutrition figures should not be treated as interchangeable.

Are lightly salted rice cakes automatically suitable if I avoid certain allergens?

No. Check the current pack’s ingredients and precautionary statement. Kallo says its Organic Lightly Salted cakes may contain milk, sesame and soya; Tesco Groceries lists possible milk, wheat, soya, mustard and other gluten-containing cereals for the Snack a Jacks Salt & Vinegar multipack.
