Who needs a coverage change?

Households with weak rooms or floors

If bedrooms or upstairs rooms have poor Wi-Fi while the connection near the router works, start with placement and coverage. Ofcom identifies router position and obstacles in the home as factors that affect the wireless signal.

Homes with Ethernet near a weak area

An existing cable run can serve a wired access point or connect mesh nodes. TP-Link says Ethernet backhaul avoids the wireless hop between its Deco units, which matters when that hop would cross a difficult part of the house.

Households using an ISP router

If you are considering replacing provider equipment, identify what connects the home to broadband first. BT describes an Openreach fibre ONT connecting to a hub by Ethernet; cable hubs, voice services and provider rules can call for a different arrangement.

What should you check before choosing?

Test the connection near the router and in the weak room, then choose a coverage method that fits both the layout and the existing broadband equipment.

PriorityWhat to checkYour needs
Find the bottleneck Compare a wired connection and Wi-Fi near the router with Wi-Fi in the weak room. Try a more central router position where practical; Ofcom identifies placement and obstacles as coverage factors. The connection works near my router but drops off in distant rooms. I want to address the in-home signal before buying more equipment.
Wireless mesh Check where the main unit connects and whether each wireless node can maintain a useful link. For TP-Link Deco, the main unit must connect by Ethernet to a modem, router or internet cable; it cannot act as a wireless repeater of the old router. Several rooms need coverage, but running cables to them is impractical. I can position mesh nodes between the router and the weak areas.
Wired coverage Check whether Ethernet can reach a remote access point or mesh node, and follow that model's wiring instructions. TP-Link says Ethernet backhaul avoids a wireless hop between Deco units. Video calls, streaming or gaming take place in a room that a cable can reach. I would rather not rely on a weak inter-node wireless link.
One small dead spot Position an extender where it still receives a usable signal from the router, not inside the dead zone. Ofcom cautions that extenders can affect data speed and responsiveness. Only one area needs a modest extension, and its use does not call for the same responsiveness as a demanding work or gaming room.
Router compatibility Identify the ISP, access type, hub or ONT, authentication requirements and any voice service. Check which device will route traffic and whether the provider equipment supports the proposed mode. I want to change the router without disrupting broadband or a voice service. Keeping the ISP hub and adding mesh may be more suitable than replacing it.
Feature retention Compare router, access-point and bridge modes on the specific system. eero says bridging its units leaves the existing router managing traffic and removes advanced eero networking features. I need to know which device will manage my network and whether changing modes affects features I use.

What can go wrong during setup?

  • Buying mesh before checking the existing connection

Extra Wi-Fi hardware addresses coverage, not a problem with the underlying broadband service. Router position may also be contributing to the weak signal.

Compare wired and Wi-Fi performance near the router with Wi-Fi in the problem room, and adjust the router position where practical before choosing hardware.

  • Putting an extender in the dead zone

An extender depends on the signal it receives. Ofcom cautions that extenders can affect speed and responsiveness.

Place it where the router signal is still usable. If several rooms need coverage or the link to that position remains weak, consider mesh or a wired access point instead.

  • Replacing an ISP router without checking the service

A replacement arrangement depends on the access equipment and provider. Virgin Media says modem mode is unavailable on Hub 5x; Vodafone says its Pro Broadband plans and plans with Digital Voice require a Vodafone router.

Before purchase, identify the ISP, access type, hub model, any ONT and voice service, then confirm the intended setup with the provider.

  • Wiring mesh nodes as though every mode works alike

TP-Link warns that incorrect multi-node wiring in router mode can create a network loop. Access-point or bridge mode can also change which device manages traffic and which features remain available.

Follow the manufacturer's topology instructions for the exact model and operating mode rather than adding direct connections to the existing router by guesswork.

Which brands offer relevant options?

TP-Link

The Deco range is relevant when a household wants mesh alongside an existing ISP router or is considering a different router arrangement.

  • TP-Link documents router and access-point modes and Ethernet backhaul for Deco.
  • According to TP-Link, the main Deco needs a physical Ethernet connection and cannot wirelessly repeat the existing router. Multi-node wiring must follow the chosen mode's topology.

eero

eero describes setups that replace a router or operate alongside one, subject to the broadband equipment and configuration.

  • eero advises bridging either its units or the existing router when both would otherwise perform router functions.
  • eero says that bridging its units leaves the existing router managing traffic and removes advanced networking features from the eero app.

ASUS

The ZenWiFi BT10 is an ASUS mesh model to examine if wired connections and network controls are important to the setup.

  • ASUS lists tri-band Wi-Fi 7, dual 10G ports, VPN and parental controls for the ZenWiFi BT10.
  • Those model specifications do not establish compatibility with a particular ISP hub, ONT or voice service; confirm the required connection before replacing provider equipment.

Common questions

What should I identify before replacing a router?

Identify the broadband access type, ISP equipment and any voice service before choosing a replacement. On an FTTP connection, look for an ONT and check how the current router connects to it; an FTTC/VDSL or cable setup has different equipment. Confirm the provider's authentication and router requirements for your particular service.

Does mesh have to replace my ISP router?

No. A mesh system with a suitable access-point or bridge arrangement can work alongside an existing router, leaving that router in charge of traffic. Check the chosen system's modes and the features each mode retains: eero, for example, says bridging its units removes advanced eero networking features.

Can mesh connect wirelessly to my old router like an extender?

Do not assume it can. TP-Link says the main Deco unit must connect physically by Ethernet to a modem, router or internet cable and cannot act as a wireless repeater of the old router. Other nodes within a suitable mesh setup can use wireless links, or Ethernet where supported and installed.

Can I use my own router with Virgin Media or Vodafone?

The answer depends on the service and equipment. Virgin Media says modem mode is not available on Hub 5x. Vodafone says its Pro Broadband plans and plans with Digital Voice require a Vodafone router; for other plans, confirm its router approval and configuration requirements before replacing the supplied device.
